Confrence Strength

I had a thought over the weekend: how does one gauge conference strength? People say the B1G is having a down year, yet 4-5 teams could have finished 3rd (Indiana collapsed at the end of the regular season, but they were in position a few games ago), and with a 10-8 record last year, the Buckeyes were the 5 seed, while this year, at 11-7, they are the 6 seed. So I ask: is conference strength based on depth of the conference, results vs. other conferences (the B1G beat the ACC, who the media thinks is the best conference) or talent on the teams making up the conference? I feel like the B1G should be one of the top conferences this year because, other than Wisconsin and Rutgers, any team could beat the opponent on any given day. Yet, the B1G is supposedly having a down year.

Discuss (BTW, the Buckeyes are playing Minnesota tomorrow).
