Curious case of Heinz Ward?

I am curious to see what everyone thinks about Heinz Ward as a possible NFL Hall of Fame canidate. I have been hearing alot of people, mostly Steelers fans who think he is a lock for Canton, Ohio. I personally don't see it. He was a good player and at his peak he was top 5-10 at his postion, but I would never say that Ward was the best at his position in any year. I see it as he will go down as a great Steeler player who was a team leader on a team that had a pretty good run. Chris Carter didn't even get in this year, I'd say Ward won't be getting that call from Canton.

Lock. I'm saying this as a Browns fan. 14 years with one organization, 1000 catches, 2 superbowls, 1 superbowl mvp and over 10,000 yards receiving. Not to mention maybe the best blocking receiver ever. And believe me it pains me to type this.

Bengals fan, and I gotta agree.  Not sure if I'd call him a lock, but he'll probably make it.  Wouldn't say that he stands on the pedistal where Chris Carter does, but he also doesn't have the personality issues Carter did.

He was never the best at his position though. Don't get me wrong he is a great player but the HOF is for the best of the best. Look at the list of WR that are not in and I think that he is on the outside.

@Adam I'd mostly agree, but guys get in because of their lifetime body of work too.  I think his overall resume will land him in the HOF one day.  Especially, in the NFL.  Their hall of fame is kind of a joke in my opinion.  Don't they have a minimum requirement for inductees every year.  Like they have to have 5 or 6 guys inducted each year?  Whether there are guys deserving or not?  Ward could end up in one of those weak years where there aren't many guys eligible who are that deserving.

Was just reading the article on ESPN.com, Ward has steeler franchise records for catches 1000, yards 12000+ and td's 85. Hate they guy but having those records from a team with their success and players they've had is pretty impressive. Glad I don't have to see the grin he always has 2 games a year anymore though.

Is he retired or looking around? Maybe the Browns can scoop him up on the cheap.....

Pleasantly shocked by Ward's numbers. I find it a sham that Michael Irvin is in the hall while Cris Carter is not and Ward's numbers are closer to Carter's than they are Irvin's. Ward is in by any metric. Great receiving stats, great blocker, two rings. He's got it all. He's in. First ballot, IMHO.

Some rumblings about ESPN's headline for the Hines Ward story today.  He is a Korean native and his mother is Korean and the headline today on the WWL was.........No Happy Endings.

He is a HOF player in my estimation.

I'm a Steelers have and have always loved the way Hines Ward played and I think he'll be in the Hall of Fame, but I think Cris Carter is more deserving. Not just because I'm a die-hard Buckeye --- but every time I hear the name Cris Carter (in regards to football), I think of maybe the top 2 or 3 guys in NFL history with the best hands. And, of course, all he did was catch touchdown passes.

p.s. If the Steelers are gonna lose Mike Wallace, I'd like to see them work out a trade for that # 2 pick to the Rams, (who desperately need a WR), and the Steelers could get an OT or CB.

I despise the Steelers, but I think he gets in eventually to the HOF.  WR's typically end up waiting to get in, look at CC now.  Adam I agree he may never have been the best pass catcher in the NFL during his career, but there is value in the other things Hines brought to the table, namely leadership, and he was the best blocking WR in the history of the NFL IMO.  I don't think you have the be the best at your position to get in, or else no WR's who played during Rice's career would ever get in.

BUCKS43201, I think you are WAY overestimating Wallace's value.  NO WAY is he worth the #2 pick in the draft.  But I would watch out for the teams at the end of the first round, like NE (who have 2 picks at the end of the 1st), SF, Baltimore.  I could see any of the three giving up their 1st rd pick to sign Wallace to an offer sheet.  They could all use a field stretching WR and Wallace hasn't even reached his prime yet.

yeah - James, he is not worth the #2 overall pick alone, but maybe another compensated draft pick (i.e. a 2nd or 3rd rounder in this or next year's draft) ... I should have written that. But, I think that is definitely fair: a proven WR, mabye top 3 fastest in the league + a first day draft pick for the # 2 --- I really think if you're St. Louis you would prefer a proven guy who can play right away like Wallace instead of Blackmon, Blackmon may be more of a product of a system offense...not saying he is -- but he could be.

You're right - NE has picks to trade and they always make draft day moves like that.

I think Ward will get into the HOF, but not a first ballot.  He was a very solid possession receiver, and occasional pro bowler.  What I think gets him in is those 2 rings. I think Chris Carter will get in before Ward

It's Hines* and he's a lock. However, he's still a tier below CC, who I can't believe isn't in yet (even a wolverine has to admit that).

Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!

@Hail - I'm giving Adament the benefit of the doubt.  He was being clever since Hines plays at Heinz.
