My wife and I are going to be making our first ever trip to 'The Shoe' for the Eastern Michigan game. I was hoping to get some advice from people here on a few things.
- Where to park
- What to activities to witness (Skull Session?, etc.)
- Want to go to Thurman's Cafe, where is it? How far from the Stadium?
This is my first post, so please be gentle! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Parking- if you don't have a pass, I've had luck in the West Campus lots in the past. There are a few you can get to that aren't too much of a hike. Not sure if they have a shuttle running.
Skull Session is a must see. If you miss it, at least try to get between the Stadium and St. John Arena to watch the players go through. Lane Avenue is great for pregame activities. They still have Heineygate? I know Holiday Inn was turned into a dorm. Get to the Stadium 30 minutes before the game (or more). Buckeye Grove is cool to walk through (South side of Stadium).
Thurman's is 6 miles away. If you have a car, no problem. You aren't walking that, though. I would put Schmidt's on the list, Sausage Buffet is damn good.

Heineygate is no more, but there will be tailgates from behind the Schott to the far south parking lots next to the river.
Definitely hit Thurman's up.
Thanks for the feed back. We would like to get to columbus around 10:30 so we can hit Thurmans for lunch then head back toward the stadium for some pre game activities.
Thanks again...
I would pencil in a nap after Thurman's. At least I have never left there wanting to do anything but sleep.
Also be prepared for a gigantic wait for Thurman's....never been there on a gameday myself. But I have waited for over an hour for a regular, middle of the day lunch.
Class of 2010
Dude. Have fun. Still one of the best experiences of my life. Besides buying an M3 at 28, seeing my daughter born and holding her for the first time, and vacationing in Hawaii, NOTHING touches seeing a game in the 'Shoe.

I can't even begin to say how excited I am about this upcoming weekend! I can't wait and I hope the weather cooperates.
I hope we are able to get into Thurman's. I plan on arriving in Columbus around 9:00 and I don't think Thurman's opens until 11. I guess we'll see.
If we can't get in there, is there somewhere else that would be a safe bet?
Have fun! I've never been to Thurman's on a gameday but the only time I've gone and the wait isn't HOURS long was during the week a little after lunchtime. If I was you I would maybe call them and ask how busy they are during a normal gameday. Where do you plan on parking? Just an FYI they close Lane a little before kickoff so don't get stuck. West campus is a good place to park, I think its around $10 and they used to have shuttles to take you to campus( not sure if they still do).
Thanks, Jake. I will definitely call them. You are the second person to mention west campus for parking. Looks like that's where I'll be going as long as they still have a shuttle!
I am envious dude. I still remember my first game at the Horseshoe. Nothing like that feeling when you see it all in person for the first time.

This should give you all the parking information you need.
Since it appears that Thurman's might just be too busy, are there any other restaurants in the area that we might have a better chance at getting into on game day? (Was really looking forward to trying the Thurminator, however!)
I remember watching Man vs. Food, Columbus edition. There was a deli (can't remember the name) and Schmidt's was on there as well.
I'm open to suggestions....
It's the Ohio Deli.
The wait at Thurman's is worth it.
But I always end up at Jimmy John's, but it's really since I don't have access to them where I live.

I would love to be able to go to Thurman's, but I think I will be under a time constraint. We wanted to be able to go there, skull session, and maybe a Buckeye apparel shop on campus before heading to the game.
Don't know if there will be time for all of that....
why don't you go after?

All the more reason to visit again!
Well, I guess that's a possibility. Was hoping to go before and get started on the 2+ hour drive home (not counting traffic) right after the game.
What is the best apparel shop on campus, close to the stadium?
you're going to sit in more traffic if you try to leave right away rather than wait it out. Might as well stop and enjoy a burger.
on campus there's college traditions basically accross the stadium and conrads as well. I'd rather go to buckeye corner a little farther up Lane on west campus towards upper arlington. Better selection.

depends on what your looking for. if you want just ohio state t shirts(nothing too crazy) then universitees on the corner of lane and high is awesome because its buy 1 shirt at $20 get 2 free. If you want really nice shirts(example: Homage, Nike, etc.) then go to Conrads on Lane.
or try the team shop in the schott.

My girlfriend and I are making out first trip to The Shoe this weekend also!
40 years on this earth and it's finally happening!
Seats are in 22 B Deck, row 8. Probably not great but I'm not gonna complain even if I have to look around a pole every now and then.
Doing some tailgate and Skull Session for sure. Gonna be a great day!
I think our seats are in the c deck. Not sure, don't actually have the tickets in hand yet. I was hoping we would be able to go with some other people we knew so we could tailgate, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
Just keeping my fingers crossed that we will be able to get into Thurman's!
just go to varsity club, thirsty scholar, etc and you'll have a blast
doesn't matter where your seats are either, because it's just cool to be there. have fun.

OK, after years of having a pass, this year I am parking with the proletariet. Parking at the New Union is great. Its at the top of the Oval on High Street.
Saturday, we waited until the team had finished singing Carmen Ohio before we left our seats in 14C. We then walked to the garage and got in our car. It was approx a 20 minute walk, We were on High Street in 10 minutes and on 71 in another 10. From there you can hit German Village for Schmidt's, the Brewery District or the Arena District. If I'm not mistaken, Thurman's is even further south on High beyond German Village.
As far as the parking goes, we got to the garage at 9:30 and the third floor of the garage was empty. Its only $15 and is a great deal.
Skull session will start at 1:30. Try to get there before the band enters as thats a real adreniline surge.
This will be only the 4th home game I will miss since 1978 and only the second one I am missing voluntarily. HAve fun.
On the wall guarding the North Coast from all Weasel invasions.
My first game at the 'Shoe was in 06 against Northern Illinois. Of course, at the time, Ted Ginn was....magical. I had only seen these players on TV! I saw them walking to a bus after the game and saw them up close. Pretty neat. Enjoy your visits guys!

I will be making my first trip to the shoe next weekend against Indiana. Just wondering about the player walk. Do the walk straight from St. Johns to the shoe or do they take a certain route? This is the main thing I don't want to miss. I've been to Columbus for gameday but have never attended a game. Any inputs would be well appreciated.
My first trip to the 'Shoe WAS awesome! Got to take in the Skull Session and the Bucks hung 73 on EMU! The weather was perfect as well. I couldn't have asked for anything more...... Great game!
That's awesome man...

RE: player walk-
Unless things have changed, it was a pretty direct route from St. John to the closed end of the stadium. A crowd should form making it obvious. Keep in mind my info is from 2002.
