I couldn't help but pull this over here because it's a topic of a lot of debate. Personally, this rubbed me the wrong way, not just as a college football fan...but to me it comes across as a load of self-righteous, pseudo-intellectual, short-sighted, click-bait porn for people who resent college football. Essentially the columnist is arguing the absurdity of college football using Maryland as his feeding post. Seems to be claiming that CFB is a drain on universities without noting that they're bleeding money already with non-revenue activities and overpaid administrators that do little to nothing but look pretty for the university and collect paychecks. Maryland may be dumb, but he takes a broad stroke to keep insinuating that college football is just killing the bottom line everywhere. Maryland football may not generate revenue every year, but it's more it less self sustainable at worst. At other places it's a huge revenue generator, keeps entire athletic departments afloat, is a major part of student life, helps in the community, affords opportunities to those with less privilege to get an education and is probably one of the very best marketing tools there is for the universities...even more so than overpaid administrators that are nothing more than glorified fund raisers. There's certainly arguments to be had about whether CFB should be a private enterprise, but I'm not impressed with this guy's attempt to hit the Mark. Wondered if ol 11W would have any thoughts on it...
