He was specifically drafted to be the starter
Apparently the Packers are interested most, per many league guys.
I think they should send him back down to Texas. Clearly not a cold weather guy. Hes pretty fail and has baby hands.
- Respect the Rivalry -
I have no fanship ties to the pros (fantasy football only), but McCoy wasn't bad this year. He was on a bad team.
I watched every Browns game and respectfully disagree with you RecruitBuck. Before I get into it, I was against the Weeden pick. I wanted to get RB, WR, and OL with our top three picks and give McCoy one more year to see what he can do (and if he still sucks we go all in for Matt Barkley).
That being said, Colt McCoy was completely ineffective last season. He is scared against the blitz (so teams blitzed at an astounding rate), he can't throw downfield, he doesn't anticipate throws, he is inaccurate even in the short-passing game (was supposed to be his strength), and he simply couldn't move the ball. He was able to put together some late-fourth-quarter drives but for the first 3 and a half quarters he was Mr. Irrelevant. Part of the blame goes to the coaching staff and the offensive playcalling, but to me McCoy shoulders a large portion of the blame for the Browns scoring a measly 13.6 or so points per game.
McCoy supporters cannot point to anything in his game to justify their support. They either say that he won in college or that he's tough. Both true, but it takes more than that to lead your team to the Super Bowl.
@recuritbuck You're right he was on a bad team, but Colt was also part of the problem. The guy played scared and it shows. Did nothing to elevate the players around him, at best he is a game manager. It wasn't an accident he was available in the third round in '09. The Browns probably overdrafted him that year. I won't miss the guy at all.
Edit- DMCDOUGAL24 nailed my point more thoroughly
Weedens numbers vs pressure were the worst in the country. Not sure how you think that screams upgrade to me. Big arm no question, but he's a reach at 22. He would od been on the board at 37 and probably further.
@SilverBullet33 Not really a big deal that he was taken at 22 instead of 37. Many of the OTs and WRs the Browns had been linked at 22 will be there at 37. If they get a guy like Stephen Hill or Cordy Glenn at 37 I'm fine with Weedon at 22. Order doesn't really matter as long as they get a quality WR or OT at 37.
Not a Browns fan but thought Colt deserved a shot this year. He had no training camp last year, a new coaching staff, and no weapons around him. If nothing improves then give up next years draft for Barkley.
Like I said, I saw a guy who had no one to throw to, no real option running the ball, and questionable offensive playcalling at best. He was never in a good situation to throw the ball. Give him a better team (even a team like the Jags) and he's much better.
I blame the Browns ineffective offense on (the lack of) skill positions, playcalling, and the leaky at times OL. Not McCoy.
I have no fanhood, that's just my observation
I agree Weeden was a reach at 22, but his arm alone makes him an upgrade because he will be able to stretch the field. The west coast offense utilized in 1990 and run by Colt McCoy does not work any more. You have to be able to stretch the field and throw the ball downfield in order for the short passing game to be effective.
I would have been fine with giving McCoy another shot this year- in fact I would have preferred it over Weeden.. but it isn't because I like Colt McCoy
Worst crop of receivers to work with. Doesn't matter who the QB is.
Same river of crap and us Browns fan are swimming in it. I don't like the Weeden pick. And I am torn on McCoy.
I wasn't sold on him as a starting QB in the NFL when they drafted him, but I feel like he has not gotten a fair shake at trying to be a starter. In his 1st year under Mangini the offense was a piece of crap with Peyton Hillis being the only bright spot. Then Mangini gets fired and they bring in Shurmur to run the West Coast, but in order to run the West Coast you have to have receivers who can separate and make plays. Look at the Browns roster, do you see anyone on the roster who an opposing defense looks at and is nervous about facing? And don't say Josh Cribbs, he's not a true receiver. I feel like Colt was playing QB last year with one hand tied behind his back because the Browns gave him NOTHING to work with.
And what do they think they are gonna be able to get for an unproven QB? Cleveland needs playmakers. Why does it seem like Mike Holmgren is not exactly the genius everybody thinks he is?
I'm a fan and have watched every single pro throw of Colt McCoy. He has a noodle arm and is built like a high school QB. The poor talent and poor coaching excuse only go so far. He has shown no signs of being anything more than a game manager. At no point in the last two years did it ever feel like the Browns had a reliable starting QB on the roster. The fact that no other teams are looking to trade for him to compete as a starter and are looking at him as a backup QB option for nothing more than a late round pick is very telling.
I wasn't in favor of the Weedon pick, but I think it can work if the Browns draft well from here on out. Look at the players that are still on the board that were potential first round picks: Jonathan Martin, Cordy Glenn, Stephen Hill, Mike Adams, Reuben Randle, and Alshon Jeffrey. And there are three other players that I think have first round talent and fit needs in Mohammed Sanu, Bobbie Massie, and Lavonte David.
I think the Browns could even take a player with the 37 pick and move back into the second round by packaging some of their later picks (and maybe McCoy). If the Browns could get one of Hill/Randle/Jeffrey/Sanu (I actually Sanu would be the best fit) and one of Martin/Glenn/Massie I think we could lable this draft a success. It's possible that one of these guys might still be there with the Brown's third round pick (I'm looking at you Mike Adams).

McCoy did play scared last year behind Cleveland's O-line. Any non-dual threat QB would have done the same.
Remember how non-dual threat Todd Beckman went from a celebrated OSU QB his junior year (behind a stout O-line) to a benchwarmer his senior year (behind a the worst O-line of Tressel's tenure)? He didn't just start sucking all of a sudden.
Put McCoy behind a stout O-line and I guarantee he will pick you apart. He is the most accurate college QB I have ever witnessed. He wouldn't have been successful in college without a strong O-line, and he won't be successful in pros without the same.
If that's the case then why aren't teams clamoring to bring him in as a starter now that he is on the trading block?
That's the thing about McCoy that makes him not the answer in Cleveland - everything around him has to be perfect. He needs a great O-line. He needs great receivers. He needs a good running back. The Browns won't have that for YEARS.
So, if he goes to the Packers and somehow sees the field, he very well could do well and all the Browns fans will cry about letting another one go, but it's an illusion. He's not the guy here.
Colt McCoy is more of a game manager QB than one that is going to pick you apart. Yes he was awesome in college only because he had studs all around him. Not that he does not he is being exposed for what he really is. Cleveland needs to get a run game going so they dont have to rely on McCoy's arm as much.
"if irony were made of strawberries, we' d all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now."
I think if you give Colt 2 good WR's and an O-line and we could finally see what he has to offer. Until that this really bad offense would suck under Weeden, Colt or even Peyton Manning. I watched most of the Browns games last season and I thought that he has potential given the proper tools. Remember the Browns had the worst WR 's in the league and where at the bottom of the barrel in all offensive categories. In all fairness I don't think Colt could be fairly judged in that offense with zero tools.
Colt McCoy is not an starting NFL QB. Which sucks, b/c I really like the guy, and love to root for him, especially compared to some of the qb's in the league. (Rivers, Cutler, and Rapistburger come to mind). To put it in perspective, Brady Quinn has similar career numbers (I'll admit with probably a more talented supporting cast) and Tim Couch was way better (with a significantly worse team around him.) I don't think we should've drafted Weeden, (I don't think Aaron Rodgers could succeed w/ Cleveland's offense around him, so how is a 28 yr old rookie going to) but Colt McCoy is not the answer.
He could not throw downfield to save his life. Nice guy but will never be a "Drew Brees". Bon voyage and good luck.
Doesnt matter who the QB is , they just have to teach him how to throw the ball to a receiver that isnt open and do it while running from 3 or 4 deffenders comming at him virtualy unblocked. If they get a QB like that then ill be happy otherwise they need to fix the rest of the offense first.
O H I O is the Buckeye State
Or just a guys that has pocket presence, is decisive and unafraid to throw into the tight windows that every other QB in the league has to throw into.
Browns led the league with 33 drops - guess that was his fault too
This was and is a bad team. These picks will not increase the win total
Drops weren't his fault, but even if you cut the drops in half the team isn't much better and probably doesn't win any more games.
As a lifelong Browns fan I feel like I should just bite the bullet and get a leather maker to fashion a permanent paperbag to wear to games.
The Browns. Wow. I've been a fan for a long time. They better get Vontez Burfict or a WR in the 3rd round or they will have another double digit loss season in 2012.
So Vontez and another WR will save the browns season? Get real. That franchise is cursed!

Just my thoughts on players they need to improve. Been a football fan for a long time. Been trying to figure out the Browns' pathetheticness since they returned in 1999. All I have is hope.
I hope them the best every year as well. Just never seems to get any better though unfortunately.

So the Browns felt they didn't need the pick at 67 and traded down to the mid 80's. Nice sense of urgency. Hey fans, we want a couple more picks in the 6th round (for players that are really no good) so we'll let teams pick over the next 15 players before we go again!!!! I hate it. Posey would have been ok in Brown. But hell no....
@DMCDOUGAL- Man I fell like your speaking for me. I've been trying to articulate these same sentiments to my fellow Browns fans but i get so frustrated and angry with their aruguments i just get incensed.
They would pick vontez because I bet he will go undrafted.
I do feel bad for Colt. I think he'll eventually be a solid starter down the road. Just wasn't the right time and place in Cleveland for a number of reasons.
Care to make a friendly wager on that one? lol
I am a Cleveland Browns fan and have been for my whole life (31 years) . I remember the good old days of Browns football in the 1980's with Bernie Kosar, Webster Slaughter, Ozzie Newsome, Kevin Mack, Ernest Byner, Clay Matthews, etc. I remember watching them on TV when they used to actually win games and going to playoff games in the old stadium. Fast forward to 1995 when Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore to become the Ravens. The three seasons 96, 97, & 98 were hard for me because my team didn't even exist. Then came 1999 and the "new" Browns returned to Cleveland.
Since 1999 the "new" Browns have been awful. They've had only 2 winning seasons, and made the playoffs just once. With the claim that Brandon Weeden was drafted to be their starting QB, that will mean since Tim Couch was drafted #1 overall in the 1999 draft, 17 quarterbacks will have started a game for the Browns since returning to the league. The Browns have had 5 head coaches since 1999 (6 if you include the interim coach named after Buctch Davis resigned). Plain and simple, the 'new' Browns have been nothing more than a river of crap that all fans have been swimming in since their return to Cleveland. Being a Browns fan, especially now, is not easy. Browns fans are starving for something, anything, to be remotely excited about. As I tell all my friends, being a Browns fans keeps me humble.
I don't believe in curses, but heck, maybe the Browns are cursed. The organization is a graveyard for coaches, for quarterbacks, and for fans. And I've said all of this just to say that Colt McCoy was doomed from the start by coming to Cleveland. I wish him well and hope that he finds some level of success wherever he lands.
Starting to sound like he may actually stay in Cleveland - but you basically can't believe anything that you hear from the front office these days.
Not sure if it was said here, but apparently Colt was told on Thursday that the Browns would not be drafting a quarterback in the first round.
Hey everyone! This is my first post........Good to be with my Buckeye Bretheren....as far as McCoy being told the Browns weren't going to take a qb, I'd like to know exactly when they supposedly told him this because in my mind making a play for RG III would have indicated that they were in fact going to take a qb in this draft or at the very least make a trade for one. It, at least to me makes Colt not look so smart................just an observation....I have more things to say about this subject when i have more time to type
A University of Michigan fan walks into a dr's office and takes off his hat revealing a frog sitting on his head, The doctor asks "how can I help you?" The frog replies "I've come here to get this wart removed from my butt"<
I'm ok with them moving on past McCoy, but drafting a 28 year old QB with a 1st round pick makes no sense. If you're a good team and you need a "tweener" QB to get you througha few years...OK. But the Browns have way to many needs to waste a first rounder on a guy who can't play for at least 10 years. I couldn't believe they passed on DeCastro. That guy starts for the Steelers for 12 years. He's a monster, and relentless. Hard to find guys like him, and we let him go to our rival where he'll kick our asses for years after Weeden is retired.
Take DeCastro, and go for Barkley or Landry Jones next year.
Winning in the NFL starts at the top. Theres a reason the Steelers, Ravens, Patriots, and Packers are contenders each year. If you don't have a great front office.... you will always be average.
Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.
