Your Spring Practice starters at OL and LB

LT - Mewhort

LG - Norwell/Linsley

C - Linsley/Bobek

RG - Marcus Hall

RT - Reid Fragel

Appears that Linsley has the inside track on Center.  Not the lineup I would have guessed.  Hall better have improved a lot because the one game he played a lot at RG last season was against MSU and it was a disaster.  Crazy that Fragel can move to RT from TE and be starting so quickly.  Speaks to the lack of depth at OL.

Starting LB's - Sabino, Grant, Shazier

Surprised at this. Though that Linsley would be a guard and that Bobek would be starting at center.

They both worked at Center from what I was able to gather just Linsley took more reps.  Linsley was Brewster's back up in '10 and is more experienced overall.  When Bobek was at Center Linsley would move to LG.  Norwell only worked at LG and then subbed out when Bobek and Linsley were in.  Of course, it's just day 1

I would prefer to have these 5 starting based on what I have seen of Marcus Hall in the past.  Mewhort, Linsley, Bobek, Norwell and Fragel, but what do I know?

I remember when Mewhort was recruited and guard/center was being tossed around.... never tackle.

Did anyone expect anything else for Line backers? I see Perkins and Marcus getting serious playing time when they come in though.

Interesting OL. Norwell moving to Guard is the shocker. I hope Marcus Hall has improved.

It's obvious - he's taken the two most athletic players - an ex tight-end and Mewhort, who's just awesome, and made them tackles. So, when we run a pitch, we get the tackle out to block before the defender gets there. And you know Urban has said he likes to pull tackles. Who's going to pull faster - Fragel or Hall?

Urban mentioned freshman Boren being a tough son of a gun or something to that effect. He could work his way into the second unit possibly by the end of spring.?

Yeah, I saw Coach Meyer called Jacoby Boren a "tough nut."  It sounds like he made some impressions on the first day as did Taylor Decker.

So who is in the 2nd tier on the linebackers? If Grant, Shazier, and Sabino are 1,2,3 (not in that order, but you know what I mean), that must put Klein, Roberts, and the others all battling for #2 at the three LB spots...

Hope the incoming freshmen LBs will push Sabino to play up to his potential. Either way I expect to see Perkins in the mix right away.

Miller, here's some info for you.

SLB - Etienne Sabino / Luke Roberts
MLB - Curtis Grant / Storm Klein / Conner Crowell

Grant as your MLB huh? Love the athleticism and if he can make the reads a Mike needs to make, he can be a real terror.

Then again, anything is an upgrade from the Hail Storm.

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

Thanks, Bassplayer. Sabino better get it in gear, or Roberts will have his spot. Whether Luke can hold it or not, who knows, but he's in phenomenal condition and is a really good football player -- very much like Sabino was touted when HE came in. Unfortunately for Etienne, once he hit the starting lineup, he didn't live up to the hype, despite the promise he showed on special teams earlier...

Shazier is going to be even more scary, I think. Can't wait to see how he has developed in the off-season. Hopefully Grant will make his presence felt in the same way this season as Shazier did last season. I'm not used to the LB corps being down... it makes me sad. :(

I can see Josh Perry playing MLB. I also don't think we are going to be down at LB this year. It is going to be fun to see these guys flying around since the D line will be much improved. Kick ass Bucks.

Perry is too tall and lanky to be a MLB IMO. That position is usually for guys who are bulkier and compact..with a lot of hitting power. Def an outside guy to me.

At the press conference Urban stated Fragel gained 20 lbs to put him up to 300lbs and is under 10% body fat #beast

I didn't know Roberts was that good to be honest, he came in as a 3 star and Urban was really high on Marcus, Roberts is from the next town over from me so I wish him the best and maybe follow in Bobby Carpenters foot steps. But I didn't know he was that good! Also I think Storm Klein is bad, I hope he isn't even in the 2 deep, one of the freshmen has to be better then him.

That was a really good article bassplayer, that is interesting that kenny hayes put on 40 pounds and is up to 280lbs, maybe that is why DT isn't a big concern, with joel hale, bennet all young, I really think the Defense is going to be really good this year, or at least I hope, maybe that way it can help the Offense win a few games it didn't last year.

Storm Klein was such a Licking County legend,,,why hasnt he been more impactful at OSU? Is it low football IQ, or being undersized for the position?

@wittenberg

Im no expert but he has always looked kind of out of shape/fat (for a LB) and has looked pretty slow too

bassplayer7770 on 30 Mar 2012 - 9:19am #

I agree with Blazer.  Storm still looks a bit "fat", and he looked slow last season.  I don't see any way he gets PT for Coach Meyer, but I guess he could surprise us...

Come on guys, he is not fat he is big boned!

Adamant73's picture
Adamant73 on 31 Mar 2012 - 11:05am #

Storm Klein's problem was that he isn't very fast and he just isn't good enough to be impactful. He is a nice player and he makes a good back-up/special teams but he just hasn't lived up to his potential. Fat? I doubt that is his problem.

No matter who our starting o-linemen pan out to be, rest assured they appear to be make tremendous strides as a unit. Anytime a new staff/system is brought in it is my opinion it seems to close the gap a bit from top to bottom. As a former o-line coach myself, the installation of new offensive calls and philosophy can initially be confusing for freshmen and seniors alike. Through repetition it always seems the unit will always progress as a whole, and finally some reach a plateau of sorts(typically frosh, or those new to a specific position) eventually the smarter, more fundamentally sound players rise to the top and lead. It will be interesting to see if there are any surprises as to who ends up towards the top of the depth charts after spring ball. No matter who takes up the battle this year on the offensive front, it will be refreshing to see smart and aggressive coaching being reflected on the field!
