How do you think this kid compares to both Pryor and Braxton?
From what I saw, he doesn't have top end speed but he accelerates fast through the line. The second he pulls the ball in, he takes off. That is absolutely amazing, great instincts! Also in regards to his running, Pryor had huge strides and early on went out of bounds alot. Braxton takes quick, elusive strides and has a great feel for the pocket. JT just seems to run North/South and isn't afraid to take on a tackle. I think he might be a better runner because of that. I would give the edge to JT.
As a passer, great tight release. Good arm and can hit a slant, something Pryor struggled with early on. I see good decision making but he may not have the read yet that Braxton has. Braxton makes great reads. I think JT is somewhere in between Pryor and Braxton.
All I know is, most of the time we get 4-5 minutes of highlights by alot of players. This guy had almost 9 mins of highlights and they all looked on point. I didn't see a so-so play in the whole thing! I definitely see what Meyer likes in this kid.
What do you guys see?

His tape looks good but we will get a great chance to see what he can do he was chosen to be in that ESPN QB Elite 11 thing that Trent Dilfer does. He and Tyrone Swoopes made it through so far. So atleast we will be able to see him throw and go through drills.
It's good to be home.
but based on what is on the tape, where do you think he ranks with Pryor and Braxton? He isn't the freakish athlete that Pryor was but I think he has better football skill. I think his running style is better than both of them but Braxton does have a better arm, IMO!
Is this kid better than michigan's kid shane morris?

I like the way he throws the ball as you said he can hit the slant also has a quick release, liked the way he throws the screen as well, short passes I would give it to JT but Braxton for the long throws. I loved the way he ran the ball there was no hesitation when he ran it was north/south he also has some lateral moves, but Braxton has more breakaway speed then JT and Pryor he can break for a touchdown on any play. I give the running edge to Braxton Pryor only ran when he had to and often ran out of out of bounds. I hope JT has the big game gene that Pryor has always seemed to step up in big games and most of all bowl games. Can't wait to see more tape on him he looks like a really good player.
It's good to be home.
Pryor is obviously bigger and has better top end speed. Braxton is very similar size wise, and a little quicker. Barrett looks like he's cut from the same cloth as Troy and Braxton..Tyrod Taylor etc. should be big time for us down the road.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I don't know if Barrett is better than Shane Morris. That is hard to quantify if you ask me. They have completely different skill sets who play in different style offenses. They both fit the systems for which they have been recruited. Barrett is an excellent dual threat QB with the ability to and the threat to both run and throw the ball, and Morris is an excellent pro-style QB, the complete opposite of Denard.
Impossible to draw accurate comparisons but fun and worthwhile nonetheless. Jt looks like an instinctually sound runner, whereas Pryor and miller both rely on speed and athleticism, which jt appears to have but his ability to get to top speeds and read the field are hat really impress me. His throwing also looks to be advanced to both miller and Pryor. Someone said something about wanting miller for long throws, jt for short ones. I disagree. Miller is going to have to earn my confidence back after a really poor year of throwing deep balls. I know that he did all that basically w no an coach, so i won't go so far as to say that he won't be Vle to change my mind. Jt's throwing motiOn nd quick release are very polished for a jr in hs
One big thing that I see is that he is already very good at running the read option
"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."
Loved what I saw in the video but that isnt what had me thinking that this kid was good to begin with. It was where I saw he was from. Witchita Falls,TX. That place is boring and dry as all hell. I was there for military training it just seemed like the only thing to do there was play football as funny as that sounds.
No offense guys, but you're breaking down highlights of a 17 (?) year old high school junior. Braxton will have 2 years under his belt by the time he gets to campus. And @Squirrel - if you say he runs right away when he pulls the ball down, didn't we ask Braxton last year to do a little less of that so that he could spot an open receiver down field when possible?
Regardless of what anyone thinks of TP as a person, his talent was much higher than the other guys. He was one of the most sought after players ever. Every program in the country salivated at the chance to get Pryor because he had talent rarely, if ever, seen.
Agree^^^^
This kid is better as a passer than both Pryor and Miller were coming out of high school. Pryor and Miller had/have big arms but their footwork was all out of whack. I think Miller will quickly catch on and if anyone can help him its Meyer. Honestly this kid eerily reminds me of Troy Smith. I think he may be great one. While Pryor and Miller had a lot of room for improvement with their throwing motion this kid has it already and he is 17.
One thing I can bet my money on.
Barrett will eventually be surounded by better playmakers and schemes than all of those as in Morris, Pryor, and Miller.
This kid is def not any better than Braxton throwing coming out of high school. That was the thing that everyone raved about with Braxton coming out of high school. "He can run the ball, and he is already way ahead with his throwing motion and mechanics." He has a cannon. He was more comfortable in high school thats why he was making the passes look easier. I think he will do the same this year! I love this highlight tape, but I still think he is def number 3 out of TP and Braxton.
One thing I like about JT is he how he fights for thos extra yards when they grab onto him. He was definitely not easy to take down and almost runs like a running back. He is going to be amazing.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
@redstorm. I was actually referring to his suddeness coming out of the zone read. When he sees an opening during the read, he doesn't hesitate to make the move. Of course this is high school and he may not have as much time to make the read in college.
I am not sure what you are talking about with Braxton and the decision making of deciding to pass the ball. I am talking a play designed to be a run and doing the zone read on whether or not to let the RB take it or he keeps it and runs. This has nothing to do with passing the ball after a fake handoff. Two totally different plays. I am certain JT has alot to learn with the play action pass and probably should read the defense before the play starts to see if he can find a matchup on the outside. But in regards to a designed run, his instinct of when to pull the ball and run North/South is very good.
I am not saying he is the overall talent Pryor is or the polished product Braxton is, but he does run with a better purpose from what I saw compared to Pryor. You all do remember Pryor would bust a run for 9 yards and then go out of bounds without being touched his freshman year. He shied away from contact alot. Braxton is much quicker but he dances a bit and doesn't run straight line like JT does. I like North/South runners. I will not be concerned about a 4th and 1 with this kid!
Im totally sold on the kid and as far as the Morris comparison, its apples and oranges but im willing to bet he shows a little more humility and won't be poppin off at the mouth like Morris.
Let's talk about the fact that we haven't had the chance to train a highly touted quarterback under a similar quarterback with more experience in a very long time. Troy Smith didn't have that opportunity, neither did Pryor or Miller. Barrett will get a chance to be behind Braxton and observe him as he grows in the system. For once we most likely won't have to thrust a qb into a system too soon, or after only having the opportunity to back up qbs whose style of play greatly differs from their own.
The sky is the limit for Barrett at Ohio State. Judging by his comments, its obvious he knows what could be in store for him under Meyer. I think another value of him commiting now is he gets a chance to watch offense develop this season and get a better grasp on what to expect instead of watching several teams. I think landing him makes it perfectly fine if they only get 1 QB in this class because IMO i think he is the absolute perfect fit.
Yeah, I think that was a bit of a problem, a good problem to have, at Florida. All those touted QBs and nobody stepped up to take over for Tebow. I wouldn't mind having a set chain of QBs who are set to take over, although I am aware that competition is best thing to have. Between Cardale and JT, I think we are okay.
Everyone seems to forget that Cam Newton was behind Tebow and then got in all that trouble.
Didn't Newton and Brantley come to Florida at the same time? I know Brantley was highly touted as a recruit and all, but he was not a good fit for Meyer's offense at all. I am not sure what they were thinking when they brought him in.
Brantley was a legacy at Fl. His uncle Scott was a linebacker there and played for the Bucs. I'm pretty sure his uncle does color commentary for eith UF or the bucs. Brantley was originally going to go to Texas, but he had a lot of pressure to stay home. I think Urbz took him, even though he didn't fit his style, because of the prominence in that area of the Brantley's.
