'12 LB Joe Burger is a Buckeye!

Rivals
247

Coming on as a preferred walk-on.
Fickell was trying to persuade him to join for awhile now and Burger finally made the decision today to join the Bucks.

Kid must really dream to be a buckeye to be a walk-on to OSU over a free ride to Miami, glad to have him aboard.

Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens

And unless he is one of those HIGHLY underrated players who goes from below average to star, I dont think we'll hear much about him past this thread...So I wouldn't worry about LB numbers or scholarships

It works.  We are thin on guys and need some special teams LBs and Scout team lbs pretty badly I imagine.

Sure tackler. Shoots the gap and sheds blockers with ease. Almost every tackle was an instant stop or he knocked the ball carrier down on the spot or backwards. Very solid. Lacks top end speed. Seems like a pretty good choice to play middle LB if Klein and Grant don't work out.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

It's nice that we got this kid as a WALK-ON, but lets not get out of hand here and peg him as a possible starter this year.

I would think Camren Williams would start over Burger if Grant or Klein don't work out. I really don't think Klein will be starting this year anyways. It will be either Grant or Williams. This is now Urbans team and he has no ties to Klein.

bassplayer7770's picture
bassplayer7770 on 2 Apr 2012 - 11:52am #

Coach Meyer has said Grant has to be a player this year, so that does seem to imply Klein isn't in serious consideration, but Fickell seemed to think Klein would compete with Grant for the starting position.  Unfortunately, I think Cam Williams will have to take the starting position from those guys since he won't be here until Summer.

Also, some interesting background on Burger here...

Need another player named Fries. Then when OSU plays UM, Hoke wouldn't be able to concentrate everytime a play happens by Burger and Fries!

UM needs a defensive tackle named Gordita!

Wow. Talk about a scholar/athlete! What academics! 3.9, admitted to ND, Princeton AND Harvard. I hope he has a great four years as a Buckeye.

This is probably the most talented walk-on we've had in a while (can't think of one that had that many FBS offers and a highlight tape that looked like that off the top of my head)... depth at a position of need and no schollie used... score one for UFM

He's probably getting tossed a substantial academic scholarship with his current grades and test scores, so it's a win for everyone here.

Rampage, you make a really good point regarding scholarships for his grades, and he pays in-state tuition.  It will be interesting to see if Joe is able to make it on the field.

Unless he applied for special scholarships, sadly, his grades don't decide how much of a scholarship he gets. However, I assume he also has a high ACT score, which is how the academic scholarships are given out. Still though, none of them are worth a very large amount of money.

Lane swerve- He had to have had pretty damn strong SAT/ACT scores to get into Harvard or Princeton. 3.9 GPA  is very, very good, but it is not terribly unusual these days, especially if the high school has AP courses that are weighted. It really is the SAT/ACT and GPA combination that gives a student the best shot at getting academic scholarships that are merit based. Who knows, he might have a larger tuition bill at OSU than he would have had at Harvard, given Hahhvahhd's endowment and relatively new tuition algorithms based on family income. OK, back to the business at hand.

Triv's picture
Triv on 2 Apr 2012 - 2:52pm #

Not much of a chance he got large academic scholarship. I'll be a freshman at OSU next year and the max merit scholarship you can get is 3,500 a year, and special scholarship info hasn't come out yet.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

William's picture
William on 2 Apr 2012 - 3:02pm #

Have to agree on the academic scholarship issue. He won't be receiving that much in scholarships unless he killed the ACT/SAT. I got a 30 and received two scholarships, one worth $4,800 (over 4 years) and the other worth around $32,000 (over 4 years), although the $32,000 scholly applied to out of state students only and I was able to weasel my way into receiving in state tuition. So in all reality academics won't pay for as much as people really think they do.

Note: I do not mean to make this post seem like I am bragging, definitely am not.

bassplayer7770's picture
bassplayer7770 on 2 Apr 2012 - 3:20pm #

I wasn't trying to imply academic scholarships would have him completely covered, but it will certainly take a chunk out of what he owes for school.  Plus, if he performs well academically at tOSU, couldn't he earn more scholarships?  I have to admit, I graduated from tOSU in December 2000, so I'm not up-to-date on current tuition, etc.

Irricoir's picture
Irricoir on 2 Apr 2012 - 3:38pm #

Yeah I wasn't trying to push the hype wagon on him. I hate when folks project recruits as starters before taking their first practice. I guess what I meant to say was that he does not count as a scholarship player and he fits a position of need, so if the scholarship Linebackers don't pan out or get a string of injuries then its nice to get someone to fill that role at no "cost".

He's a walk on and appears to be very talented and for his position I would  say that he appears more talented than other scholarship recipients at different positions. Thats just a personal opinion based off of a hilight reel, not personal observations.

@SOUTHBY not necessarily, if he would've been on football scholarships at Ivy League schools, his numbers wouldn't have to be up to par with the typical Harvard student in terms of ACT. I got the second highest merit scholarship at OSU, which is 2400 a year, and i assure you, it leaves a huge chunk of tuition yet to be paid.

@BUCK-I.8: I know kids who are on/have been on Ivy sports teams-they don't/didn't get much of a break on SAT/ACT scores or GPAs, even football players. Their SAT scores were still extremely high, but they had the sports hook and an Ivy sports coach advocating to get them in. Otherwise they would have been like every other high achieving senior in high school hoping to get into an Ivy League school that did not have family/alumni hooks. As Ivy League schools do not give athletic scholarships, they do, however, have other means to give out scholarships- endowed, financial, and merit. These scholaships could reduce the actual tuition to less than in state tuition at OSU, as I stated before. And believe me, I absolutely understand scholarships at OSU-my OSU kid has a merit scholarship, and it still pains me to write the tuition check each quarter. Especially since I know how much my parents paid when I went to OSU.

buck-I.8's picture
buck-I.8 on 2 Apr 2012 - 7:06pm #

Yes, ivy League schools do hold higher standards for their football players than other schools, but as I was told by a current Yale football player from my high school, his numbers only had to be a 3.5 with a 27 ACT. Respectable, yes, but not enough for very much merit at Ohio State.

On the issue of scholarships, no, the Ivy League schools cannot give scholarships directly for athletics, but you can be damn sure that they'll make it as affordable for their athletic targets as possible. The point is, football players get into Ivy League schools with numbers that non-athletes wouldn't even be considered with.

The only points I was making were A. athletes don't have to have as impressive numbers as non-athletes to play at high calibur schools, and B. That no merit scholarships at Ohio State make it affordable by any means.

I've said it a few times already on this board but the number one thing Urban seems to look for in his players is their competitiveness.  He's made it clear that if you have talent, skills, speed, etc., but not the heart and competitive drive then you're nothing to him.  Sounds like this kid has succeeded in everything he does because he puts in the effort and wants it more than the next guy.  Who knows if it'll ultimately pan out like it did with his dad at ND, but I would not be shocked to see Urban take a liking to this kid.

I know the Burger family well. Joe is a great kid. He will get some academic money. What's more is that he comes from a HUGE Notre Dame family. Both his dad and brother played at ND. What's more is that the Burgers seem to be late bloomers. Bobby got much stronger in faster between the beginning of his senior HS year and the end of his freshman year in college, so much so that he was able to transfer from Dayton to ND and walk-on at a position he had played hardly at all in high school (tight end). Worked his way up to #2 on the depth chart I believe, and got some good playing time on special teams. Beyond this though, the Burgers are a wonderful family that raise their kids right, and Joe is a natural leader. Even if he doesn't become a starter, his presence on the team is a net positive. He has serious work ethic.

For a preferred walk on, the kids got a nice read step and great speed for a Mike LB.  Can't believe he passed up a scholarship somewhere else just to walk on at OSU but find it very admirable.  I have a feeling he'll be earning a scholarship soon.
