Resizing Pics

As Denny constantly reinforces, I am not so good at using a spell check nor am I proficient at the use of the English language. Without a shadow of uncertainty, I expect some comment to appear in the comments section about how I did something wrong, yet again. In an effort to improve myself and to better use this site, I would ask for helpful information from the staff or anyone in the community that is knowledgeable in this area. If I have a specific picture that I want to link into the thread, how do I resize that picture so that it does not extend beyond the borders of the post? I can link pictures and then where it says width and height I usually make adjustments and it looks good until I preview them, then it returns to the original size. Can anyone instruct me on the proper method to accomplish posting the edited picture?

I think there is a bug for picture sizing in the CMS that runs this blog. I'm a web developer, so I know what I am doing, but I can't get resizes to stick either.

I don't know either...there is a tool to adjust it when you upload it, but it never seems to shrink it down eonugh.

I was just about to post something like this. There is definitely something wrong with the image posting tool. It doesn't seem to resize at all.

Nappy's picture
Nappy Mod on 15 Dec 2011 - 2:37pm #

Once you upload the photo you want to post, the width and height listed is in pixles. Adjust width to something near 250.  I've noticed sometimes even after adjusting the size the post is bigger than expected although the preview looked fine.  Like LA said, gotta be a bug somewhere.

Interested in hearing from the Elevenwarriors staff on the matter....You guys aware of the issue?

If you set the height/width correctly the first time before you insert the image, it will appear correctly at whatever resized dimensions you have chosen.

If you post something that's too large and then go back and attempt to edit and resize it, then yes, there's a bug of sorts that keeps the image at its original size. At this point, if you want to resize it, you must specify the height and width HTML attributes for the image.

So, you would have something like this:

<img src="x.jpg" style="height: 300px; width: 800px;" />

And you would need to change it to this (in the source view):

<img src="x.jpg" height="150" width="400" />

Again, that's only if you fail to size it correctly the first time you insert it. If you nail it on the first attempt, you're golden.

So the way that I'm reading your tip Jason is that we put the width attribute in the overlay editor before pasting the image source code - that, or we need to edit the image on our own in Preview/Photoshop.

Most of the images that I link to (and I think most people link to) are from around the web - so do we first enter the desired width and then the URL link?

It resizes nicely. Does everything I tell it to. Then I post it and shows up in normal/original size. I edit it and go to source to make the adjustments and it is listed as the size I intended but not showing up as the size intend.

Just make sure you get the dimensions right before you insert the image into your comment/blog post/whatever. If you take an image from the web instead of uploading it, when you paste the URL in, the height and width will automatically be filled in for the image.

When this happens, just ensure your width is < 550 or so and you're good. That's really the easiest way to do it.

Irricoir's picture
Irricoir on 15 Dec 2011 - 5:49pm #

Doing it and it is not working Jason. I am changing everything. I put the width in and the height and it looks perfect on the screen. Then I hit preview and BLAM, I am looking at 1700x1000 and every cute blemish on Charlize Therons face.

I tried to HTML resize this (reduced dimensions to 10% or ~ 550 wide) and it didn't work once I previewed. It looked fine in the webview editor though, like Irricoir is saying he's seeing as well. Not sure linking to large external images is gonna work, you guys.

But I just put in that same external URL Denny and put in a width of 550, hit okay, and hit publish and it worked fine.

The image of Al above was a test that worked for me. Original size, 700px wide, now 400.

Step 1: Paste URL of image into popup

Step 2: Wait until height/width properties are filled, then ensure lock icon is locked and change width to under 550 or so (note: this width gradually decreases as comments are nested)

Step 3: Click okay

Try it with this one: http://www.pilgrimsop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/deadwood-al-toasts.jpeg

What Luke said. That source image was 5500px wide, which even resized here is way too big from a bandwidth perspective.

Denny's picture
Denny on 15 Dec 2011 - 6:07pm #

Not working - maybe something with user v. author settings?

HTML below, from the source code, which subsequently changes to the original sizing when I hit 'preview' or 'save':

[p] [img alt="" src=http://www.pilgrimsop.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/deadwood-al-toasts.jpeg style="width: 200px; height: 139px" /] [/p]

This is how I've always tried to do it and it still doesn't work. That's when one of you guys steps in to save the day and resize it with ease.

HAHA. I love this thread. I really hope we get more expert photoshoppers and such around here so we can have cool image post threads and meme's generated, etc. I really want to learn more about html, embedding videos, anchoring links, photoshoping, etc. so I can contribute funny cool pictures and mash-ups.

I would tell you but then a whole slew of steroid/growth hormone comments would enter this thread and the only thing I can do is pull a Mark Mcgwire (Spelling?), deny, deny, deny. As we have seen with the media people will believe whatever they perceive or what ESPN tells them to. I bench enough and physical fitness is important to me. I haven't talked much about my job but I can tell you a tad. I train professionals in defensive tactics among other things so I have to remain at the top of my game.

I was just being sarcastic, I don't really care what you bench to be honest, but judging by your physique I'd say you could put up at least 315 a few times.

That's a pretty interesting job bro, I'm sure its exciting.

LABuckeye's picture
LABuckeye on 16 Dec 2011 - 5:26pm #

I believe they are using Drupal (a content management system) for this site. What that means is it is a bug in Drupal, which the 11W folks likely can't fix unless one of them is a PHP wizard and wants to dig into the CMS' code. It will probably have to wait until the bug gets fixed by the project's maintainers.
