Braxton is the new Tyrod Taylor

Just projected Miller's stats for 11 games and compared them to Taylor's from his Freshman year (he appeared in 11 games as a frosh).

Taylor as a freshman rushed for 429 yards on 102 carries.  He passed for 927 yards and 5 TD's on 134 attempts.

Projected Miller numbers as a freshman : 531 yards rushing on 110 carries and 862 yards passing 11 TD's on 106 attempts.

Of course Miller's passing attempts should increase from the average of 9.5 per game that he has so far in his 3 appearances, but probably not by a ton.  I can see an average of about 15 attempts from here on out.

Watching the two of them on film the similarities are impossible to ignore.

Interesting. Do you think that Miller is a better runner than Taylor?

I don't remember Tyrod being as nimble as Brax. Braxton has the closet to Barry Sanders like moves I have seen from anybody in a long time. Wish he had the body to take the abuse like Barry did. Then again, he wouldn't likely be playing QB would he. Jamarcus Russel didn't have the body either.

I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.

I think Miller might be a bit more explosive, but if you watch Taylor highlights their running styles are very similar.

To me that's a bit concerning due to just how abysmal Taylor was as a passer until really his senior year.

They do have similar running styles, I'm not sure how I would compare them though

Thank you! I've been saying that comparison for a while now and haven't heard anyone mention it.

Same #5
Similar size/build
Similar playing styles
Both slippery/ explosive runners with more shake ability than long stride straight speed (pryor, young)

Similarities are definitely there. Unfortunately it's going to be a tough October, so we'll see how safe they play him.  He'll definitely get to hone his passing as long as he can survive till November.

From everything I've heard, though we have yet to see it in very short time, there aren't many passes Braxton can't make.  Let's let him settle in and find his stride.  TP wasn't a great passer but he still was one of the best QB's in Ohio State history.  If Braxton finds his groove in the passing game this season or heading into next season, there may not be a comparison for him.  We may be saying in 5 years, that guy is the next Braxton Miller.

I don't know about that. I think he'll be a greàt player. But I don't see him being a once in a decade type player or anything.

Being compared to Tyrod Taylor is Troy Smith is good enough. I think that's the limit to his ceiling. Just my opinion.

Taylor never had a season that he completed 60% of his passes. Sure hope Brax can do better than that, but I'll take the 2,000 yards rushing and 23 rushing TD's that Taylor compiled over his career at VT.

I hope not. Having lived in ACC country, I watched Taylor play quite often, he wasn't a good passer till his senior year. Miller is also a bit more explosive as a runner.

I'm just saying, the guy is clearly talented.  He isn't the mechanical mess that TP was throwing the ball and he can run well.  We have no way to measure what kind of leader he is yet because it's such a small sample size, but EVERYONE talks about how mature the kid is and how he doesn't get frazzled easily.   There's no telling how good he could be at this point.  If TP could be a once in a decade type talent, despite being a mediocre passer, and despite how horrible a leader everyone seemed to think he was( I personally didn't buy it) who is to say that Braxton doesn't surpass his success.

To me if Braxton is as good as TP or Troy or somewhere in between, he's going to be a great Ohio State QB.

I agree, but its all important what's around Braxton as well..if he doesn't have solid recievers, O-line blocking well for him, and a good coaching scheme built for his talents, than his potential could be ruined.

Sure, look I don't expect him to be a Heisman winner this year or anything, but with a great young receivers like Smith and Brown, and a stable of great young RB's, and some great TE talent as well, he's going to have a lot of weapons for the next couple of years to work with.  I just can't say the guy is the same as or will be better than some other guy some other place all together based off of 1 start.

Doesn't it seem like it's a little early for us to compare Braxton to anyone? I mean, he has 1 career start at OSU. How can you compare that to anything? The sample size for Miller is just too low. After a season, maybe we can analyze this further.

I completely agree wtih you BTWrestle04 - we can't talk too much about his ceiling or floor until we see him play more. Additionally, players' growth trajectories are not linear - we just can't say where a guy will be in 2-3 years very easily. Certiain variables can change more throughout a player's career - decision making, strength, accuracy, reading defenses, confidence, leadership (to some degree), and others don't change as much, like throwing mechanics, ability to run the ball, etc.

On those variables that don't change as much, I think Braxton looks good, based on one game. But again, we need a larger sample size. I don't think comparing him to Taylor is bad though- it definitely gives us an archetype for us to compare Brax against as we watch him play more.

BIA, that is all I am saying.  He looks almost exactly like Taylor on the field.  Just from a looks standpoint.  Both very shifty.  Both have a very upright stance when throwing.  Both #5.  They just look the same and are very comparable in that regard IMHO.  That is all.

Maestro, just to clarify - I definitely wasn't intending to contradict you. I agree that they have many similarities. It'd be nice if Brax continues to look more and more like senior-year Taylor!

Well, through 6 games played now (remember he didn't play against Toledo) here are Miller's stats

243 yards rushing on 61 attempts and 403 yards passing on 51 attempts with 5 TD's.

So Miller's pass attempts per game have actually decreased to roughly 8.5 per game.

Projections for 11 games now sit at....112 rushes for 445 yards and 94 passing attempts for 739 yards passing and 9 TD passes.

I wish they would have just played him more against the soft part of the schedule.  Bubonic Joe gave false hope against Akron costing Miller vaulable time to learn.
