With the commitment of 2014 guard D'Angelo Russell, I've been thinking about the great potential of the 2014-2015 basketball season. I'm very excited about the 2013-2014 season as well, so don't take this as I'm giving up hope on next season.
Just thinking of our 2014-2015 team has me drooling.
Guards: Shannon Scott, D'Angelo Russell, Kameron Williams, Jae'Sean Tate, Amedeo Della Valle
Forwards: Sam Thompson, LaQuinton Ross(if he doesn't go pro), Marc Loving, Keita Bates-Diop
Centers: Amir Williams, Trey McDonald, David Bell.
We'd have one more scholarship available (figuring none of the above leave early).
A lineup of PG: Shannon Scott SG: Kam Williams SF Sam Thompson PF: LaQuinton Ross C: Amir Williams is looking pretty solid. You have to remember that these guys will continue to develop between last season and 2014. A lot of those on the list are unproven on the college level, but they have great potential.
Our center position is somewhat weak. I expect Amir Williams to improve. I don't think David Bell is going to be much of a factor his freshman year, simply because we really won't need to force him into action. Trey McDonald: I'm not sure whether or not he is a serviceable backup on a tournament contending team. But, he still has time to improve.
Adding a top flight big man to this team would be huge. Jahlil Okafor would make this team a National Championship favorite (figuring Ross returns). Elbert Robinson out of Texas would at the very least give us a very serviceable big man to split time with Amir Williams.
Thad Matta has the future looking bright. Now we just need to keep Ross and pickup Okafor, Robinson, or another highly rated big man and we are right in the NC discussion for 2014-2015.
