Perusing the Rivals team rankings for football recruiting, I noticed that by far three schools with the largest 2017 "committed" classes are the service academies: Air Force (with 43), Navy (with 65!) and Army (with 84!!). Surely they can't have classes that big enrolling, can they, unless they expect huge attrition in their summer "boot camp." Can they take in effectively an unlimited class since technically no one is on athletic scholarship?
I'm not suggesting that there is anything underhanded or unfair about this. I have nothing but respect for the young men making this commitment, and I'm all for whatever the academies must do to field competitive teams with the hurdles they face in recruitment. I'm just curious how this all works.
