How did Stefon Digg's Maryland visit go?

chromedomebuck's picture
chromedomebuck on 5 Feb 2012 - 12:48pm #

Students chanted his name at the basketball game against UNC and early indications from different sites is that they rolled out the red carpet for him..Based on his previous visits, I'm sure UMD will be his leader after this weekend. Follows the trend. First it was AU, then UF, then tOSU, now it will probably be UMD with a slight edge in the Diggs' sweepstakes. Personally, I'm done reading too much into his visits because all of them have been "great". I don't think anyone actually knows where this kid is gonna end up. I'm hoping he's a Buckeye but I have no reason to truly believe he will other than I drink scarlet kool-aid.

speculation here, but I think it bodes well that OSU's visit was more recent than Auburn's and Florida's. yes, Maryland's was last...but...in the end --- OSU's tradition and Urban win out over Maryland and any other school. It's just too tough a combination to beat.

Supposedly some "in the know" posters on Bucknuts/Buckeyeplanet/some ohio state board who are generally right claim that Diggs gave Urban a silent verbal and the Maryland visit was just a courtesy.

"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."

I think that Maryland MAY hold a slight lead after that visit. It's a very interesting commitment to watch. OSU is the program with the legendary, established coach, electric quarterback and a system that will utilize him. Maryland is his home, and he'd immediately be one of their best players in a relatively weak conference. And he'd been a Florida lean for a while early on in his recruitment.

Right now, I think that they're all even. I won't be surprised with his decision, although I think it's more likely for him to end up here or at Maryland than Florida at this point. But I don't want to read too much into a high school senior's biggest life decision.

I wouldn't cheer for Michigan if they were playing the Taliban.

Gobucks22250's picture
Gobucks22250 on 5 Feb 2012 - 2:47pm #

Not to be a dick but how many times have you heard a kid say he had a horrible time on his vist? Not very many, recruits get the red carpet rolled out and have a good time 9 times outa 10. So its kind of a silly question to ask how his visit went.

OurHonorDefend09's picture
OurHonorDefend09 on 5 Feb 2012 - 2:47pm #

THEBADOWL, given OSU's recent success (or lack thereof), Diggs would become one of the best players on the team that has a chance to win a national championship while he is there. I understand what you're trying to say but I feel like if he thinks he is as good as he is (which I do), he will be confident he can take over whatever conference he plays in. Therefore, all Maryland has is proximity to home, which honestly, OSU isn't too far from Maryland. Obviously, not in comparison to Maryland, but certainly a lot closer than UF.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic right now, but if you are a top 10 player in a recruiting class I can't see someone having the attitude of "Wow, I'm good! I should just play shitty competition to make myself look even better!" Top caliber players want to compete against the best and Diggs would at either OSU or UF.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

I really think Urban and the staff know something we don't. After Urban said in the presser that OSU needed more speed at the skill positions I just can't see OSU not taking Neal if they didn't think that Diggs would be on board. After everthing we've seen from Urban and the staff, I just can't bet against Diggs not signing with OSU on the 10th.

I just don't see how if this kid is good enough to get an offer from Ohio State and Florida that he would choose Maryland.  If he's seriously thinking NFL in his future, then he'll get much better exposure at Ohio State or Florida.  How often does Maryland get nationally televised games?

OK first Neal was turned away bc the staff saw something they didn't like from the Neal camp---nothing to do w on field or Diggs. Second the info I was given was positive for OSU. That's all I can go off. This kid is a game player and I have said that from day one. I don't buy the UMD stuff but this kid can commit anywhere and it wouldn't surprise me. That being said my prediction is still Buckeye as of now

Thanks for the late-night update, Alex.

I watched only brief video of Neal and Diggs, respectively, and obviously I'm no talent scout. But Diggs seemed considerably more aggressive, on edge, and dynamic than Neal. You can't really tell for sure what they'll do at the next level, but two guys who just "jumped off the screen" were Diggs and Marcus. Hopefully, we'll get both of them . . .

Waiting to make a decision (the biggest of the young man's life so far) does not make one a diva. Signing day is the first day that someone can sign. I think we sometimes let our own impatience unfairly cloud our judgement about these kids that are making huge(!!!!!) decisions that will have a gigantic impact on their lives.

If Diggs were giving all kinds of interviews and lapping up attention from the media I might call him a "diva," but things have been rather low key so far, and he just finished his last official visit. Not faulting the kid for exploring all of his options.

Folks:

Per what Alex said -- it's not anything to do with what Neal does on the field.

I have no additional knowledge about the situation, but I believe that alot of people are looking at UFM's comment too literally.  I think that the comment was a metaphor.

I think that UFM meant that he was lucky enough to coach kids who didn't try to take the "easy way out" - on the field and off.  The type of kid, who when things got rough, he put is head down and tried to blast through it (rather than looking for a cop-out).  I believe that someone in Neal's camp did/said something that the staff believed that it indicated a pre-disposition not to be that type of person.

I am absolutely not speculating something as oenerous as Neal's dad presenting UFM with "an invoice for future services rendered".  Maybe the family wanted UFM to publicly generatee that Neal would be the starter or ensure that another incomming freshman would redshirt (clearing Neal's way to the two-deep).  Perhaps, the staff was laying out the workout regiment that Marotti expected Neal to start before he came to campus and the family said that that had a routine that THEY were happy with.  Maybe Neal's father was boasting about 'how successful he son was, while taking plays off'.

I have no doubt that Neal will be an electric player whenever he goes, but maybe the staff thinks that he (or the father) is going to be a headcase that they just don't want to deal with.

Beanie Wells was the type to step out of bounds?  I don't know, dude flat out crushed people with his stiff arms. There were some guys I actually felt sorry for he Effed them up so bad with the stiff arm of justice. He hurdled an Illinois player in a game.  I never saw Beanie as the type to avoid contact.  He got hurt a lot and I guess that always kind of made people think he was soft, but seemed to me like he was plenty tough.

Neal is a stud.  To abruptly cut him off says to me that our standing with the NCAA would/could get worse if we are messing with this kid.  We are on probation, don't forget.  I'm sure Urban operates on a "zero tolerance" recruiting policy; he has no choice.  No kid is bigger than Ohio State. None.

Beanie ran out of bounds a few times...usually it happened not long after injuries. Unfortunately, he had more than his share of injuries. He also stiff armed plenty of people flat to their backs or lowered his shoulder or hurdled them on his way to long yardage. Beanie was - IMO one seriously bad man and I could give a shit what Todd McShay said on draft day...I know we're a tough crowd (buckeye fans) but calling Beanie soft??? Damn.

I never thought I'd see a day where it was implied Beanie was soft.  I did go after seeing some of these comments to see some of his video highlights and I guess he did step out of bounds a lot, but usually he was still trying to stiff arm or he still lowered the shoulder for a couple of extra yards.  There were also several videos where he just plowed people over or damn near broke their necks with stiff arms or examples where he literally pushed people into the endzone with him on his way in.

I also agree with the notion that Beanie was a bad man.  I guess, though, you can scan through tape on anyone and find one example where he didn't take on a CB.  However, while looking for that one clip, you'd find about a dozen where he was absolutely destroying guys.

My experience with BCast info. is that he is pretty reliable and waits until he is positive before he posts some nonsense. Even with Urban's hiring, he didn't post anything until he knew for a fact it was a "done deal".

Perhaps Alex is hearing some of these same things BCast is? I wouldn't put Diggs anywhere near "lock" status because kids change their minds easily (being only 22...I know this to be the case), but if BCast took the time to post it I have reason to believe he truly feels Diggs will be a Buckeye. Outside of Alex and 11W, BCast is the most accurate I've seen.
