What does the futre hold for Rod Smith? He looked like a stud comming in but had some fumbling issues when he saw the field. He also saw some time at LB in practice. Will he be in the already stacked RB rotation (Hall, Hyde, Smith, Dunn, Ball) or play defense? Primarily special teams?

The kid is a stud and it was aggravating to see him fumbling when he had the ball in key spots of the field (one yard line) but he is a great talent. Whatever happens the coaches need to figure something out with this kid because he is one hell of an athlete.
I don't speak for anyone else, but he has issues HOLDING ONTO THE FOOTBALL & that's NOT GOOD! He MUST fix that to be on the field. Fumbling the football nearly 50% of the time you have it & coughing it up in the redzone when your team needs a score in 2 straight games to me is unacceptable. I'm sure he'll be better this season & will see the field because he's very very talented, he just has to take care of the football.
Shendig
I didn't see anything on the field out of that made me think wow this guy is going to be awesome. When Hyde was out performing him everyone talked crap about Hyde but still loved Smith. The Smith love is much like the Sabino love I guess. Big talent coming in, not much to show for on the field. Personally, I think he could be very good. I don't worry as much about him since I think Hyde is going to be great and Dunn probably will be too. Ball is probably going to be good too lol. Then we have a RB or 2 coming in next year too.
The biggest thing is I want him to stick around so we can land that brother of his in the 2013 class.
Talbert, I got news for you....if you think Hyde is good lol Brionte Dunn is gonna be a monster. If you haven't watched Warren Ball (I have)....you'll be pleasantly surprised with his versatility, hands, & speed. he's gonna be a solid contributor @ OSU before it's all said & done.
Shendig
I'd be very surprised if the fumbles thing continues. It's happened to a ton of young backs, very correctable issue. I think Rod Smith is going to get a lot of carries next year with Carlos Hyde. See both of them getting slightly more touches than Jordan Hall, who will be put more in a slot/hybrid role JMHO.
My pro-Rod Smith thoughts have nothing to do with my hopes that I will once again be able to wear my #2 jersey with pride.
If you ain't a Silver Bullet, you're a target
Capn, Make It So...
I wanna see Hyde get more touches this yr he had a break out game verse Nebraska then got benched the rest of the season. Throw Hall in the Percy Harvin roll this year. The great thing about Urban is we know the best player will be on the field reguardless of senority. Hopefully Rod gets his stuff together and holds on to the ball
I think when people see Smith, they think Beanie Wells part 2. Heck, I see Beanie/Eddie II and hope for it. Those are two first round guys who not many players can live up to.
I hope he works into the rotation because he should be our 3rd and 1 type back who can get the tough yards.
I don't think anyone aside from Hall has shown they can be consistantly good. Hyde was far and away the 2nd best last year but I think if Smith fixs his fumbleitous he can be there too.
I think Hyde/Smith will split a lot of the inside carries with Hall getting a few inside but trying to get outside and split out in the slot. Depending on how quickly the frosh pick up blitz schemes etc they will likely work in as well.
Are we redshirting any of them?
Yeah I think Smith will work into the rotation. But I think Hall (unless a new role is found for him) and Hyde are your starters. I think whatever shenanigans had Smith sitting at home around bowl time will make him third string coming into this season.
I know the drops hurt us last year. But I remember Beanie and Eddie both having trouble hanging onto the ball in their first years.
Here's hoping he has a great year so Ohio State can land his brother.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't see Hyde as a starter. He certainly stepped in a played decently last year, but that's exactly what I think he is; a decent fill-in starter. On most Big Ten teams he'd be a great starter, but on OSU he feels like the back we have between great backs. He did really, really well but I think we've already seen his limits. I don't see him as a playmaker. I think Smith has the potential to be a true playmaker, but we'll never see it if he fumbles so often.
To me Hyde/Smith is the difference between a nice dependeable car with some speed and blistering race car with maintenance issues.
I think either Dunn or Ball have a legit chance to take the starter's role. Dunn looks to me like a breakway stud. I can see Dunn as a starter, Hall all over the place, Hyde on shorter yardage and goalline, Smith ready to step in as he works on his fumbling issues.
No actual facts to back any of that up- entirely based on feelings/impressions over my 30 years of OSU football watching.
BT Albert hit it right on the head. I've said this before and I'll say it again..I don't think he'll do much here.

Here you CPlunk, however the situation may work out like in the early 90's when Raymont Harris emerged from a jumble of unproven RB's, all with potential and different skill sets, to take over the position and become a stud.
I believe Hall, Hyde or Smith, given 17 to 18 attempts a game with improved offensive scheme, could become a 1,000 yard rusher.
All these canidates are Buckeyes, so here's to hoping for the best.
EDIT: here is a link to Raymont's OSU career, redshirt freshman, 3 vanilla years, then bingo! 1,300 yards 12 tds.

any of these kids can do it, if opportunity meets hard work and dedication.
The kid is only going to be a RS sophomore next year. With a new head coaching staff every player is going to have to earn his spot on the depth chart. For all we know, he could end up being the team's #1 back next year. Let the young men compete and see who rises to the top. Every one of these kids was a high school standout (Smith scored 66 tds in high school, good enough for 8th best in Indiana prep history). I think it's interesting so many people assume that a couple of true freshman are going to jump past a kid who has had two more years to study the game and practice against division 1 college talent. These incoming freshmen have yet to even practice against college upperclassmen and prove their talent at the next level.
And like JohnBlair said, with so much depth, these players may only get one season as a featured back. But that's enough time for them to make their mark and earn a chance to play professional ball.
Think Eddie George against the Illini as a frosh and later as a senior.
Same deal here, hopefully.
LCB
I thinks its great to have this kind of problem. So many good backs, and limited touches to offer them. They are going to go into spring ball on an even plane...no seniority. It will be an all out war between these guys to prove they belong, and prove they are the guy for the job. And look at the defensive talent that meyer and staff just rolled in. Imagine having to go up against the silver bullets every day in practice. It can only make you that much better, and these guys are going to push each other. I really don't know who will be the guy. Or if there will even be one guy. All I know is urban and the offensive staff are going to put these guys thrugh the paces, and in the end they will be the deciders. And I feel pretty good about all these guys, and I love smiths potential. Eddie george and beanir type size and strength, but might be a little faster than both of them. Fumbles can be cured, and I for one hope to see what this kid can do.
Fumbling problems are usually easy enough to fix. Eddie George and Beanie Wells had fumbling issues in their freshman years, fixed those issues, and wound up being amongst the greatest RBs in school history. I wouldn't just give up on the kid - there's too much upside.
Class of 2010.
@CPLUNK I feel like we need to get Hyde more touches to see if he's worthy of a starting position he definately shined in the Nebraska game and showed he had break away speed (he runs a 4.4 and had a 63 yd TD) I feel like your hopes are too high on Dunn and Ball. I see them both as contributers down the line but not necessary too much this year. Ball was hurt much of last year which is why I think he'll be redshirted this year. Dunn could get some touches on short yardage situation but doesn't have 4.4 speed like Hall and Hyde have. Hall will be a great contributer too this yr but I feel he fits more of the Percy Harvin roll and would be more effective in the slot.
Imagine shot gun formation Braxton taking the snap Hyde next to him with having the option of motioning Hall on the other side of Braxton. Having a triple option threat btw those 3 is a scary thought because each one of them can take it to the house
I'm willing to bet that the kid never starts here..and probably ends up transferring. Anyone willing to wager? In this case I wouldn't mind being wrong, hope he improves vastly.

For what it's worth..I said the same things about mo Wells and J Berry. Mo Wells decided to stick it out at OSU though.

@ Otrain
There's no way Hall and Hyde run 4.4 buddy, no way! Don't believe me wait till the Combine
. Hall is 4.5 at best, Hyde seems like a 4.5 guy who ran an alleged 4.3..have to see it to believe that one. Not to many 230 pound backs can do that in the past or present.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I don't know about Hall but Hyde is def a 4.4 guy. He is our fastest running back, or at least he was last year when they were all timed. Doubt Dunn or Ball can beat him.
If you ain't a Silver Bullet, you're a target
If Smith ever starts or not, really isn't important enough to me to wager on. I can't imagine you have seen enough, in his limited game play, to know either. Smith has 3 years left. He is a 20 year old young man. In stead of lathering his future with your bottle of Elmer's white glue and pasting his future in the fail column, how bout waiting a bit and see how he responds to the new coaching staff and a new opportunity in a new offense.
As was posted above, proclaiming high school players will have better careers than Smith, at this point, is ridiculous.
Anyone who ever saw Cie Grant play defensive back as a freshman and sophomore, getting consistently burnt and turned around, nohow could have guessed he would have applied the game winning pressure in Glendale in January of 2003, as a linebacker. Heck my dad and I used to refer to Cie Grant as "toast", for how often he got burnt. Grant grew, got stronger, and provided OSU with a monumental 1/11th of a dominating 2002 defense.
Dont worry we have a new "toast" on the team in the form of "howard island" (Usually because he's standing in no mans land alone!)
How good are Rod's hands? Someone of his size and athleticism could move to TE/Hback
John Blair, I don't want the kid to fail..I wish all these players the best. I do however seem to be right about these things for some reason..we'll have to wait and see obviously..I just think there are things going against him in a big way
Hall and Hyde are clearly better an shoul get the most carries next season.
He didnt really go up against the most stellar hs competition in Indiana..I know I know that one isn't isnt really an argument, but still has to be considered in the equation.
Ball and Dunn are both HIGH quality recruits coming in..that played pretty tough ball in talent rich Ohio.
The fumble problem is obvious, but can be improved of coarse.
He missed the trip to te bowl game..it may seem like a small stupid thing but it is inexcusable period!
He wasn't that impressive in limited time wen he was playin in games.
Heres to Rod having monster off season and proving fools like me wrong.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
If they would have just redshirted him last year we wouldnt be sitting here wondering if he's going to transfer and how that affects his brother Jaylon's recruitment.
They need to give him the same treatment Rashard Mendenhall got his first year in Pittsburgh. He fumbled a couple of times in his first few starts and the team made him carry a football with him everywhere he went and if he dropped it when they tried to knock it out, etc. he had to pay $1000.
Now I know Smith is just a 20 year old kid with no paycheck but they could do something similar. He'd stop fumbling real quick if he had to run all day after each fumble. Just sayin'
I might be mistaken but I believe he did redshirt his first year here. This past year was his redshirt freshman year. He was in the same class with Corey Brown, Christian Bryant and others from 2010.
I understand/am with you Buckeye Jason, some OSU hyped recruit fails have been easy to spot. Never saw Mo Wells ever run through a shoestring tackle, or burst past a Kent State linebacker. Never saw Willey Mobley even don a uniform.
Smith has had such a limited amount of play, his future is too tough to tell. Player breakouts don't always happen at the sametime or from the minute players gets their first snap.
I wouldn't be surprised if Hall has a 4.6 40 time. I've always noticed how slow that kid is for a "speed" guy. He just doesn't have the ability to be a "Harvin type" player like some have expected him to be.
October 20th: National Kenneth Guiton Day
Hall is purely a quick burst player with tremendous agility. He runs with short strides and is not a top end speed athlete. He could probably beat most people in a 10-15 yard sprint but would be beat in longer 40-100 yard runs.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
I think it is simply too early to make a projection on this kid. Let's wait until after spring practice, when Urban gets to see Smith, Hall, Dunn, and Hyde all together. We'll be able to comment better we see them running some plays in the new offense.
I trust Urban will be able to identify who should be playing. As far as Hall goes, he looked incredibly slow this year, especially in the Gator Bowl. I am guessing Hall thought he would have to carry the load at RB when Boom was suspended and bulked up to hold up to the pounding. Hopefully the new coaching\strength staff will have him drop 15 lbs and he will gain some speed back. He's never going to be a 20+ carry guy for us.
I dont know about having Hall drop 15 pounds..he is pretty lean, with a compact muscular frame. Speed Is tough to develop if you have short choppy strides..you can develop explosiveness through training but pure natural speed is another story. He'll be fine..I think he'll have a great season. He's one of he best players on the team regardless of position.
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
Rod Smith has way too much talent to count him out. Besides we have a bigtime playmaker in Miller and his abilities should open things up for alot of the other wepons we will have on offense.
O H I O is the Buckeye State
guarantee Rod rushes for over 400. And prov 3 other backs. Urban rotates.
I think that's a lock of a guarantee on Rod, StatutoryGlory-- I wouldn't be surprised if he is THE leading RB rusher. I have a hunch that Marotti and Urban know how to cure a case of the fumbles (understatement of the year?). Hyde and Smith are going to be a dominant 1-2 punch.
If you ain't a Silver Bullet, you're a target
So, other than the fact that he's big, runs upright, and drops the ball why do people think he's going to be Beanie/Eddie? I'm not rooting against the kid, but why specifically do people think he's going to be great? I'm not buying the well Eddie fumbled a lot as a freshman so Smith is the next Eddie routine. Why? Hyde actually did something when he played. I didn't see anything in game that proved Rod would be great. He never really busted off any long runs. Never showed a nasty stiff arm or this blazing speed. I just didn't see it.
How much of the love/hype for him is the recruiting rating and body similarities that the kid has with former Buckeye greats and how much of it comes from things people have actually seen him do in games? That's all I'm trying to say. Why should we want this kid to get more touches than Hyde, Hall, Dunn, or Ball? No one has given any compelling argument to convince me I'm wrong. Hell I'd love for the all to be great and average 5 yards per carry. Why should I think Smith is going to be a star though?
@Btalbert, Smith showed really good burst and acceleration when he played against Akron and Toledo. However I agree with you that Hyde will be the starter and will be the best running back on the team. I do think that Ball and Smith will get the second most amount of carries. I'm not high on Bri'onte Dunn or Jordan Hall. They both run in the 4.6s, which for a running back is just plain slow.
@William - but the difference with Dunn is that he's is bigger than the linebackers who will try and tackle him. Surprising agility too.
@William - The mistake too many fans make is putting too much stock in 40 times. Quickness, agility, game speed(yes there is a difference), and toughness are what matters in football. How often do you see RB's, or anyone for that matter, run 40 yards in a straight line in a game? In a RB I am more concerned with their burst off the line which you CANNOT measure from a 40 time. The 40 is a good indicator of overall speed, but you simply cannot judge someone by that alone.
Brandon Saine is a good example of how important agility is. The guy had some serious speed, broke the state record in the 100m as a junior in high school. However he lacked agility and elusiveness. If he got a head of steam and some open field he nobody could catch him, but he couldn't create space on his own all that well.
Saine 100% should've been a WR. His short area quickness was crap to be a RB but his size, physique, hands, and speed would have been ideal for WR.
Dunn isn't an agile runner and he doesn't have great burst either. Hall at the very least has a good intial burst and is rather shifty. You have none of those with Dunn. Dunn is a slow North-South runner. I think of a slower Brandon Jacobs.
Actually short area quickness is even more important for a WR...you need that in order to break off routes and create separation from DB's. Saine's build at 5'11'' 220lbs is not even close to being an ideal frame for a WR. Saine played the position he was meant for, he just didn't have all the tools needed. In any case, he appears to be doing just fine seeing as Green Bay thinks he's good enough to work into their rotation.
I was watching a broadcast and Saine got in, had a nice couple of runs. The announcer said this is a guy the Packers love. I was thinking, damn I didn't even know he was on an NFL roster. Ya know what though? He looked pretty good.
Don't get me wrong I think Carlos Hyde is a great back and will do really well for us this year, but he really struggled to break long runs. He is the type of guy that gets 5 yards a carry. A lot of times last year he had one man to beat and all he would do is run the guy over and go down. I think Rod is a little more dynamic with more potential to make that last guy miss with either the stiff arm or shifty move.
Hopefully we stay in good graces with him long enough for Jaylon to come on board.
I don't think Hall is that quick either, he was very slow in the Florida game. And anyway I think in Meyer system Hall will get touches at WR and RB. I think he gets 10-15 touches a game between catches and runs. There are a lot of positions to shake out before next season, Everyone seemed to LOVE Smith all last spring and into camp but he never got in, I woudln't be surprised if he gets some carries this year.
How can we make sweeping judgements about Dunn when we haven't even seen the kid in scarlett and gray yet? There was a reason Meyer made Dunn one of his first recruiting priorities.
@BucksShockTheWorld
I'm thinking you might have missed the Nebraska game. It was Hydes really only start and he had a 63yd TD run which I think was the 2nd longest of the year behind braxtons. He tore up Nebraska. We need to give this kid more touches so he can be the playmaker he's meant to be. He has 4.4 speed and power like you said to run over people
Short area quickness doesn't matter for the deep threat. Especially one with a 10.4 100m. Even if a corner is even with him he can use his bulk to outrebound him. Should've been a WR.
^ You are 100% wrong. If all you can run are fly routes defenses will scheme against that rendering that WR useless. How many WR's do you see at 5'11''(if that) and 220 lbs?? With that frame it makes it difficult to contort your body to make the kinds of catches required of WR's. Saine is a RB...plain and simple. He just lacked the ability to make cuts w/o losing speed.
Hyde has only carried 20 times 1 time, against Toledo. He has had long runs, like the one mentioned against Nebraska, a 40 plus yarder against Toledo, a 47 yard run against IU too. He averages over 5 YPC, and a guy his size and speed that regularly gets 20-25 carries is going to inflict some pain in the 4th quarter of the game. Maybe if Bernard Transfers he'll be our Reggie Bush, and Carlos Hyde is the Lyndale White bruiser.
^ we all know how that went against osu
muck fichigan
BT albert has pretty much summed up what I've been thinking and saying about Rod Smith. I don't see the hype..maybe I will this season or next, but against shit competition he looked like a big wide receiver trying to be a running back, didn't look fluid or natural when he got touches at all.
Baring injury..Hall and Hyde will get most of the carries. Mark it down!
Run_Fido's favorite word is strawman.
BuckeyeJason: thank you for just ensuring that Rod Smith will have a breakout 2012. Any time someone says/writes "mark it down," he's begging for a prediction to go the other way.
Now, if you would please make some extremely rosy predictions for the TTUN and make sure in each case to write "mark it down, baby!" . . .
Well @Cincyosu I guess we will never know since our guys never made the move. There are plenty of NFL wrs 220+ I don't see a world of difference between a gut listed at 6'1 220 (Anquan Boldin) and a guy who is 5'11 220 (Saine) succeeding at WR. 2 inches of listed height is more important than any other physical gifts a guy might have. I'm pretty sure a bunch of gms in the Drew Brees draft agree with you. Troy Smith's draft too.
2 inches is alot when talking about how much weight you are carrying. And way to bring up one of the few that are close to Saine's height/weight. And when did Qb's become a part of your argument? But while on that subject, you once again listed the exception rather than the rule..
I'd like to add, that I hope Smith does pan out and is a great RB at Ohio State. I just didn't see what many others apparently do and I was looking for reasons people think he's going to be so great. Ohio State is better if Smith, Hyde, and Hall are all very productive backs. I didn't understand why everyone kind of just ignored what Hyde was able to do, like eh, but he's not that good, when he constantly outplayed Smith early on.
@ OTRAIN
I def caught the Nebraska game. I agree with you that Hyde is going to be a great productive back for us, and he has knocked off some big runs. He just frustrated me a lot last year by NOT making that last guy miss a lot of times which would put him up there as a great back instead of just a good one if he could. I like Rod a lot but Carlos was def the man last year. Hall took WAY too many carries away from him.
I loved Hyde's game since he stepped foot on campus. I love watching that kid run.
Texas and Michigan will rule the NCAA...."mark it down"....hehe
I hate both of those schools!
