This is something I've been wondering since the bowl ban was put down on the team. Is there going to be a difference in how Meyer coaches with there being no chance of a Big X or a BCS game?
I was first thinking of this in regards to potentially redshirting some of the older guys if there is mutual interest. You can redshirt any year, so if there is mutual agreement can Simon walk into Meyer's office and say he wants a chance to play for it all in 2013 and redshirt in 2012?
Also, towards the end of the year, will we see more young guys in starting positions than you normally would?
I know Meyer told the freshman that there wouldn't be redshirting at OSU, but that's a sales pitch often and maybe a guy WANTS to play 4 years as a starter and wants to redshirt this year. In other years that may not be an option but Meyer has more leeway now I'd say?
Just a little different thread for people to discuss

I was thinking that, as a hypothetical example, if they're 8-1 and they're winning 20-7 late in the 3Q at PSU, Urbz wouldn't worry about playing percentages, he'll continue to treat every series as its own battle and another opportunity to get better.
And, please, don't tell me that he'll never play the percentages when they ARE in the running for a championship because he absolutely will.
I think this is a very important question. I really wish some of the older guys would come back in 2013.. but for some reason I just don't see it happening.
We're really going to see what Urban is made of as a coach this year, as motivation will be harder to come by than normal. Sure, they shouldn't have to worry too much about getting pumped for UM, Wiscy, MSU, or Nebraska, but what about Indiana or Purdue? I think Urban has to be pretty strict about pulling guys who loaf or don't look motivated. You don't work hard, you don't play.
Any chance in us adding a extra game to the 2012 schedule like USC did with Hawaii the one year?
@Otrain, I think NCAA closed up that loophole.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
You know what I never thought of that. I would love to see Simon come back
12-OH
I remember hearing people talk about that (maybe Beau Bishop of 10tv?) wondering about these "what if" scenarios of a lot of the seniors red-shirting to come back for 2013. This might create a log-jam as Urban continues to go out and get more recruits. I don't see anybody doing it but who knows.
I think the team definitely wants to prove that 6-7 was a fluke. It's almost like "we've got nothing to play for, so let's just go win them all." No idea what the mentality will be, but I think Urban definitely wants to find some speed guys on offense for '13.
Simon will be a senior this year right? How would he come back?
Dallas, they are referring to redshirting the seniors-to-be (that haven't been redshirted yet, obviously) to save them for the 2013 title run.
It is crazy and I don't see it happening, but the guys that could redshirt during the bowl ban year are:
John Simon, Jordan Hall, Storm Klein, Reid Fragel, Adam Homon, Zach Boren
Did I miss anyone?
@DBIT- Storm Klein doesn't need to redshirt. Not going to get much action next year and that would probably go double for 2013.
If you ain't a Silver Bullet, you're a target
They won't be redshirting seniors.
I would agree with you. Just listing the possibilities
Add Nate Williams to that list as well I'm relatively sure. He was taking a greyshirt for this past year, and I think still has a redshirt left. Might be good to give him an extra year to heal up.
Reid Fragel may want more time for his TE --> OT move.
John Simon could want it just for the title run
Jordan Hall and Storm Klein might get the boot from younger, more talented kids if they stay.
Not sure of Homan and Boren. I don't know what Meyer plans to do with FBs
Ummm Nate Williams didn't take a greyshirt. Greyshirt is an unofficial term for when an incoming recruit commits to a school but defers his enrollment until after the upcoming season. Sometimes this is done for grade purposes, such as what Carlos Hyde and Cardale Jones did by going to FUMA. Greyshirting has also been used in situations where teams have more verbal commitments than they have scholarships for so they'll ask a kid to defer his enrollment. You cannot use a greyshirt while you are on scholarship.
BigSwede,
My bad. I thought it was called a medical greyshirt. What is he being granted then?
Williams got a medical redshirt so he could still redshirt another year I believe.
I was just throwing it out there. In regards to both playing the games and the guys playing
Although it would be nice redshirting those senors like Simon that could be very effective in 2013 I doubt it will happen. I feel like that would be a slap in the face to the NCAA which is not the message Meyer would be trying to send out especially since were on probation.
Coach Meyer is too much of a competitor to treat next year differently than any other year. If you have listened to any of his interviews, it is pretty clear that this guy is going to play to win. The best guys are going to play, period. All the talk about redshirting seniors is crazy! Think about what that would do to the scholarship situation.
From what I have seen thus far from the Meyer philosophy of "relentless effort", I suspect that 2012 won't be handled any differently than any other year thereafter. As mentioned above, it is possible there will be more of a "go for broke" attitude at certain times, in certain situations, but I wouldn't expect him to turn into a Les(lie) Miles and start munching grass and calling for fake field goal bouncing fumblerooskies. BTW - I'm sure I don't need to remind all you excited Buckeye fans that there is a "bowl" game next year - it's called the OSU-TTUN game, you know, The Game - what else matters at the end of next year? - Bowl Shmol........
I know that Meyer is going to remind the team that hey, we have a bowl game, "The Buckeye Bowl" and guess what it's a home game, also there is playing for national rating like USC being #5 at the end of last season, and he will need to stress that to help set up for a 2013 run. Jabba the Hoke is crapping his pants, as he can't beat Meyer on the recruits and has wondered into the biggest rivalry ever where he has to coach against one of the best coaches of all time, yeah not a good situation for him.

Theres no need to redshirt any seniors... The Buckeyes will just reload with all the incomming talet and some of the 2nd & 3rd third team players will become staters.
I expect Urban will come in and coach the Buckeyes his first year pretty much like he did with Florida his first year. The B1G is a tough conf to play in week after week , ask Penn St & Nebraska as they were expected to dominate the conf. Buckeyes cant overlook any team as they all seem to bring their "A Game" for the Buckeyes
O H I O is the Buckeye State
