Ed Davis, who took classes this summer to graduate, was out all of last year with an injury. MSU was only able to submit the paperwork to try to get Davis his 6th year after he graduated. As of today, their efforts were successful, and he will be able to play immediately.

Honestly, I'm a bit surprised. The rules for a 6th year state that you need two years of injuries prohibiting a player from playing in order for a player to qualify for a 6th year. Last year there's no question that he was injured. The year in question is 2011, his freshman year, which appears to be a voluntary redshirt instead of one spurred by injury. Here's a reddit post explaining the reason many (including me) thought he wouldn't be granted another year of eligibility. The short summary:

He was named scout player of the week for 2 separate weeks in his MSU bio for 2011: weeks 4 and 10. Not sure how someone can be scout player of the week while dealing with an injury that would keep him out of games. Possible? Sure. Likely? No. Furthermore, he dressed for every game and there was never any news about an injury in 2011. It's essentially a ghost injury in terms of finding exactly what they're claiming kept him out of competition.

From a "justice" point of view - happy for Davis. Sucks to have your final year ruined by an injury. That sucks for anybody. Now he'll get another shot before (likely) going to the NFL. However, the NCAA seems to have went against their own rules and/or MSU found a way to claim he had an injury in 2011. Interesting nonetheless.
