I know there is a rule change this year that mandates if a Big Ten or Pac Ten school is playing in the BCS National Championship the Rose Bowl must take a non-BCS school to fill the spot vacated by the team that went to the BCS National Championship game... But what I can't figure out is what scenario(s) end up elevating the Buckeyes to the Rose - which is almost certainly the best possible outcome for the Buckeyes if they win out from here. Anyone care to school a brother on how this might shake out?

The Buckeyes would have to be the only 1 loss team in the Big Ten. Which means Michigan State would have to lose twice...Wisconsin would have to lose again & we would have to win out. If Michigan State goes undefeated they still might not get to the NC game. Better to have them lose twice....any one loss MS or Whisky they get the tie breakers.
A one loss Mich. State does not get the tie breaker. If MSU loses and Ohio State wins out, the Buckeyes will be ranked higher in the BCS standings. To go the Rose and have a shot at the going to the MNC, Wiscy and MSU both have to lose one game while Ohio State wins out. If MSU loses twice then Ohio State could win the Big Ten outright with a Wiscy loss.
The three way tie puts OSU in the BCS lead. Wisconsin is currently ahead by .050 points in the computers, even after back to back huge wins for them. Their nonconfrence schedule would challenge that of the SEC September games. Suckitude isn't a good enough word to describe those teams. What OSU really needed was for Kirk to act like the coach of the year he always seems to be elected for, and rush more than 2 on punts. Idiot. That most likely will keep OSU from the Rose Bowl.
Yep. In addition to winning out, we would need Wisconsin to drop a game in order for the Buckeyes to get to the Rose at this point.
I think all of the above comments are off base.
2 things need to happen for the Bucks to get back to Pasadena.
1. Sparty needs to lose, and drop lower than the Bucks in BCS poll (and stay there).
2. Wisky needs to drop below the Bucks in the BCS poll OR needs to lose a game.
In other words, in a 3 way tie where Wisky, Sparty and the Bucks all have 1 conference loss, the tie breaker that would apply is BCS ranking.
Thus, the Bucks can still get to the Rose without Wisky losing. Many projections have the Bucks jumping Wisky in the BCS poll by virtue of the comparative strength of OSU's schedule to Wisky's over the final 4 games.
And we'll drink to old Ohio, 'Til we wobble in our shoes!
Yea its simple....stop dreamin
Tough to see a scenario in which OSU leapfrogs Wisconsin in the BCS without them losing...
I think it all boils down to this: The Buckeyes must win out, and Wisconsin and Michigan State must lose in order for us to advance to the Rose Bowl.
If all three win out, Wisconsin advances to the Rose, and we would likely become an at-large in the BCS. Ironically, Sparty would be the odd man out - despite being the only team that beat Wisconsin in the regular season. (Caveat: I suppose it's possible that MSU could leapfrog above us in the BCS standings even if we win out - in which case they would become the most likely at-large candidate for a BCS berth.)
Good article summarizing the Big Ten race here.
This is not true. Wisconsin losing should be enough. We are well ahead of Sparty. Wisconsin loses, we win out, we are good. Even if Wisconsin wins out too, there's a small chance we can jump them. It is looking unlikely, though.

You're right of course, Tom... Wisconsin losing should be enough to elevate the Buckeyes to the Rose. (I knew that, yet somehow confused the issue while typing the post.)
While unlikely, it's at least within the realm of possibility that Indiana, Michigan (at home), or Northwestern could pop the Badgers.
Mich St and Wisconsin do not need to lose, but that would make it easier, since Wisconsin is sitting 5th in the coaches and Harris poll. The bias in polls is unbelievable. It is who they want to be ranked. A three way tie with teams that didn't all play toss out the head to head. And then it is the BCS. OSU computer points go up with a win at Iowa, Wisconsin BCS points go down with an Iowa loss.
