I am amazed how good Vegas oddsmakers are. Last night UVA was favored over duke. I am just happy that I was not in vegas or ever bet against any of my teams (osu and uva) because as a UVA grad I have seen the cavs lose to duke way too many times. But it did make me think about all the controversy that goes with selection sunday in hoops and bowl selections in football. If the Vegas oddsmakers were involved we would get the best teams in the tourney and likewise have the best two teams in the bcs next year (4 in 2014). I just find it funny how they will put a bunch of athletic directors in a room when the guys who really know these teams are in Vegas.

Or the other option is that Vegas oddsmakers control sports to the point where they alone decide who wins and who loses.
It is a bad idea to have someone deciding matchups that really only has a financial interest in the outcome.
I put a small amount of money on Michigan, Indiana, and Duke to win during the week... Oops
I agree, its crazy how close most spreads really are for games. I don't know how they do it! Anything can happened in a game, yet their spreads for the most part are usually within a couple pts of the final score. Impressive.
That's a great point...Vegas would be much more likely to identify the best teams, or at least the teams with the best odds of competing well... All the at large bids being done by Vegas will never happen but I'd love to see the difference in their suggested field vs the ever lame committee that's currently used.

I don't know how good they would be at picking which teams are best. Their strong suit is taking match-ups and predicting how they will do against each other based on each team and player strengths, weaknesses, injuries, cohesion, venue, ranking etc. A lot of the info gathered isn't common knowledge, so they usually have the edge.
