Most of the document is just flat out blank.  Not just blacked out names here and there, huge chunks of the document just invisible.  Hilarious.  There is one page that has nothing except this

1.

a.

b.

c.

d.

Nothing else.  All completely "redacted".

Amazing how little attention is being given to other scandals that are much more severe. The tabloid media sure isn't equal in their stories.

I do not think that is what maestro was implying. What I am saying is that their coverage/investigative journalism for Oregon has been non existent

And the reason, right or wrong, that more attention was paid to our scandal had more to do with how big and nationally recogonized our fanbase is. What happens with us is NATIONAL in scope. People in Nevada could care less about seeing coverage of South Carolina's issues. OSU has a large and vocal fanbase and negative press generates eyeballs which equals $$$$.

^^ Same issue - very localized fanbase so constant coverage wont bring the big networks the eyeballs. Now once the allegations are officially announced you will see this in the news again. Then it will die down until the penalty phase. Outside of schools like USC, ND, UM, PSU, FSU, Texas, and maybe Alabama...there simply isnt the national interest in non stop scandal coverage.

Justifiable, or otherwise unnatural attention is still an illustration of bias, the reasons are immaterial.

I don't know if I go as far to say that ESPN has a thing against Ohio State, but there is circumstantial evidence leading to that conclusion: the lawsuit for discovery documents; the degree of coverage between tatgate compared to Miami, Oregon, and Auburn; the nonstop love of the SEC; Mark May's continued employment.

There was a really good 11w article about this recently. It's far too much information to scoff at and say that fans are overreacting.

I think you are wrong about Oregon. A big scandal at Oregon would still make headlines. I'm not asking them to do to Oregon what the did to Ohio state but they could at least send one reporter there. I don't think that it is too much to ask. It's the lack of reporting, not the scope that bothers me.

@cincyosu.... Oregon is a "hot" brand right now. The Duck mascot and his crazy antics (how many commercials has he done for ESPN now?), the hip/cool uniform combinations, the "blur" offense, ties to Nike.... a scandal at Oregon would garner viewership if ESPiN actually decided to report on it.

2 Rose Bowls and a BCS NC Game in the past 3 years.  I'd say there is enough national exposure for Oregon football to make it a "Coast to Coast" story.  I also 100% agree with STATUTORYGLORY, this lack of coverage by ESPN has everything to do with $$$ Nike (and Knight's other companies) pays the network for advertising.  It's a circle jerk ESPN has pulled the curtain on.

I also agree with AWWWWWWWWop, the fact that not one reporter has been sent to cover the story in depth is a complete farce.  There was more false reporting about Jack Maxton, without a retraction, than anything done on the Ducks.

@ Biggy - I tell ppl to stop with the ESPN conspiracy because it makes the fanbase as a whole look silly. I have friends in other parts of the country who root for other teams who laugh when they hear stuff like that. ESPN makes MILLIONS from OSU and they know they can make more digging up dirt(which is why our story ran more consistently). I never said I liked it or agreed but ESPN does not want to see OSU fail.

@DMC

1) "Cirumstantial" evidence can be twisted to support whatever viewpoint to choose. It's called common sense. 2) ESPN is NOT the only news outlet in town, does that mean every other outlet is also against OSU for not reporting on these scandals more? The Miami, Oregon, and Auburn scandals only really had ONE issue. At OSU, we had something new come out every week to give ppl to talk about. Miami - everything revolves around Shapiro...but once this all gets sorted out and Miami gets served their NOI this will be a huge story again. Oregon - same thing, you can only talk about a recruiting service so much(even though Oregon will likely see some stiff punishments for this). Auburn - this actually was in the news quite a bit but again there is only so much to talk about. The other scandals(and worse than ours) happened at UNC, S Carolina, and recently UCF, but as I said there just isn't the national interest to cover this non stop.

Trust me, as an OSU fan it bothered me as well to see a new story every day. But we have the largest, most vocal fanbase in the country and had a program that was viewed as a model for compliance. Mix those things with a scandal and of course there is going to be alot of coverage. Heck the hometown Dispatch even joined in with shoddy reporting(the cars). Does that mean the dispatch hates OSU? No, but they know damn well that people will follow the story.

Set your avi
CincyOSU on 25 Feb 2012 - 11:35am #

@ Join - You have proven my point. Why are you acting like ESPN is the only game in town. Yahoo, SI, and CBS have treated these other scandals the same way. Do they also hate OSU? And Oregon may be successful now, but they do NOT have a NATIONAL fanbase.

And in regards to your Jack Maxton comment - that story originated from the hometown Dispatch, other outlets, including ESPN ran with it. Do they also hate OSU?

Negative stories bring eyeballs and page clicks which means ------ MONEY. I highly doubt ANY OSU fan has, or will, stop watching ESPN because of this scandal coverage. And if you claim to, you better not watch ABC either.

If I recall correctly every major sports website had a Miami headline the day the info about Shapiro was liked EXCEPT ESPN, who thought a baseball game deserved the headline more than a major sports scandal at a major university.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

DMcDougal24 on 25 Feb 2012 - 11:56am #

Giving me a "use common sense" argument? I know what circumstantial evidence is. If you have enough circumstantial evidence leading to a certain conclusion, you can come to that conclusion. It is not as strong as direct evidence, but cases are made every day with only circumstantial evidence.

As to ESPN being not the only show in town, you need to look at the treatment of different stories. When yahoo sports broke the Miami story, ESPN hardly touched it. Look at te trouble ESPN is in for hiding the Syracuse story. Look at espn's coverage of stories they break in relation to other outlets.

As the "worldwide leader" in sports, it's obvious that they need to be held to a higher standard and to objectively report all credible news. The amount of coverage they put on is up to them and is determined by views. Don't tell me the only reason they focused on tattoos so much is because we are Ohio State. There is too much evidence leading to other conclusions. And especially don't tell me to use common sense please

I think virtually every conspiracy theory (ESPN based or otherwise) is overblown.  Sure there are some incentives not to blow it up too big, but on the other hand there are incentives to get the story first and put it out there if people are interested in watching.  At the end of the day Nike will put ads wherever there are viewers.  And as long as they don't feel that ESPN is being unfair to them (reporting the news is not unfair) they aren't going to boycott.

CincyOSU- This point that you're trying to express about ESPN being just like other news services is invalid. Look no further than the Miami coverage- Here's a great illustration of how you're wrong on this point, and that ESPN does, indeed, have their own agenda: http://mgoblog.com/content/espn-last-guy-earth-find-out-about-miami

Personally I don't watch ESPN. I understand many people's objections to ESPN's so called "journalism."  BUT all news media has bias,  b/c of contracts with companies, parties, etc.  I know many in both Buckeye Nation and Nittany Lion Country hell the whole B1G,  feel the same way as many of you.  The only way to change ESPN is to hit them where it hurts, their wallets.  Don't watch. Support the B1G network, heavily.  (W Viginia football game on ESPN or Men's Volleyball on B1G network, I will watch B1G all day)  When Game Day comes to Columbus litter the area of signs mocking the world wide leader.  Sitting around and complaining won't do anything, the only way to make a change is to affect their bottom line.

So did everyone who is complaing about ESPN not covering the Oregon story see what news outlet the link at the top of this post will direct you too?  The first I heard of this information was from ESPN, so there's always that.

johnblairgobucks's picture
johnblairgobucks on 25 Feb 2012 - 7:57pm #

I have a hard time putting together these pieces:

Mike and Mike (a.m. radio show on ESPN Radio, and also aires on ESPN 2) did a Parody song about going to Ohio State and getting free cars, after it was reported by ESPN that 50+ players had shady links to Jack Maxton (ruff ruff).

Cam Newton's recruitment by Auburn situation was dealt with by 99% of ESPN personalities with the company line"we'll wait for the fact to come forth, before we judge the situation"

ESPN waited till investigations took place before even reporting on Oregon's situation.

.............................................................................................

Call me a conspiracy theorist all you want, but I feel ESPN went boarderline investigative reporting on OSU, falsely reported facts without retraction, and exaggerated situations at OSU, while they are comparatively nowhere to be found on issues at S.Carolina, Oregon, N Carolina, Auburn.

Heck, even Michigan bending the practice time rule has gotten more air time from ESPN, then Oregon, S. Carolina and Tennessee's violations combined.

Yeah, I heard about this on SportsCenter...oh wait...no I didn't.  Because violations at OSU are so much more important to report than violations at Oregon.  Oregon hasn't won a Rose Bowl or been a perennial top 10 team over the last 3 years or anything, after all...

ESPN didn't break anything. Several news outlets requested these documents from Oregon via public records, received them, and reported them. Nothing exclusive from ESPN and no opinion on their part either.

ESPN doesn't ever break any news.   Yahoo has been the source to break most of what's going on in college football.  Of course now that ABC and Yahoo! News have merged they are all under the same umbrella.  Let Wetzel and Robinson do the work now and they can regurgitate it.  Anyway, I didn't make my point to say ESPN is breaking any stories or what not.  I just think it's funny that since so many other outlets have reported it, the one link driving this post is from ESPN.

ESPN may make millions off of osu but theyd make Hundreds of millions more if the Big Ten Network never existed.  Let alone the leverage starting their own channel provided conferences with when negotiating with ESPN.  They hate the Big Ten and it's centerpiece.
