DEFENSE! ( sound drum) DEFENSE! ( sound drum)..........

With the verbals of Anzalone, Bosa, Neal and Sprinkle in the last few weeks I think we are gonna be loaded on the defensive side. Urban has gotten top recruits at just about every position on the defensive side. I can't even begin to imagine how the talent on the incoming D-line will dominate for years to come. Spence,Washington,Schutt,Pitman,Bosa just to mention a few aswell as some pretty talented DB's also. It should be interesting to see what this group of top talent can do in the years to come. Only one concern and that is the O-line and possibly offensive playmakers. I'd feel alot better about things if we could land Pocic and atleast one more talented OT/OG. I'm not sure  exactly how much more room we have in this recruiting class but I personally would like to see Pocic, Quick, Gibson, Lathem and Bell which would give us 18 for the class. Back-up list would include Kimbrough, Heuerman, , D. Johnson, Green. I think we are stocked at RB and I personally wouldn't take another QB or TE unless we have more spots available (and no brainers such as J. Smith or Tunsil if they want to commit) I'd love to hear some opinions about recruiting options/needs and if anyone actually nows how many spots we will have for recruits.

Heuerman is practically in. He is not a backup lister! on your list, i would like to see Pocic and Quick the most. After that, its all gravy. Can't name one position that does not have a top talent in the class.

Not sure who Tunsil is?

Tunsil is the top OT prospect by alot of sites. I think Heuerman is probably in but IMO I think Baugh was plenty. Pocic and either Gibson or Quick are pretty much MUST gets, IMO. I think we have a good shot at Bell which would be great. Who knows with J. Smith but I would make room for him.

Gotcha. Haven't seen anything on him and don't really look at ranking lists, at least not till fall ball starts. Wouldn't mind a couple OTs along with Lisle.

Offensive line is the big need right now IMO. You have a playmayer in Marshall and we haven't even seen what Reeves can bring to the table on the offensive side of the ball for this upcoming season(I think he will be used for that as well as D). TE would be set for a couple years with Baugh and Heureman (both could be deadly in this offense). Defensively, think we are pretty much set although I would like a S like Bell. I think Pocic will be a Buckeye and Tunsil does not come to Ohio State...we aren't even on his Rivals list of schools of interest.

I already posted this elsewhere, but I really hope we are holding a spot for Derrick Green. From Alex's conversations with him it sounded like Ohio State was at the top of his list and he was only holding out so he could create a few opportunities for his teammates to attend college and play football, too. I'd hate for him to miss out. He's a great player and a long-time Buckeyes fan, but I think what he's doing for his teammates shows that -- of all of his attributes -- his character might shine the brightest.

I think Urban is laying off OL because he has seen Boren,Decker,Doodson in spring ball and knows that he has 3 solid starters down the road. I still think Pocic is a MUST.

^^ key phrase, Pocic is a must. I am hoping for at least 2 more OL (Pocic included)

Dodson has not played spring ball. He has a bad wing right now and will be ready for fall. Lisle is a great recruit for this year but I do think at least 2 more OL should be added. Maybe not 2 tackles but Pocic and one other, OT, OG or center!

I love D. Green and most years would pray to get him but this is one of those situations where we just don't need another RB plus we just don't have the room in this small class. I'm not saying he is out but IMO I'd spend these last precious slots on WR and OL before RB. Great kid and heck of a RB.

Scott-

From things I've read recently, Green no longer has OSU as his leader. He put Clemson as his leader after recently visiting there. Perhaps he was not happy with Elliot committing to OSU. Then this past weekend he said he was coming to the OSU Spring Game and ended up going to the Virginia Tech game instead. It appears either the staff has cooled on him or he has cooled on them. I don't have inside info, but I am not thinking Green will end up at OSU.

Did not know that about Doodson. I know he is high on Boren and Decker and I forgot about O'Connor whom I'm counting on to be a solid OG down the road. Bobeck=Sophmore/Lindsey-Hall-Norwell-Mewhort all Juniors, Decker,Boren,O'Connor,Doodson all true freshman. Lisle=2013 and then we have Brown=FR,Underwood=Soph, St. John=Soph. We aren't as bad as we think but we can't have any injuries cause depth is not so good. I'd say Pocic is still BIG MUST but next 2 seasons are looking pretty good.

I agree 2 more OL's a must, not necessarily two tackles but at least one more tackle. I would love to land Pocic and Dorian Johnson. Khaliel Rodgers could also be a guy to look for. I know Billy Price is listed as a DT but does anyone think theres a chance he plays Guard, I know he plays both ways in high school? If the staff is looking for him to play on the o-line that could help to explain the Sprinkle commit which is still confusing to many posters on this site.

I do hope that there ends up being a spot for Green but that is looking less and less likely as time is going on. Especially considering how well Dunn is doing this offseason, with Elliot in I think RB is the least of worries right now.

Behind OL I would say WR must be a priority. Assuming that Gibson is already in I think that leaves one or two spots left and I hope we get Quick and one of Foster/Treadwell/North/Allen. With two to three true wideouts + Jalin Marshal, Baugh/ maybe Heuermen, and Elliot I think Urban will have gotten the "playmakers" he needs out of this class.

I hope the staff doesn't take another QB in this class if they do I hope its Trubisky. I think he has potential and could shoot up rankings boards after his senior season. But again, I don't really see the need here.

I have to assume with adding Bosa, and Neal today that the staff is done on the DL. Which on Defense maybe leaves room for one more LB (if Neal isn't being recruited to play that role). Smith is in if he wants in I think Kimbrough might just be a wait and see how the numbers work out in if theres room kinda situation. I also think there are some DB's that if they want in will be in as well any of the safeties (Bell, Thomas, Cravens) with Bell seemingly being the most likely of the three. Cornerback is already loaded with Burrows and Woodward but I have to think that if a guy like Alexander (speaking of anyone hear how his visit went?) or Hargrevees want in they likely could be as well if its not to late numbers wise.

Don't we need at least one Safety?

I also think that with guys leaving for the draft early and some attrition of guys who just don't get along with the staff this class will be closer to 20 than some people think.

We are going to be loaded with talent..everywhere. The big question is who will turn out to be good ones and who will be passed up for playing time/being unhappy and transferring/injuries etc. everyone cant start and play unfortunately so there will be a some unhappy campers in these loaded recruiting classes. For example 2014 d-line. How do you play all of these guys?

Bennett
Hale
Miller
Moore
Ferris
Hayes
Schutt
Pittman
Spence
Washington
Price
Bosa
Neal
Sprinkle
Carter

Probably only 8-9 guys play in rotation, some will be injured as history shows and some might be out of the program for whatever reason.

Same could be said about he future linebacking crew. 2014 projection

Shazier
Grant
Crowell
Perry
Roberts
Marcus
Williams
Perkins
Anzalone

That's alot of talented guys at a position that will most likely only have 2 on the field 3 out of 4 downs a series.

Tunsil named his top 5 today or yesterday (saw a Twitter blip at 24/7).  I believe it was all SEC schools and Oklahoma (possibly FSU).  Either way, he won't be in the B1G.

Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

Add RB to that list also. Hyde, Smith, Dunn, Ball, Elliot, Marshall. This is unfortunatly why Green is on the outside looking in-IMO

I'd still like to have this same problem with OL?

Buckeyejason's picture
Buckeyejason on 23 Apr 2012 - 2:55pm #

Marshall will be more of a receiver, probably slot who gets carries on end arounds and jet sweeps. I wouldn't really call him a RB, IMO.

^^^ I agree. Will be a utility player and will factor much more in the passing game but will take some handoffs on plays like the ones @buckeyejason mentioned. I think he will be huge in the screen game in particular little 1 step bubble screens.

Save 2004 USC, 2005 Texas, and 2010 Auburn every single championship team in the BCS era has been won largely because of a soul crushing defense that absolutely dominated the line of scrimmage.

Meyer's 06 team had two first rounds picks at defensive end (Ugh...), and his 08 team had two second round picks at end.  Combine that with talent only 5-10 teams can match on a consistent basis and an elite coaching staff and you have the recipe for success in college football.

I think you have to take Heuerman if he is willing to commit. Stoneburner is gone after this year so that leaves you with:

Jeff Heuerman (So)

Vannett (RS Fr)

and depending on which roster you look at....(each is different)

Kyle Shuck (RS FR)

Derek Burkholder (RS SO)

Blake Thomas (FR)

So by adding Baugh and Heuerman to this years class we will be set at TE for another 4 years barring injury or another unforseen circumstance.

I know everyone is saying we don't have depth at OL, But with only 1 guy so far in Lisle and a lot of the other guys going else where Urban doesn't have many guys on the radar besides pocic. I honestly think he is going to take pocic if he comes and that is it. Then he will grab 3-4 guys next year. We are at 13 right now so max 7 more guys, I would say 1 more DB, 2 more WR,Huerman at TE, 1 more OL, that would be 18 Maybe one more OL but it is a waste to pick up a guy Urban may not be as high on since he missed out on some guys to Notre Dame and Michigan, those guys stole a boat load of the OL talent in the mid west this year. Like I said before I think he gets pocic and then goes after it hard in next years class. He just needs some playmakers.
