One of the most exhilarating feelings is the start of a new football season. Every team starts the season undefeated. The crystal football is there for every team to grab. Expectations are high and anticipation is higher. Many fans dream of the possibilities of calling this year, "Their Year."
Is that realistic? Is it realistic to return for your senior season for the sole possibility of winning a national championship, being that one team out of the 100+ teams in Division One football? I don't know and don't want to influence that dream in one direction or the other for anyone that cares to read this post.
What I take great enjoyment in is the fact that we always have a lot of young talent each year, that surprises us. I look forward to seeing the guys that were recruited with a lot of hype. It's interesting to see which players live up to the hype and which players don't. Which players are unfairly hyped to the level that they can never measure up? What is great about next year, is that we have the opportunity to see a lot of young talent during games that should be winnable with low risk. The stakes are higher against Miami and Colorado, whom are both traditionally, though not recently, powerful schools. When playing at their best they can give any team fits. Miami with their speed and Colorado with their...well they did beat Georgia in 2010.
This year we had several players step up and I was curious about the view point of the readers. Which young players do you think showed the most promise this year and which players are you most excited about next year? Tell me why.
This year I was most excited about C.J. Barnett before he received that season ending injury. I had little to gage his potential on but from what I saw in him he looked like his ceiling was unreachable. If I had to chose a player that played the entire year, I would say that Corey Brown and Travis Howard both filled in admirably. Both players had games where they demonstrated their abilities brilliantly, and both had games that showed they were young and had room for improvement.
Corey Brown: 8 Receptions for 105 yards and showed great hands on some pivotal plays but also had the dropsies in one contest this year.
Travis Howard: 13 tackles 1 TFL 1 Sack 2 Interceptions with one returned for a touchdown and 2 Pass breakups.
Jaamal Berry: 32 rushes 266 yards 8.3 YPC (Mostly garbage time) 1 TD
In 2011 I look forward to seeing Roderick Smith take the field. I am very interested in seeing the new Boom and Zoom combo, between Smith and Berry. (Sorry Herron, I meant to imply the future Boom and Zoom and should hold off on that analogy until you officially go pro.) Hall is very elusive and makes people miss on punt returns. I noticed his speed wasn't overly impressive. I wouldn't rule him out as a starter for the first 5, hopefully just four games next year.
On defense, with out question, I am looking forward to Storm Klein starting at Linebacker. I truly believe that he is the next big name Buckeye at that position. I watched him during the few times that he played this year and watched his presence on special teams. This Kat can make plays. Rolle and Holman were under appreciated by everyone not a Buckeye fan, and flew under most peoples radar. After this year, I don't anticipate Klein will be afforded that anonyminity. His stats aren't very revealing, at 17 tackles and one interception but its the intangibles that I saw in him.
Of course, there is the unanimous favorite: Braxton Miller. You can write 4 or 5 different posts on the hype this man has coming in but I wanted to focus on the Buckeyes that already exist on this team. So Buckeyes, what say you....?

I don't know if I want to see Braxton take the field next year. I would've hoped for a redshirt so we could get the best out of him for a full 4 years (or however long he stays), but if they promised him playing time then he'd obviously be the one I'm most looking forward to.
Next would be CJ Barnett. I've been high on him ever since OSU started recruiting for him, and he started to show up this past year before his injury.
Next would be Jamaal Berry. I really want to see this dude get some meaningful minutes. I mean the guy can't even get a break on kickoffs. They're always kicking to Hall. The time he has seen on the field, he has impressed. And even on special teams, he has done some impressive blocking that has lead to some of Hall's nice returns.
Running back has always been my favorite position, so I'm most excited about seeing rod smith, jamaal berry, and Carlos Hyde. It's hard to believe we have those three guys, when any one of them could start around the conference. If I had to pick between them, I'd say rod smith. He seems like a good balance of power, speed, agility, and vision. However, jamaal berry is not far behind on my hype list.
Of course I'm also excited about seeing Braxton step in next year and hope he plays, but I cant help but be excited for travis Howard. I think he is a great coverage corner already, and can't wait to see what he does with more play time.
I heard about this young whipper-snapper named Moeller who might see some playing time.
Kidding aside, I cannot wait to see how everyone performs at runningback. I'm not looking forward to any particular back, but the young stable as a whole without Saine and (for a time) Herron. That will really dictate how those first games go. Granted, whichever QB is in there may surprise us, but we have to expect a learning curve beyond that of a running back.
I'm just looking forward to everything and want to go build a flux capacitor! To my knowledge, it just requires some track-lighting in the shape of a peace sign.
May not see him much next year, but I can't wait to see Ryan Shazier do some work. He seems like an athletic freak, and while we've had more than our fair share of excellent linebackers, Shazier's speed, size (assuming he bulks up), and pass rushing skills have me really looking forward to seeing him terrorize opposing defenses. He seems like a matchup nightmare
I like to try to keep an eye on the unheralded guys coming out of HS. The 3 stars that dont get a lot of love nationally. That said, with the WR position thin at best for the first 5 games, Im hoping to see guys like Bradley Roby, Tyrone Williams, Chris Fields or James Jackson step up. Someone is going to have to catch passes. Unless of course BauserLOL is starting, in which case God help us all.

The more I think about it, I almost want Boom to make the jump. Our RB stable is so full, I'm afraid we might see a transfer. Tress has got to get these guys some PT some how. One day and counting Boom.

The suspension will help with getting the other RBs some PT. I'm all for being selfish and keeping everything scarlet and grey, but if a transfer happens, it's not a major loss because we are stacked, and it would be unfair to keep the guy sidelined if he's capable of making a name for himself elsewhere.
Plus we have 2 running backs already with verbals for 2012. If I have my facts right. One is Ball and I am not sure who the other is.
I don't always take names when I kick ass but when I do, they most often belong to a Wolverine.
Not a lot of talk about Devin Smith. Here is a little bit from the kid during an interview.

Carlos Hyde, I honestly think this guy is going to be a BEAST. I just hope he sees the field some more. I'm not sold on Jordan Hall like others, and Berry looks to be pretty good. I think Hyde could be something extraordinary.
We have the talent to do a running back-by-committee kind of thing like Wisconsin and Sparty do. It would be kind of cool to see different guys get playing time and then Tress can ride whoever's got the hot hand.
I know they're going to be true freshmen, but being from Toledo, I'll be interested to see how TE Kenny Hayes(Whitmer), who is a beast, and DB DerJuan Gambrell(Rogers) do, if they see the field next fall.
C Jack Mewhort could see serious playing time in a rotation with Brewster, I hope. WR Corey Brown is another I'm looking forward to watching next fall. Someone needs to step up and be Pryor's "All-State Insurance Sure-Hands Guy" to replace Dane.
Beyond that, I am excited and hope Tressel gives some carries to Carlos Hyde. Dude reminds me of 27Eddie. We need a guy that can run through people. Boom, Berry and Hall are not that guy, IMO. They are speedsters, instead of the bruiser-back, aka Beanie, that has been sorely missed since he left.
I'll wait to see if Roderick can maintain passing grades before he has a shot before Hyde.
And to TommyWayne: I think a 1981 DeLorean would do the trick.
"Here officer, hold my beer while I find my license."
Definitely our STABLE of running backs.
