Just curious if anyone had any reasonable theories as to why MSU/Dantonio has been so abysmal at recruiting in the last decade.
Since 2010, MSU has put together FIVE 11+ wins seasons with and gone 4-2 in bowl games. Yet, since the 2010 season their recruiting classes have been:
Year | 5* | 4* | 3* | Overall rank |
---|---|---|---|---|
2011 | 0 | 1 | 20 | 32nd |
2012 | 0 | 4 | 15 | 33rd |
2013 | 0 | 4 | 14 | 35th |
2014 | 1 | 3 | 18 | 25th |
2015 | 0 | 5 | 16 | 22nd |
2016 | 0 | 10 | 10 | 17th |
2017* | 0 | 3 | 14 | 28th |
So in that string of successful season, they were only able to pull in one 5* recruit in DE Malik McDowell. Dantonio has also been moderately successful in putting players in the NFL: Kirk Cousins, Darqueze Dennard, Trae Waynes, Lawerence Thomas, William Gholston, Brian Hoyer, Connor Cook, Jack Conklin, and Le'Veon Bell to name a few.
Even teams like Stanford, Oregon, UCLA who have had similar or less success in recent years are out-recruiting them consistently... Heck, even Kentucky has put together better recruiting classes most years. So what gives?
