"I think it's humorous that the academic institution can give an academic scholarship and take it away when a student doesn't perform at a certain GPA-level, but it's absolutely the worst thing you can do as a coach."
-Derek Dooley
I have a tendency to agree with this.
@OHIOKLAHOMA, I can see where you are coming from on this, however, I just think athletically you never really know how the transition will be from the high school ranks to the college ranks. So if you are betting on a kids raw talent in athletics and he doesn't perform and you yank his scholarship, I have a hard time comparing that to a kids academics. Academics I just feel you have more control over it, you don't get injured, or put your body through the rigors of practice etc...should he really be punished if he's hurt and that effects his speed and his ability to compete in the long run?...this is all IMO of course.
I think it's humorous a coach can cut a kid at anytime without any ramifications, but if a kid decides he no longer wishes to be at a school he has to sit out a year.
I like to believe that my best hits border on felonious assault.

while i agree with you both. There are some changes to the academic side of things. in HS homework is weighted pretty heavy towards your grade in classes, where as college it may only be 1 midterm and 1 final that determine your grade. you dont have parents around making sure you're doing your work. a lot of kids will have tempation around them they arnt used to having.
@buckman
Not only does he have to sit out a year, the former school has to approve of the school he wants to transfer to, I believe.
Academic scholarships require certain GPA to maintain the scholarship. Athletic scholarships require certain GPA to maintain the scholarship. See Duron Carter. This isn't the NFL. The school isn't going to continue to pay a scholarship for a kid who flunks out. What the multi-year scholly does is make coaches recruit more carefully and it keeps them from cutting players to make room for others who might be more talented.
vacuuming sucks
Those are 2 completely different situations. An academic scholarship is judged objectively with a score. An athletic scholarship is completely subjective. It's the opinion of a person.
