How do you evaluate the ability of a CFB head coach? Is it W-L percentage? Is it number of championships? Is it recruiting? Is it by exceeding expectations? Or is it a combination of these?
You can potentially distill coaching into two things: building a team that produces great stats and figuring out how to maneuver in tight games when neither team has a statistical advantage.
This article provides an interesting analysis of overachieving and underachieving coaches through a measure called "win expectancy". It looks at coaches' (with at least 4 years HC experience) actual wins vs. their 'win expectancy' since 2005. Coaches in the plus columns (more wins than their team statistically should have) rise to the top. Some of the names in the Top 10 and the Bottom 10 are obvious, but some names are conspicuously absent. (#56 will surprise you - seriously).
Just for fun, try to come up with your own lists before reading the article.
