The 2012 class recruiting cycle has me completely entertained. But after the Burrows commitment my interest's piqued about the class of 2013. I'm curious to hear about who the top players are, who we'd target, and more importantly, who would be considered Ohio St. leans.
My understanding is that Jalin Marshall is likely a Buckeye (sick jr year highlight reel) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PHIzZ-gVz0
I've also read about Dymonte Thomas and it'll be interesting to see if Brionte can sway the scUM commit.
What about guys like Robert Foster, Billy Price, Jaylon Smith, etc.?
Basically, does Alex or any reader have a decent grasp as to which uncommitted 2013 recruits can be considered Buckeye leans?
Thanks! Can't get enough of this site.

We will have a small class, but we can make it a great class with Urban at the helm. Burrows is the first, Marshall is expected to be the 2nd. Adam Breneman the #1 TE in the 2013 class and Jaylon Smith the #4 player nationally, #1 OLB and Laquon Treadwell (No Offer) have said they will attend Junior Day at Ohio State. Landing Adam and Jaylon would be HUGE for this small class of 15 or so. Eli Woodard is a matter of time in my eyes, would be a great start to this class.
Gonna provide a list, most of these guys might commit elsewhere so I'm broadening the horizon of choices I believe OSU will target. Can only have so few so hope they recruit really hard.
QB Malik Zaire & Darryl Richardson (Backup QB Jonathan McCrary)
RB Derrick Green & Ty Isaac (Backup RBs Ryan Green, Greg Bryant, & Keyante Green)
OL Logan Tuley-Tillman and Billy Price (Backup OLs Ethan Pocic, Derwin Gray & Jake Raulerson),
WR Shelton Gibson, Jordan Cunningham, Richard Benjamin & MarQuez North
TE Adam Breneman (Feb visit) & Wyatt Shallman
DL Henry Poggi, Tashawn Bower (Feb visit), Elijah Daniel & Joey Bosa
LB Jaylon Smith (Feb visit), E.J. Levenberry, Dorian O’Daniel, Daniel McMillian & Jon Reschke
DB & S Cameron Burrows (Committed), Eli Woodard (Buckeye lean), Caleb Day, Shaq Wiggins & Vernon Hargreaves III
ATH Jalin Marshall (Buckeye lean), Robert Foster, Michael Parker, Dymonte Thomas (Michigan commit and Bri'onte Dunn's Cousin)
I ran across this website here, it should give you and everyone a good idea who is out there and at the moment who has gotten verbal offers and who is targeted.
Are there any scat-back type prospects that we're targeting? A la Rainey or Demps?
Guys like Ty Isaac seem like downhill runners with limited breakaway speed but we gave him an offer. I'm curious to see how how Urban roadmaps his first full year of recruiting at tOSU.
Junior Day is Feb. 18th for Ohio State
Jaylon Smith is expected to be there according to Ari Wasserman
^^^ Per @AriWassermanBSB
I can't remember his name, but what about this legacy LB from Trotwood?
Mike McCray?
That's the one. Is he expected to get an offer despite all the LBs we may get in 2012 class? Seems to be a given w/ Urban wanting to nail down Trotwood pipeline
Yeah, I know what you are trying to say. Trotwood is loaded with talent in the 2013 class. I would love to see Urban nail it down, like you said. McCray would love to play for Ohio State, I know that much. He in my opinion if offered, wouldn't hesitate to take that offer from Urban. There is a whole nother year, so anything can happen. As of now, I believe Tennessee is the leader, but if Urban likes this kid and gives him an offer, he'll be wearing S&G no doubt about it.
It is hard to believe that McCray is 6'4", 230 and is considered an athlete. He must be a freak.
The one running back that we need is Derrick Green and possibly Aregeros Turner.
If we get both Marshall and Zaire. Do you think Smith plays the WR role and Zaire plays QB?
True, I'm hearing Jayme Thompson and Laquon Treadwell will be there. I dunno if there is any truth to that.
Why is Urban hesitating on offering McCray? Is it cuz of limited scholarships next year or is he not immediately as impressive as burrows on film?
Via Twitter it kinda looks like Cam and Jalin are building a friendship, both these guys will be good early pieces to help Urban recruit rest of class.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
Woodard seems like a lock to me. Maybe I'm just delusional ^_^
Malik Zaire was offered by Nebraska today and has already put it in his top 3 along with Ohio State and Pittsburgh. Check it out.
After taking a look at some of these prospects I gotta say, came away really impressed at Zaire's tape. He has a very live arm and seems to throw a good deep ball. He also has that elusiveness that Braxton has, even though he may not be as fast as him. I'd say he's a must-have considering our lack of depth at the qb position.
Robert Foster's tape also stood out to me. Seems like a freak athlete, sort of like Dorial Green Beckham. Taller and faster than anyone on the field.
I'm not too impressed by what I see from Isaac or Green (the two RB prospects). Both seem like down hill runners with little breakaway speed. Not sure that's what we need. I'm sure there are some Rainey-like prospects out there that we havent heard about but Meyer's already aware of. Curious if Jalin Marshall puts on some weight if he can become a scatback or whether he's destined to be a slot receiver.
By the way, take a look at Burrows's tape if you guys get a chance. He can turn his hips faster than any HS player i've seen. Very fundamentally sound player. Considering this is Howard's last year, wouldn't be surprised to see Cam Burrows challenge and win a starting job as a true freshman opposite of Roby.
GeneStarWind, no disrespect intended, just actually curious.....do you have a job? You are ALL OVER this board!!!! Appreciate you chipping in with sharing the info you come across......
Any reason why he's so into Nebraska? Hope he ends up a buckeye obviously
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
I would think he is into Nebraska because of what T. Martinez is done. I am sure they are selling the fact that Zaire is further along in passing mechanics and just overall development.
I really, really, really hope that Urban Meyer tries to pluck Tyrone Swoopes out of Texas. To my completely untrained eye, he looks to be better than Zaire. And Urban has had some luck getting recruits from Texas in the past based upon this article: http://ohiostate.scout.com/2/1136761.html
Link to Swoopes highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dNN_WZozQM
Lol Alex, naw it's all good but to answer your question I do. I'm just on my phone alot :D
Donovan Munger has been asked to take a visit
@buckeyefansonly: NC DT Greg Gilmore offered by #OhioState Class of 2013. Has 12 offers & is arguably top prospect in the Tar Heel State
But Taylor Martinez hasn't developed much in 2 years.
Add Bower to the visits for Junior Day

Somebody asked about scat backs, and Ryan Green is one who has been offered who would likely fit that mould.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ohiostate/football/recruiting/player-Ryan-Green-126010
Somebody talked about Taylor Martinez developing over the pas 2 years & that's what has intrigued Malik Zaire to show a lot of interested in them (by placing them into his top 3). First off, I don't think Martinez has done much at all personally. I gotta say, I would be very suprised if Malik ended up leaving the state of Ohio to play collegiate football. Alex or someone with a little more insight might see this differently, but I would think Coach Meyer & Coach Herman will really zero in on this young man as he's gonna be quite a talent. Anyone else who has some insight, please share!
Shendig
Interesting that an early UGA commit is even looking at the Buckeyes. I wouldn't bet against Urban here, as anything is possible. Somewhat surprising that he's even being looked at as a QB prospect for OSU though - I see him described mostly as a pro-style pocket passer.
If Urban really wants Malik Zaire, he will be a Buckeye
Malik is a GREAT kid though and would be a great addition to this class...I think he ends up IN along with another QB...either one from Ohio or one from OOS
@OSUatRivals
After Munger was asked to take a visit, he will come down to visit for the first Junior Day this Sunday. Maybe he'll get lucky and witness the Ohio State beatdown on Michigan :D
@OSUatRivals
Add Lovell Peterson to the list of names for this weekends 1st Junior Day. Right now he's a lean for Bama and OSU but has no offers yet from either school.
BTW, the kid has taken at least 4 unofficial visit to OSU so I would say he's more of a OSU lean than anything. Bama is his backup choice I'm guessing.
Lovell Peterson = Buckeye if/when offered
Would be a great addition to the team, could be better or just as good as Brewster.
I have been coming to this site for a couple of months now, never posted anything till today. Just wanted to say thank you to Alex for the great recruiting updates and to GSW for being on top of this also.
@MarcGivlerBG
@OSUatRivals
@KeithRivals
#ECU & #OhioState had coaches at Charlotte Mallard Creek today. Lot of talent in the 2013 class there (North, Walker, Lawshe, etc.)
OSU has already offered ATH MarQuez North 6-3/205/4.41
Price is a Defensive Tackle.......But plays OL in school now.....
I think that job question should be asked about yourself there Alex lol. I hope you love this recruiting stuff because you have been going above and beyond what any writer for a free blog should.
@BuckeyeinNYC, if we land Derrick Green we won't need a scat back type. Green isn't slow by any means, he runs hard, but the guy runs a 4.37 40, he's plenty fast.
I'm still confused why folks are so enamored with the scat back kids. Keep the downhill runners coming because that is when Urban Meyer's offenses are best. Speed at the slot and WR is necessary, but those big backs like Carlos Hyde, Rod Smith (if he holds on to the ball) and Brionte Dunn will be MONSTERS in this system. This is especially the case with an elusive QB such as Braxton.
I don't think it's any question that Urban is going to keep some of the bigger backs coming (like Derrick Green), but it's also no question he would love to have some speedy, versatile players. I'm sure we'll get a much better idea how Urban plans to use certain types of players in his Offense this Fall.
Speed on the edge is obviously a must, but that should be your slot/Harvin guy. I just think that the Marty Johnson type running back is even MORE important than speedy scatbacks for this offense if Herman runs any variation of the veer option with Braxton at QB. Derrick Green fits the bill as a HS player in my opinion. He could be a good one and I hope we go after him. UF's post Tebow running game was ineffective, in my opinion, without a downhill runner. After Tebow, all UF had for the most part were scat backs without a battering ram in the backfield and UF struggled to run the ball. Braxton is an awesome runner, but he is not best as a downhill guy. He is more like Alex Smith, hence the necessity for a Marty Johnson/Quinton Ganther type RB in my opinion.
Here are the 2013 RBs who have offers so far...
RB
Derrick Green: 5'11" 217 lbs; Hermitage HS, Richmond, Virginia (06/23/2011)
Keyante Green: 5'10" 189 lbs; Eagles Landing Christian Academy, McDonough, Georgia (06/24/2011)
Ty Isaac: 6'3" 205 lbs; Joliet Catholic, Joliet, Illinois (12/06/2011)
Greg Bryant: 5'11" 200 lbs; American Heritage School, Delray Beach, Florida (12/22/2011)
Ryan Green: 5'10" 195 lbs; St. Petersburg Catholic, St. Petersburg, Florida (01/09/2012)
@William the only way Derrick Green clocks a 4.37 40 is with rollerblades. He's a very talented back, but he's not a speedburner. He won't have the speed at the next level to break away from the safeties.
@IMMORT9888 respectfully disagree with you about what an Urban offense needs. If you look at his teams, he prefers the Rainey/Demps type of RB for that spread offense. The entire point of the spread is to create space by spreading out the defense. This creates a lot of 1 v. 1 matchups in the box. A speedy back is optimal b/c if he only has one man to beat him, and he does, he will have a large gain. But, this does not mean that it would not work with a larger back like Dunn/Green/Isaac. Just pointing out what usually works well with the spread, and what Urban's typically used.
Give me Green/Isaac and a scat/slot back and call it a day....
^^^^ agreed, Isaac has the frame to be potentially be similar to a tank.
@BuckeyeinNYC Derrick Green weighed nearly 270 lbs. his freshman year and ran a 5.2 40, he shed 50 lbs. of fat, bulked up and now routinely runs in the upper 4.30s around (4.37-4.39)
http://weblogs.dailypress.com/sports/college/accblog/2011/07/top_gun_cam...
Alex, that's basically what I was getting at. Why not have both? :-)
Both would be great, but I guess my point is...don't forget about the inside running game.
@BUCKEYEINNYC: Agree to respectfully disagree. I think the numbers indicate bigger plays and overall more effectiveness from Rainey and Demps with a good inside runner present. A great inside runner (Hyde is big and fast which means he could be REALLY good in this system), allows for bigger plays on the outside by the fast slot/scat backs. Case in point. See below Chris Rainey, Jeff Demps, and Tim Tebow's career rushing statistics. Other than Rainey's outlier year in 2010 with only 51 carries, the lack of a "good" inside rusher hampers the yards per carry and total TDs of the scat backs. Demps had longer runs after Tebow, but his numbers consistently went down after Tebow graduated. Maybe this is a product of better offensive line play in '08 and '09, but I think the talent was always present on the lines for the Gators. Urban talks about having speed on the "perimeter" which is key in the spread. Just as important, if not more, is to have the big back pounding away on the inside.
Chris Rainey rushing stats
2011 171 861 5.0 47 2
2010 51 366 7.2 51 2
2009 89 575 6.5 76 5
2008 84 652 7.8 75 4
Jeff Demps rushing stats
2011 98 569 5.8 84 6
2010 92 551 6.0 72 3
2009 99 745 7.5 62 7
2008 78 605 7.8 62 7
Tim Tebow rushing stats
2006 89 469 5.3 8 0
2007 210 895 4.3 23
2008 176 673 3.8 12
2009 217 910 4.2 14
Hey Alex I know we're not even done with the 2012 class yet but just wondering if you could post your mock 2013 class. Looks to be a great one.
Also, do you know who (besides Marshall) is announcing this Spring or who you think we'll get this Spring?
That will probably be an article in the near future Hayze........
I think Jalin Marshall, Eli Woodard, Billy Price, and maybe Caleb Day will all be Buckeyes by summer time....also think Mike McCray could be if offered but that may take some more time

A fun link for the preseason rankings next year
Um yeah, Urban's spread works just fine with speedy, quick, small, versatile running backs that can play the slot and running back. You have to have more than just one because just one will not be as effective (obviously), because when you have multiple (Fla with harvin, demps, rainey, and moody on the same team) you can keep them fresh and they can run as hard as they can on every play. The small backs can break tackles too that way cause they have enough legs and energy to run HARD. Ill take speed over size everyday of the week.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog
That's why I don't think it's the end of the world if we don't get Diggs or Neal. I think Urban can make due with Hall/Berry/Smith.
I though berry was gone? Hall is extremely quick but doesnt have breakaway speed. Smith is a big back. I think we need either Diggs or Neal. In a perfect world, both would be fantastic.
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog
Berry isn't gone yet. He'll probably stay because his issues were before Urban was there. Clarke/Gabrell happened while Urban was coach.
Well thats good, but I would still love to have Diggs and Neal
It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog
As would I, but I don't think it's the end of the world if it doesn't happen. I do think we'll get Neal though.
Did I just see we are targeting Courtney Love at LB in 2013? I know she's a tough broad and all, but can she run sideline to sideline?l
@Bucknuts1
Alquadin Muhammad has been offered by OSU
Ht: 6-4 | Wt: 230 | 40: 4.65
DE Ramsey, NJ Don Bosco Prep High School
What type of reciever is Robert Foster, bigger Blackmon/Aj Green or more of a speed guy like Harvin?
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
@BJMullens
Ht: 6-3 | Wt: 190 | 40: 4.49
He's a big kid.
Link here for his junior highlights
Robert Foster is definitely more like an AJ Green type than a Harvin. Seems to be faster than Green and not as physical, but still more of that ilk. Take a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HTotpj0Pz4
I think getting a big reciever like that would be really nice then, have all this speed around braxton in Urban's offense, and then when defense falls asleep on a deep big reciever with all the speed guys, just throw it up long to em.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
The next scat back may come out of the state of North Carolina in the form of TJ Logan. Fresh off of two state championships and over 35 touchdowns including 5 in the championship game this past season, T.J. could be the next Percy Harvin for Urban's spread offense. Rumor has it that he will be on campus this weekend and has a relationship with Withers for he was Carolina's #1 recruit in the class of 2013. Let's hope the buckeyes can close this one because the offers are aplenty!
OSU Charlie
Alex or anyone in the know:
What are Derrick Green's thoughts about Meyer and his offense? Are we still a heavy favorite to land him? Haven't really heard much since Meyer took over.
Derrick Green really likes Urban meyer and I thnik we are still the favorite to land him
Just spoke to DE Alquadin "Quan" Muhammad from Don Bosco in NJ.....story coming soon!
I know that people have been pretty sure that we are going to get Woodard, but check out his twitter page from the last week. If that doesn't say Buckeye, I don't know what would. Heck he could be a silent commit with all of those tweets and retweets.
https://twitter.com/#!/EliWoodard_9
Follow up on RBUBS, Jalin Marshall just made a twitter account like last week, hes currently following, besides I assume school friends and a few famous athelte, Pantoni, Zack Smith (who would most likely be his position coach), a luke fickell fan site, eli woodard, braxton miller and Cam Burrows........may be a few other 2013 osu leans/osu related twitters hes following I forgot too. In other words, this guy seems all buckeye like Alex has been telling us.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
Any news either from twitter or otherwise on the visits this weekend from the many 2013 recruits? Only thing I've read is that Robert Foster was a fan.
EDIT: check out @malikzaire6 <-- that's Malik's twitter account. Seems like someone was pretty impressed with the OSU visit this weekend. Also good to see him communicating with Robert Foster about how well the visit went. Honestly, at this point, it just seems like we get everyone we want in 2013. We're going to have 3-4 five star recruits, and i may be low-balling it!
