Is anyone else worried about the ramifications of Luke going to Pitt? He has a rep for being a great recruiter; also would he pull any of our current commits with him?
PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE

Though I supported Fickell and supported the Urban hiring, and I find this a highly unlikely scenario, the news about Fickell possibly going to Pitt suddenly gave me nightmares about Fickell being successfull there and bringing Pitt back from obscurity, while the Urban hire doesn't work out and we slide. THAT would be some ugly irony.
I think Luke stays a Buckeye for this next year, maybe longer. If I was in his shoes, I'd stay to see how long Urbin coaches the Buckeyes. He might be able to have the best of all worlds in 4 or 5 years as the next OSU Head coach.
I agree that I would like him to stay and wait on Urban, but it seems that he is not turning it down; rather, waiting on an offer.

I am concerned. The impact that it could have on what is shaping up to be a tremendous recruiting class with he and Vrabel gone (I assume he would follow) could be significant.
vacuuming sucks
Seems like the perfect opportunity for him.
Luke did a great job this year keeping things together and I give him all the credit in the world for that. But from a coaching perspective? He clearly, without a doubt, isn't ready to be running the show.
His battle with proper usage of timeouts/ general game management was a weekly issue for most of the season. A football head coach at the top level of college football should grasp schemes and concepts effectively to the extent that they can influence the direction and flow of the game. The Illinois game is all you need to look at to see that Luke isn't quite ready for the responsibility, and honestly, I don't know if he ever will be. 4 Passing attempts total?? Evidence supports that he was not able to adapt to situations on the field.
There are numerous coaches who make great coordinators, and yet never transition well to the head coaching role. College football history is full to the brim of such examples, and I think Luke falls into that category. This isn't meant to take anything away from Luke as a coach, because he's a good coordinator and a great recruiter, but I don't think the head coach mantle is cut out for him, at Pitt or at OSU in the futrure, and even though his "dream" may be to be a head coach, I think (hope) he realizes that.

If he goes and takes Vrabel with him I wish them both the best, but this does given Urban an opportunity to get more of the type of coaches he wants. The man is building a machine to beat the SEC and he needs all the best coaches he can get.
@thirdleglouie while I agree with many of your thoughts, I think the same argument could have been made about Jim Tressel after his first year at YSU (they went 2-9). I bet there were many who thought JT was "in over his head" after that one year and he grew into an all time great. One year with a staff that he didn't pick (as well as the many other circumstances) doesn't mean that he will never be a good/great one.
Good point about Vrabel Maestro. I did not see anything about his coaching this year to be impressed, but his resume tells me he has to know a few good things. And what kid would not be impressed.
In response to thirdlegLouie: it would seem tough to judge Fickell on his coaching this year with Tressel's staff. I am thrilled to have Urban, but the point of this post was to better understand the impact of Fickell's possible departure. Great points being made.
I'd be worried if I thought he was irreplaceable, but I don't and he isn't.
I think he'd be crazy not to take the job if offered: it's a head coaching job in a BCS conference; a place where it's been shown you can win big; main in-state rival in utter disarray; close proximity to the recruiting haunts he already knows. And if Urban proves to be a short-timer here, the Buckeye job will always be there for Fickell should he be a success with the Panthers.

@Faux_Maestor---
Another point about Luke not being ready: I don't think this is like Tressel in his first year at YSU when he went (2-9). Tressell had YSU talent and Luke had OSU talent this year. HUGE difference. Ohio State has only had 1 season in the past 100+ years in which it has lost 7 games. If OSU loses the bowl game, that'll be unlucky number 7 for Luke, making the 2nd time IN ONE HUNDRED YEARS. Not exactly a resume builder...
