Ehh, not his fault. No healthy Gronk and lots of dropped passes in the second half, the biggest one being Welker's drop in that could have iced the game. It was a tough catch, but it's one which Welker has made routinely throughout his career. I actually and one of the few who thinks O'brien is going to end up being a spectacular hire for Penn State. I don't think a lot of recruiting would have done them much good anyway. Why go after 2 and 3 star recruits this year - which is all Penn State would get amid the turmoil recently - when you can save the scolarships and use them for more 4 and 5 star recruits in the future? Penn State's defense and a manageable non-conference schedule will get them back to 10 wins this year and it will be much easier to recruit after a 10-win 2012 season a year removed from the Sandusky debacle with a new regime than it would have been to recruit this year amidst the turmoil. Instead of signing 22-25 2/3 star guys this year, they'll stick with 19 signees and be able to sign 25 3/4 star (and a few five star guys) next year, which would probably put them in the Top 10 for recruiting.

Do they really win 10 games this year?

I think he's a good enough coach, and PSU has enough talent he should be able to win between 7-9 games and hop right back in the recruiting wagon next season. I know alot of Buckeyes fans hate PSU, IMO we need all of our schools strong so we don't keep shitting down our leg in bowls, and embarrassing the B1G.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

O'Brien is the worst hire in the Big Ten since Minnesota decided to hire Tim Brewster. Danny Hope with his two wins over the Bucks is the 3rd worst hire.

He will hold the fort down until this scandle is gone then Penn State will higher a bigger name. Remember the old saying" Never replace a Legend"

Obrien the worst hire since Brewster? I think we should at least wait until after one season to be able to say something so provocative. The reaction to Brewster was kind of "meh" until he hired what was supposedly a top-notch staff of assistants. Then Gopher fans were all like "ZOMG WE'RE GOING BACK TO PASADENA! BREWSTER IS FO' REAL!" until they went 1-11 in his first year. Then he had a winning season the next year and it was "Ok, maybe this guy just needed to get his guys in place". And then they promptly went back to sucking and it was "Fire Brewster!". I'll give Obrien at least two seasons before I judge him (unless he is personally responsible for a handful of dumb calls that directly lead to losing games). I agree with Billy in that they'll probably hang on to BOB for a 3-5 years while the scandal blows over, at which point Obrien probably goes back to the NFL (as a head coach, if he has success with PSU) and Penn State brings in a big time guy.

I honestly don't understand why people are so negative toward him.  I'd be very excited if I was a high school kid and he was going to be my coach

The message i got from Bill was that a super bowl ring was more important than being the head coach of PSU.. There was some recruits waiting to see who the new coach at PSU would be before they commited to another school . so it is possible the class could have been better than it ended if he would have been there. I really dont see them having a good 2012 season and that will have a negative impact on the 2013 recruiting.

Thats my OPINION on O'brian

O H I O is the Buckeye State

I'm not sure if I would be "excited" about Obrien possibly being my coach. He is in a tough situation. Remember this scandal isn't going away, so much more is yet to come in the next several months. And Obrien is going to have an impossible task of trying to hold the fort down. Every B1G coach is going to recruit the state of PA that much harder as a result of this for the coming years. I would be surprised if he lasted 5 years. If he does find a way to win at PSU he would go to the top of every programs wish list. (besides tOSU of course)

While its cool that they are going to get the Pat's former OC, so what? Iowa's getting the LB's coach from the winning SB team!!!  Per an Iowa recruit, from BHGP:

"The Iowa hawkeyes will be gettin a new defensive coordinator....the LB coach from the NEW YORK GIANTS!!!!"

Kids are really only going to care so much I think, especially given the Pat's didn't win (what have you done for me lately?) and BOB's otherwise scant resume (compared to Urb's championship wall).

I've also noticed how on a lot of the Penn State blogs (can't help but glance at them on Google Reader while I get to the OSU blogs), BOB seems to want to pursue a more southern recruiting strategy. Yea good luck with that. They'll basically be looking to get the kids that Alabama, Florida, FSU, LSU, Miami, Texas, NC, Georgia, et al in the region don't want, and that true national powers like USC, ND, and tOSU can't reel in to come play away from home. And yes, I call ND a "national power" in the loosest sense. All the while they seem to be to some degree turning down their in state focus, while Urbz has been ramping his up. Granted, the state of Ohio produces enough quality recruits for the entire Big Ten to feast on three stars. This while Pennsylvania spits out only the occasional high caliber talent (for us to grab). But still man, gotta start at home before you can branch out, am I right? Or at least regionally, given your odds for the SE kids at a place like PSU are much more slim.

Bright side of reading Penn State blogs? Getting to see on another team's fan site how you can likely pencil us in for the #2 QB nationally and his five star WR friend. It's getting to be an embarrasment or richest (almost).

O'Brien was hired for one reason and one reason only, to captain the ship post pedo-gate. His W/L record won't mean much to the administration as much as being the antacid to an acidic situation. I have my doubts he's there for long, 3 yrs. min, 5 yrs. max.
