What will OSU's sanctions be?

I originally thought just schollys reduced and wins vacated but starting to think the NCAA might send a message. Media pressure is high and many are calling this worse than USC although I disagree as the school was at the forefront across multiple sports in that case. Also OSU self reported and is cooperative unlike Troy. Either way the more that comes out the worse. If trial was today I think worst we get is a 1 year bowl ban, vacated wins, and scholarship reductions. What do you think the sanctions will be?

Post season ban for 2 years.  Vacated wins from possibly the past 3 seasons.

vacuuming sucks

Maestro - as ever - offers sage commentary.

It may be easy to fear the worst - as policy - but new and unsavory pages are written into this story, every week - if not every couple of days.

While it is reasonable to credit Ohio State for having been more aggressively-cooperative with the NCAA than USC and - therefore - presume, this will earn Ohio State some favor...it's equally reasonable to presume the NCAA, will stick it to Ohio State, because of public pressure, to do so.

Remember, not just weeks ago, were we sobering ourselves with the possibility of the forfeiture of the 2010 regular season.

Given Pryor's transgressions, Maestro's opinion is a looming probability.

If the new allegations are not proved, I think we skate with a 1 year post season ban, maybe loss of 20 or so schollys over a few years and a vacated 2010. Other than that it's just a crap shoot.

Anyone else notice that the national media message boards seem to be calming down a bit? Seems like more people are starting to blame the system.

If all the information stays they same, I think the team loses 1 bowl game, the 2010 season wins will be vacated, and I think the Tat 5 gets a longer suspension.  They lost 5 games for the improper benefits, but the fact the Tressel knew they were inelligible and played them the entire season may come back on each of them as well.  There could be a scholarship reduction as well.

If more info comes out that can be confirmed then it could get really ugly.

RBUCK, this may be more of a case that many people are starting to understand that this could happen to any school.  Short of Pryor, all other incidents are the kind that could and do pop up anywhere.  Does anyone really want to face the predicted doom and gloom of maestro for their school? (I presume he is forecasting vacating wins for the last 3 seasons because that goes back to the original offense by the players.  However, they would have to be evidence of OSU's knowledge of the situation from then - with all that has been reported there is no hard evidence of that.)

And this could happen to a school that for the most part cooperated with the NCAA.  There are more schools out there that don't even come close to this kind of cooperation.  I know I am a glass half full guy, but this is a chance for the NCAA to say "This is what happens when you cooperate, USC is an example of what happens when you don't."  We also don't have pompous Mike Garret running around saying that everyone is just jealous of us, and we are not trying to replace Tressel with another coach that is under investigation for deeds more sinister.  I just don't see this being the doom and gloom that some are forecasting, although I do expect that penalties will be severe. And, if they are as severe as USC's there is absolutely no reason for any school to cooperate with NCAA investigations.

Part of my answer is jaded by the fact that where I spend most of my time on-line everyone is screaming from the hilltops that it SIMPLY HAS TO BE WORSE than the USC punishment.

I beg to differ strongly, but the more things that come out the more I fear that there is some creedence to their screams.

My thoughts have evolved from thinking that the punishment would be isolated to Tressel to what I mentioned above.

What gets the attention of a program? Post season bans and tv limitations.  I am getting the feeling more and more that the NCAA is going to want this to get some peoples' attention.

I just don't see why there would be scholarship reductions, but that would obviously hurt badly as well.

Maestro, While I realize most of the online bloggers are screaming for the hammer I kind of recognize that for the most part bloggers in general are a bit on the gloomy side of things, and that is a misunderstatement.  One good example is that when it was suggested by a Texas paper that Tressel will still end up in the hall of fame they stated that "afterall, Berry Switzer is in there."  That brought out the negative OK nellies who said Switzer was a saint compared to Tressel.  Meanwhile, Switzer is laughing at this whole mess saying that what Tressel is guilty of is like jaywalking compared to what happened when he was coaching.  I guess my point is that the NCAA is made up of, and answers to, member institutions.  They have no allegiance to the general public.  I think they know they have a responsiblity to come down hard on OSU, but the negative bloggers or sports writers really do not have that much influence.  Afterall, there were a lot of people clammoring for the death penalty for USC, and the sanctions did not even come close to that.   True Emmert is a new President, and he wants to be aggressive in dealing with matters, but he does not sit on the infractions committee.  As much as OSU has to live with the sanctions, so will Emmert.  And, I am not hiding my head in the sand - we will get hit hard - it will not be as light as the ones in denial wish for, nor will it be as harsh as the ones without forgiveness in their hearts are calling for.

Yeah, the Iowa thing is interesting.  While I am offended by what Tressel did, and recognize that he needed to resign, I would have been demanding his resignation if OSU had the problem of just about killing a dozen or so kids in workouts while the coach was out recruiting.  The whole memorabalia thing is disgusting, but putting kids lives in danger?  I guess my coaching background dictates a different set of standards than your ordinary fan.

You guys don't get it, it's ok to nearly kill a fifth of your team in workouts (Iowa), have a guy get arrested for drunk Driving (Notre Dame) or a student video coordinator get killed (Notre Dame), or have players who rob trailer parks at gun point (Auburn) but once you violate NCAA laws, suddenly you deserve the death penalty and are a dirty program.

I'm not going to deny that Ohio State screwed up, or that we're better than anyone. OSU obviously royally f*cked up, but last time I checked, at least in a sound society the death of a student, or acual crimes are worse than the violating of by-laws for a collegiate athletics group.

I'm hoping for a wrist slap followed by the media hacks crying blood tears on national television. I also wouldn't mind if it involved Tom Deinhart, Mark May, Pat Forde and Mark Schlabach jumping off a cliff.

OK, I just watched ESPN's 30 for 30 on SMU again, and anyone that thinks what OSU did is even CLOSE to what SMU did is a moron. This whole "death penalty" convo is one of the most moronic things ever.
