Completely Tired!!!

I for one I'm completely tired of hearing the "Percy Harvin role" .... Lets change it to the "Teddy Ginn role" ... I'm so tired of having our recruits compared to former Gators as if we haven't had some GREAT Buckeyes .... If you ask me Teddy Ginn was Percy Harvin before Percy Harvin was Parcy Harvin ... So I vote to change it to the "Teddy Ginn" role ... Just my $0.02 ....

Well Teddy Ginn wasn't used to his full ability like Percy Harvin was in Meyer's offense.... and more kids know about Harvin then Ginn for that reason.

Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens

Ginn's frame wasn't nearly has thick as Harvin's was ... So that may have played a part in his use, along w/him being the #1 Cornerback coming out of highschool so he was learning a completely new position as well .. But I see your point of using the most recent of athlete, however I'm sure they have tape ... They can show a recruit when he is being recruited as well ...

Just a part of the coaching transition.  Hopefully, in a couple of years it'll be known as the Jalin Marshall role, or whoever it might be that makes a name for himself as a Buckeye under Urban Meyer.

Just call it the RB - WR Hybrid role. That's what it technically is.

I get what you mean by wanting it to be centered around a Buckeye but the Ted Ginn role and the Percy Harvin role were two completely different things. Ted Ginn was a go-deep kind of player and wasn't utilized in the backfield (including bubble screens and reverses) as much as Percy Harvin was, unless I just forgot about how they used Ginn.

I say...who cares? It's just a label and for anyone who saw Florida's offense under Meyer, we could only dream to have a player like Harvin

When Meyer gets his guy for that position here at OSU and that guy thrives we can call it after this name, which could me Marshall.

We had a player like Harvin, his name was Ted Ginn Jr ...

I hope it is Marshall, however the one thing both Ginn, and Harvin had in common was their BLAZING speed ... I don't see that BLAZING speed in Jalin highlights ...

It will be "the next Jalin Marshall" soon....mark that down

All I can say is take a deep breath and chill. As others have stated, we are in a transitional period with new coaches and a new system. This is Urban's offense. Ginn didn't play for Urban and didn't play in his offense. It makes perfect sense that people would toss around names of players who actually played in Urban's offense as comparisons. Its no slight against guys like Ginn who played for Tressel. Harvin and Ginn are both fast, for sure, but they are not the same type of players and they were used differently in their respective offenses. It wouldn't make any sense to show a recruit film on Ginn because Ginn didn't play in Urban's offense.

I wouldn't get so worked up about this because in due time we will have Buckeyes that players can be compared to who have played in Urban's offense, like a Jalin Marshall rather than a Percy Harvin or a Marcus Baugh rather than a Aaron Hernandez.

I say "use them both".  I agree I would rather use great Buckeyes because I still loathe the Gators regardless of the fact that we have Urban. I still dislike the "Rubbing it in" Meyer did after the loss. It was some interview after the game where he borderline mocked our perceived greatness. Either way I get urked by "The Percy Harvin" role too, but until we have the "Jailin Marshal" role we will have to deal with and I will deal with it as long as it gets us success in recruiting. If we continue to use that term after we develop some greats at that position, I will get pissed if the term sticks. This ain't Florida, this ain't Florida's coach. There have never been Florida Gator players on  a Buckeye team. (Sans Shazier-though he never played there).

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

Bucki - Ginn was NOT, I repeat NOT the same as Percy Harvin. Ginn had the same, or better, top end speed, but Harvin was far more versatile, had a better build, and could play RB as well...something Ginn could not do. I get that you want to use Buckeyes as examples but HS kids easily identify with the role Harvin played and if that helps lure recruits then so be it. But you are 100% wrong in trying to say Ginn and Harvin were the same kind of player.

IMO, Harvin's lack-luster NFL career may make the reference somewhat silly to some of these recruits.  Sure Harvin won alot of Ball games for Florida, but since then  Mark Ingram, Newton and Trent Richardson and the Honey Badger have been lighting up the SEC on the big stage.  I'm not sure if Recruits, who would have been in Jr. High at the time of Harvin at Florida, could have appreciated his specialness.

Harvin's NFL career and recent publicity are of not playing due to migraines and being a member of a losing franchise.

Call the role what it is "a special player to get the ball to from out of the backfield or out wide."

Ted Ginn may actually ring more of a bell for these recruits as he is a big play maker (I know only sometimes) on an NFL team that almost made the SuperBowl.

Ginn was a special player, so saying we are looking for the next Ted Ginn makes sense.  I think we all know that our special teams returns need improvement.

I don't agree with that at all John.. Harvin had 967 yards receiving last year on nearly 90 catches. He also rushed for 345 yards on 6.6 YPC.

The year before that he had 860 receiving yards. The year before that he had 790.

Last year he played all 16 games. The year before that he played 14, and 15 the year before. He has injury concerns but he's been out on the field and he's been productive.

And then to say that Percy Harvin has been a disappointment in the next level in a thread comparing him to Ted Ginn Jr. is absolutely crazy. Ted Ginn was a top ten pick and I'm sorry to say this as a huge Buckeye fan, but he has been a complete and total bust.

Okay, I stand corrected on Harvin's NFL career.  It isn't lackluster.  Too lazy to look him up on google before I typed.  However, Refrencing him to a positsition tires me as well.  I look forward to these guys coming in and trying to be the best Buckeye they can be.

you all have it wrong! Chris Gamble was Ginn/Harvin before they were! And to be honest he has had the best NFL career at CB!

tennbuckeye19's picture

Guys come on. As I said above, the reason guys are being compared to Percy Harvin, Aaron Hernandez and other Florida players is because they played for Urban in Urban's offense. Its that simple. Its nothing against guys who played at OSU like Ginn. OSU conistently puts guys in the NFL which is a major plus on the recruiting trail. BUT if a top offensive player is being recruited by Meyer, they wanna know how they will be used in his offense. Ginn never played in Urban's offense. Percy Harvin did. Thats all there is to it.

To be honest, despite being a great Buckeye, Teddy Ginn was under-utilized in my opinion.  Could you imagine how great that team would of been offensively with a coach like Meyer.  There were many weapons on that offense that weren't used to the best of their abilities.

tennbuckeye19's picture
tennbuckeye19 on 29 Apr 2012 - 10:54pm #

BTALbert - I agree. Many players were under-used or misused in the past. I loved Tress, but I think he missed out on the opportunity to really use several of his playmakers, Ginn included. I loved Tress and the results speak for themselves, but, his offense was too conservative, boring, and unimaginative if you ask me. For all it was, it could've been so much more.

It would seem simple on the face of it. Meyer coached Harvin, he didn't coach Ginn.

Alex, is Marshall your favorite recruit? It seems like you speak the highest of him. I think he's an amazing talent, but you seem to think he's a top 10 recruit (even though the recruiting sites have him lower). Do you think he will move up in the rankings?

Personally, I hate the "California Roll"......where is the "Columbus Roll"?

This is just silly chatter that will be a nonissue, if Meyer is successful here.
