My chief worry...

Is that when we hire a permanent head coach either following the Michigan game or whatever Bowl game we squeek into, what will happen to the defensive staff?

I think we can all agree on our pure hatred for Jim Bollman, and I don't think anyone here has much love for Siciliano or even Tressel's brother.  However, it would but a huge shame to lose quality coaches who've proven season in and season out that they can field one of the best defensive units in college football on a CONSISTENT basis.  Heacock is a great D-coordinator, Stan Drayton is an exciting recent hire from both a recruiting and coaching standpoint, and Vrabel similarly adds a huge recruiting focus to our defensive staff.  Fickel has an intensity that I, as a former linebacker in high school and at a small D3 college, respect and admire.

Would it be unprecedented for the powers that be to sack the offensive staff but keep the defensive guys when making head coach hires this winter/spring?  Also, is it pure fantasy to believe that Fickel stays on the staff as something other than Head Coach?  It would be tough to swallow because it would be a clear demotion, but I love him and I don't want to see him and Vrabel walk away from the program to go coach at Akron or something.

I would love if what you say could come true.  But for this to happen, Fickell needs to do it.  An interim head coach cleaning house of the guys he was once inferior to?  Not likely.  I think we should give Fickell another year if he is aggressive enough to make this move - he hasn't shown that he would do this though, he's rather indecisive thus far.
