3. loss to Florida in NC game

5. any loss to Michigan

Mine is the loss to Florida in the BCS NC game.  Throwing the Butterfly Effect to the wind, I can only imagine how different things would have been.

I'm old enough to remember losing the 1976 Rose Bowl. That one hurt. The loss to Florida, because how badly we played was so inexplicable. And a game most wouldn't think of: the loss in the 1985 Rose Bowl, because it's the only one I ever attended in person.

I might vote for the losses to Michigan in 1995 and 1996. There was a lot of losing to TSUN during the Cooper years, but I think those were the only two games we lost as clear favorites; and it was then that I was really starting to wonder if they had our number permanently.

Biakabutuka is up there, 41-14 hurt badly, but 21-24 in the Fiesta to Texas followed by 18-15 the next season to USC was about as low as I have ever been as a Buckeye fan.  Those 2 losses snatched from the jaws of victory on a big time national stage made it feel like Buckeye Nation was just flat out cursed and would NEVER win a "big one" again.

It's also why the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl felt SO DAMN GOOD!!!!!!!!!

In order of most heartbreak:

1) scUM '96 (mostly b/c i still think we should've earned a share of the title that year... oh well)

2) Sparty '98 (most loaded OSU roster since i've been alive)

3) Gaytors '06 (our guys got fat and lazy b/c they thought they already beat the #2 team in the country, and the locker room was divided)

4) the way Tressel has been treated publicly

5) scUM '95

6) LSU '07

7) scUM '97 (i wanted to shoot Stanley Jackson and Charles Woodson after that game)

8) Wisky '03 (ended the long winning streak, and dashed hopes of a repeat)

9) Texas '05 (two words: Ryan Hamby)

10) USC '09 (Tresselball lost us that game)

In case you couldn't tell, I've thought about these a few times in my life.

Forgot about the 63-13 loss to StatePenn, in 1994, OSU went 9-4 that year..  PSU, definitely got robbed of a NC share that year.  I think PSU's kitty kat growl noise maker was broken from over use in that game against OSU.

For me it's probably the 2006 and 2007 BCS Championship game losses.

2006 - We had one of the best offenses in the nation that year. Ted Ginn, Anthony Gonzalez, Troy Smith, Pittman, Beanie, and a (what we thought at the time) superb defense. The playcalling up until the MNC game was phenomanal. We had trick plays, we knew how to fake opposing defenses, etc. When Ginn returned that opening kickoff, so much anxiety and nerves just evaporated from me, I felt like we could win (I was nervous leading up to the game for whatever reason) Obviously everything came crashing down later on that evening.

2007 - I was surprised to be in this game after losing to Illinois. I was jumping up and down with my friends and family the night that Arkansas upset LSU in the last week of the regular season in TRIPLE overtime giving the Buckeyes the nod into the game. When I learned of us playing LSU, I was upset, but hoped we had learned from the previous year. Going into that game was a hopeful feeling of "We've already lost this year, we don't want to feel like that again" and "We learned from last year aganist Florida, we can do it this time". I've said a couple of times that Beanie Wells is my favorite Buckeye, and that 1st half was magical.

First, breaking the game wide open and outrunning the "SEC Speed" secondary for a 65 yard TD. Then the stiff arm of a lifetime to All-American safety Chevis Jackson. Not to mention Todd Boeckman, who was throwing it around very well for the most part. Brandon Saine on that wheel-route = YES. We went up 10-0, and had LSU scared, without a doubt. Fumbled snaps by them, a couple of miscues, and Ohio State ball leading 10-0, I was feeling mighty confident. Then all of a sudden, the tables turned, and LSU blocked a FG that would have made it 13-0. Soon after it was 10-10. LSU had all the momentum when Ohio State finally put another drive. Then came the drop. Brian Robiskie, dropping the BEATUFIUL pass from Todd in the endzone.

After that it seemed LSU rolled with ease. The second half was horrific. Literally looked like a murder scene after the defensive line got through with OSU's linemen. They battered Boeckman too many times to count. Seemed like we abandoned the running game again, and then an interception intended for then #4 Ray Small. The straw that broke the back was when Ohio State was starting to build a comeback and was ready to get the ball back after FINALLY stopping LSU's offense when the unthinkable happened: Roughing the kicker/punter. At that point I knew there wasn't much hope for this game. It ended 38-24, and the Buckeyes from that point on were "overrated, slow, not well coached, can't win big games, etc."

By far the worst time in my life as a Buckeye fan, and salt would add to the wound when we lost 2 straight times to USC and then lost to Texas in the Fiesta bowl. Finally it would end with Oregon, but those were dark days indeed.

This is not in the list of selections but is a general that powers past any:

Cooper's mantra of "Just another game."

- As a young kid, it drove me absolutely crazy. Made me cringe always. Yearned for the person that didn't dismiss the rivalry as just the last game. Couldn't stand it then & still can't stand it now.

Staying with the list:

- Mr. Clarrett, for sure with me. While he would probaly say that his time shook him & led to the valuable man he is today, those things I wish didn't happen. I have great respect for who he is now. He is probably in the low percentage of person(s) who will not be part of the recitivism rate.

2006 BCS Championship game.  I was there, and got a ticket for face value.  Had great seats, had my pic taken with Archie Griffin (it's my profile pic here, BTW), and I thought I was going to witness a coronation.

To this day, and until the day I die, I will never understand how thoroughly whipped OSU was.  They were an all time great team, with an all time great offense and defense, and a hall of fame coach, and they just got outplayed and outcoached in every facet of the game.

I know Florida was good, and they won hands down, and I could have even stomached losing, but to get whipped like that is something I don't think I'll ever really get over.

1. Has to be the the 07 championship game against Florida. To play the way they had all season, and then lay an egg like like that made it feel so much worse. I kept waiting for that team to show up after half time. I actually believe if they had won that might have been considered the best Buckeye team ever.

I remember it felt like someone had died the next morning. Listening to the reaction and other peoples thoughts on the morning Zoo helped me laugh it off.

2. The way Tressel has been treated the last 10 or so months by ESPiN, Yahoo, and other media outlets. I get that it was wrong to lie, but they treated him like he was the offender ever.Tressel did alot for Ohio State, and the community, and to listen to that was unbearable. What makes it worse is that alot of the "outrage" sounded so fake.

3. The 2008 NC. Dumb mistakes cost them that game. My brother and I talk about how Tressel would be viewed if he had won against Florida and LSU. He might have been put above Woody.

4. Losses to Michigan in 93, 95-97, and 03. After the 2003 game I wanted to smack this kid I saw at Schottensteins with a Michigan coat on. I realized then I took things too serious.

If Coopers only two wins against Michigan had been the 1995, and 1996 games, he'd be viewed alot differently.

5. The two losses to USC, and Texas. The 2008 loss to USC was bad because of the perceived idea that Ohio State wasn't good enough to hang with the big boys. That 2009 game against USC sucked because they should have blown them out.

6. Losing to Penn State in 2008. Pryor was just inches away from getting around the pile and basically ending the game when the ball was poked out.

7. What could have been this season without the tat situation. They'd definitely be in the NC if not for that.

8. Half way through the 3rd quarter of the Nebraska. Miller goes out, and the rest is eye bleeding history.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

I'd base this list on how long the hangover effect lasted. How long I was unjustifiably angry at my family and friends simply because I didn't like what happened to my Buckeyes.

1. 98 MSU. Ouch. I guess Cooper was just bound to loose to a team from Michigan in any given year.

2. 2006, 2007 & 2008. Wtf? Are ever going to win when it counts again?

3. 1978 - Woody slugs a guy from Clemson. I was 7 - and I was devastated. This would be number one, but like I said - I was seven...

4. Tat 5. Flipping to ESPN & watching Mark May proclaim that this was the basically the worst, most corrupt thing to ever happen in college football and off with their heads to everyone at tOSU. What the hell is wrong with that guy? He has a real vendetta.

5. Purdue...2009 & 2011. Still can't decide which one was more painful. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned these losses. I was thoroughly convinced that we were coming back to win the B1G this year after the showing at Nebraska and the Wisconsin win. The extra point is blocked and my heart gets broken. Again.

I gotta go with Texas 05, I was so pissed about that game because we beat the crap out of Vince Young, On top of the loss I had to deal with all my Marine Corps buddies razzing me for weeks.  41-14 hurt bad, but it lasted so long i kinda went numb in the 2nd quarter when i knew it was over. The ultimate high was Ted Ginn returning the opening kickoff. Hester did the same thing for the Bears in the the superbowl against Indy. I bet that never happens in the same year again.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

Top 5 -

1) a $1,000 ticket to get our @ss beat by FL in NC game.

2) MSU upset us in '98 (ie. best team imo we ever had, in my lifetime).

3) The tie to IU (Cooper era).

4) Tat Gate

5) Getting our butts handed to us by South Carolina in bowl game

disclaimer - not old enough to remember the Woody punch, so didn't list it, but that is the obvious #1 in any case.

1. NC game loss to Florida.

2. Loss to UCLA in the 1976 Rose Bowl. OSU ranked #1 and coming off a dramatic victory over Michigan, playing a team they whipped in L.A. earlier in the season. I'll never get over that one.

3. 1993 loss to Michigan. Losing a close one to a good team is one thing, but getting shut out 28-0 against an inferior team when you're undefeated and cruising towards a possible national championship is inexcusable.

4. 1996 loss to Michigan. Same situation as 1993, only this one is at home and the inferior team is REALLY inferior. Inexcusable doesn't even cover it.

5. 1998 loss to MSU. Again, playing at home against an inferior team whilst ranked #1 and cruising towards a MNC in the first year of the BCS, they let a 24-9 lead go to waste and lose 28-24. Absolutely inexcusable.

===========================

"To this day, and until the day I die, I will never understand how thoroughly whipped OSU was..."

Heard this from folks inside after that game the O-line ... Boone, Rehring, etc. got drunk even the night before the NC game and were hungover and gassed.  Recall Boone getting arrested years later and getting tased by the cops in CA on a drunken rampage jumping on the hood of the car... Rehring getting arrested for involvement in some drug distribution bullshit a few years later... These guys had substance abuse problems big time... Partied constantly after the Mishitgin game.  Troy Smith was hooking up with a certain receivers girlfriend (not naming the receiver because he is an outstanding person and Buckeye) and got caught - by that receiver who was until that point still a boyfriend and teammate... Team unity and dissension and entitlement were no match for Urban on a mission.  I never understood it either until I learned about this shit... More selfish horseshit player behavior is what cost us this game.  We were not prepared to prepare to win.  Period.

What a surprise - Fast forward to the Tat 5 - selfish behavior cost us again...

I don't know what order I would place them in, but the games most stuck in my memory that I would like to get rid of:

1) 41-14. I was there for that... my first bowl game. I was devastated for a week. First time I ever saw the Buckeyes lose in person.

2) 2008 USC game - again I was there for that. My wife got me tickets as a birthday present. Second ever OSU game for her (first being 41-14). The aftermath of the USC game was a nightmare... a lot of punks there and people trying to start fights with us, throwing bottles at me and my wife. Two a-holes tried to run us over with their car. My wife also got really mad that we were spending thousands on tickets to watch us get blown out. She attempted to ban me from ever going to a bowl or major game again.

3) 1998 Michigan State - I was living in Belize at the time and doing my best to follow what was going on. I knew it was one of our best teams ever, and really had high hopes like everyone else. When I found out about the loss I sat on a dock over the New River Lagoon for several hours just kinda stunned.

I was born in the early eighties so I will limit my memories to personal experience.

1- 2007 BCS National Championship - Worst feeling I've ever had.  Still think about that game to this day and how big of a disapointment it was.  I thought it was supposed to be a coronation and what I felt was destiny for the 2006 team.

2- 2009 Fiesta Bowl - After being hammered for nearly 3 years about not being fast enough to compete with the best teams in the country we had arguably the second or third best team that season beaten and let them off the hook.  Had to endure another year of hearing how Ohio State couldn't compete at the top level anymore and one of the best senior classes went out with an L.

3- Jim Tressel getting destroyed by the national media.

4- 2005 Texas Loss - The best team of the Tressel Era.  Less painful than the 2009 loss to Texas but not by much.

5 - 1996 Loss to Michigan

Honorable Mention - 1998 MSU, 2008 USC, 2009 USC, 2003 Michigan

I'll go off the beaten path a litte-When Robby Reynolds choked that QB at Wisconsin. I was beyond ashamed to be an OSU fan that day. That's the sort of thing that people say 'happens all the time' and of course that doesn't make that right either. That was a blatant cheap shot from a team that does not play that way. Worse it got caught clear as day but that is the kind of thing that should not happen. Losses don't really make me feel that bad-even the bad ones against Florida or USC or Texas-games are played and there is a winner and a loser. How Reynolds conducted himself on the field and how he represeneted OSU made me feel worse than any loss has or will. Plus-he had a face you just wanted to punch anyway.

The Disaster in the Desert.  I don't know how anything else compares.  Out of all the research I've done on Ohio State, it has the be the most embarrassing moment in Ohio State history, as well as Big Ten history.  No other moment maybe in all of college football has been so damning to a school's reputation, and subsequently the reputation of its conference, than that one game did for Ohio State and the Big Ten.

I understand 98 MSU was painful.  It was a little before my time.  69 Michigan was way before my time.  But 41-14 is something I'll never get over.  Never.  It's the most inexplicable game I've ever seen.  I've never heard an explanation from Tressel or any of those players that satisfied my disbelief.
