Gordon "Foot in Mouth" Gee

<Rant>

When is the president of THE Ohio State University going to learn to shut up? I'm a Buckeye alumn ('03) and a life long fan but I'm embarrassed by his comments which are not only off-base and offensive, but out of touch and out of left field.  When is the board going to put a muzzle on this clown?

Hey Gordon, get a life. And a real tie. And shut your goddamn mouth.

Here here!!!

OSU grad, class of '98.  My first couple of years at OSU were during Gee's first stint as president.  Was happy to see him come back for the second time because I thought he was very good for the university as a whole.

Throughout the whole troubles of '10-'11 I continued to defend Gee (although still think that Gene Smith should be gone) on the basis that I still think he is good for the university.

However, he absolutely needs to STFU about anything regarding the athletic department, NCAA, football standings, etc...

While I agree that there are (many) times when he needs to hold his tongue, he is a tremendous personality and brings an energy to the student body.  IMO, it would take a very, very abrasive comment before I'd want him gone.

What he said wasn't a big deal. What he said about Tressel, and TCU weren't a big deal either. For whatever reason people are just looking to get on Gee about every little thing. We're allowed to respond to what BB said, but the President of the school is suppose to remain quiet?

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I know he does a lot of good for the academics at OSU, but when it comes to athletics he just needs to as the saying is "be seen and not heard". Let him do all the great academic stuff, but tell him to stay away from commenting athletic stuff besides congradulating people.

it is a big deal. your the president of a major university, not a writer of a blog or a random person's facebook status (which is what this kind of comment sounds a lot like) "We hired the best coach and we went out and got the best kids so get a life"...as an alumnus, I would like it if he would think before he speaks and talks more professionally.

Non-story, just like the Sisters of the Poor and Polish Army comments. People are way too uptight about things these days. HOWEVER, I agree that he just needs to stop commenting about sports matters, considering the media jumps his ass every time and its just not worth the coverage.

"You're pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again," said Meyer. "Do it a little harder next time."

Absolutely hysterical. I applaud Gee for what he said. All of you people that are going "ZOMG what has Gee done, he should so STFU?!??!?!" need to relax. It was funny.

Yes - it's funny.  Yes, it, along with the TCU comment, were relatively harmless.  No, I am not calling for president Gee to lose his job.  But all of these instances lumped together with the PR nightmare that was the Jim Tressel press conferences ("golly, I hope the coach doesn't fire me") just shows a lack of diplomacy from the leader of this university.  I personally expect more from someone in his position.

Met the man today for the second time at the Governor's State of the State speech. Dr. Gee is a great advocate, a great representative, and a damn fine president.

I guess I will always defend Gee because as a student at the time of his arrival, I could not wait for the old president to leave (can't remember her name, only the nickname given to her which isn't appropriate).  Besides, he said kind of what everyone was thinking this time...

I agree that everybody is way too sensitive nowadays, but a president of a university should never make comments like he does. Putting down other universities (TCU) so blantantly is embarassing to tOSU as a whole. If one of the athletes tweeted something like that, they would have been punished. Our athletes represent the school and the president of the university should do the same fiftyfold. Immature at best.

Ands lets be honest, if this was the president of any other university saying this stuff constantly, you would all be thinking "what an idiot". So lets not be biased here

The only athletes that would be punished for tweeting about TCU's schedule would be those who go to BYU

I don't know. The guy certainly isn't boring or typical. He also isn't afraid to have a sense of humor about things. Of all the things he ever said that got him some flack - maybe the "little sisters of the poor" thing deserved some scrutiny & I only say that as it made tOSU look like a bit of a bully. Either way I think it's a breath of fresh air that he spouts off here and there. Who's to say what a president should or shouldn't say about athletics. As to him defending our coach & saying that BB should get a life...sorry but he's right & I loved it.

I actually find it refreshing that Gee doesn't always go with the flow when it comes to academia, by being politically correct and afraid to speak his true feelings. I loved what he said about Bielema.

Couldn't disagree with the rant in this thread any more. Gee is an outstanding President- what he has been/ is continuing to do with the academic developement and overall prestiege of The Ohio State University is, IMO, unbelieveable.

He got ripped, as he should have, for the Tressel comment last spring, for not understanding the complexities of the situation. However, this situation is completely different and the comments in regards to Bielema getting were great; I couldnt' have been any happier reading them. Public opinion was signifigantly against Bielema & Dantonio, and Gee threw the masses a bone, so to speak. His comments are literally an advert for tOSU, and a brilliant one at that.

EDIT: How is what Gee said "out of touch and out of left field." It's actually very in touch with what's going on if you've read the news. Every sporting news outlet was talking about Urban making waves in the B1G + the reaction it got from other coaches.

"When is the board going to put a muzzle on this clown?" Umm.. probably never. Gee is doing amazing, unprecedented things for the development of tOSU as an academic institution, which is his primary job. The Board, like almost all Buckeyes I know, is pretty pro-Gee.

Lastly, his bow tie is perfect.

Buddha Buck - I think you've spending too much time on the ESPiN message boards, and buying in to the OSU haters bad-mouthing OSU and Gee. For what? For speaking his mind. He should be commended.

Stannding up for your coach shouldn't be a problem. Especially after the entire mess of last spring. To have someone publicly question the integrity and ethics of a man you've chosen to represent your university isn't something you should let slide. Gene smith did the same thing, and people commended him. Gee says something, and he is chastised? Why, because it wasn't a prepared statement like smiths? I fully support both gene smith and gordon gee for having the stones to publicly admonish that cry baby from wisky. The good name of The Ohio State University has been drug the mud enough. And bielema tried to play on that. Thank your standing up and saying enough is enough, we've moved on and will not let anyone else tarnish our good name.

Our last president said Ohio State was all orgies and rioting.  I'll take Gee's comments over that any day.  Karen Holbrook got booed at my convocation because she was awful to the students.  Gordon Gee regularly got standing Os at admitted student's days from parents and prospectives alike.  I like my President to be relatable, accessible, and generally good to the student body which is the most important thing.

Lol I dont have a problem with him telling BB to "Get a life". Its kinda funny! Although the "little sisters of the poor" comment was a little out of line. All in all he probably needs to watch what he says at times but I dont mind him saying little things like this. Congrats BB you've officially become rival #2!

Anybody watch NCIS, he's Ducky from NCIS. Both he and Ducky say some weird stuff at times but I see him as all about business for tOSU.  If you watch NCIS Ducky talks to the dead so what is wrong with Gee saying stuff to the living. We live in a PC world now and when somebody just quite doesn't follow along they are put out there in no-mans-land. For me it is halarious.  Go gettem Ducky, I mean Mr. Gee.

Completely agree with Awwwwwwop. At orientation this summer, getting to talk to President Gee was great, as he spoke with my orientation group this summer, while we were on our tour. Also at convocation he was constanly applauded. The guy is funny, down to earth, and relates to the students very well. There would be uproar from the student body if he were to be dismissed.

I saw the man twice out cheering marathon runners along the race route in 2008. Once near his house in Bexley (I think it's in Bexley), and once around campus three hours later.

The man's good people.

Bottom line, the university is moving up in the national rankings, The OSU hospital center is moving up in the national rankings, and he has stature and influence among his university president peers. Wexner just gave OSU $100 million, alumni are happy and giving money, he is a very visible presence on campus and OSU's biggest cheerleader, students love him, and he works well with the faculty. Does he have his quirks? Oh yeah. Does he say some things that would make any PR rep twitch? Yup. BFD.

The man raises money for the university like a mo-fo. The students love him too. At least they did when I went there. He has a passion for the school that you don't usually see from a university president. These are the things I care about. People worry about that he speaks a little too freely sometimes. I don't care. Every football fan in the country knows who my university president is. Can you name another?

Buckeyeneer, they still love him. They wave and call out to him to him when he is walking on campus. They clamor to have their picture taken with him. Go on any OSU fraternity or sorority website-they are bound to have a picture of Gee with a cluster of some of the fraternity/sorority members prominently displayed. He goes to events and students get excited that he is there. I think he is more popular now than he was when he was OSU president the first time, when I was there.
