He went to the wrong school, but you've got to love the Columbus product. Damn is he is good. I'd love him on my team. Good luck to him in his bright future.

I'm not completely sold on him but I will admit he looks like an NBA point guard. The sky is the limit as far as potential goes.
Just don't count on him to make shots in the final minute.
He's going to be frustrating to watch for fans of wherever he plays in the NBA. Point guards like him that have trouble playing without the ball can beat themselves. This game alone had some frustrating plays, where he kept settling for off the dribble jumpers without passing once on the possession. Doesn't mean he won't be good and avg 16 points a game, just will make plays that make you go "No why'd you do that?!". LeBron James used to do that to me all the time in Cleveland.
Right. He's in the same mold as a John Wall or a Derrick Rose. Trey, like John and Derrick, are really good players but they don't really make anyone around them better. They play with the ball in their hand a vast majority of the time. The problem there is that they are not creating for the other 4 guys, they are primarily looking for their own openings. Carmelo Anthony isn't a PG but is another prime example of a ball stopper. Those guys that get the ball in their hands and are like a black hole because everyone knows their not giving it up.
Look at Mich when Trey is trying to do too much. Big losses like Penn State and Craft shutting him down. When he penetrates and distributes is when Mich is at their best. Look at when we played them in Ann Arbor and Trey was finding open guys like Hardaway who canned about 37 threes it felt like.
Trey has skills but has to play within the team and not be a ball stopper.
I read that all like it was sarcastic.
Obviously I might be a little biased, but I think if any team got an MVP type player they would take that. Also, I disagree with the fact that Derrick Rose doesn't play well in a team atmosphere. I think you're right that he plays better with the ball in his hands, but when you have a guy who can take over a game like that he opens up the options for others. I also think that coming into the league all players are similar in that manner because they are use to being the best guy on the floor and a good player, Carmelo, scores enough to keep his team in it, but a great player learns to pass the options off.
If there is one guys his game fits, its Chris Paul. Wall & Rose are both 100 mph hellions, Burke has more pace to his game like Paul & is a much better perimeter shooter than Wall or Rose.
I couldn't disagree more. Paul Has excellent PG skills. At this point Burke does not. Burke plays more like a combo guard. I'd like to see how he'd do on a team where he isn't option one or two
Said nobody ever!
Class of 2010.
What school was he suppose to go to Penn State? He was never gonna be a buckeye and Matta never gave him an offer since we had Scott. Burke is good and I'll be glad to see him leave but I still think he needs another year to grow.
Ohio State's band SLAUGHTERED Michigan's band. If this were a football game, it would have been Florida State vs. Savannah State. - SB Nation following OSU vs. UM 2012
I think it is in his best interest to leave. Michigan relies on him too much. If this keeps up he is going to develop some bad habits which will really hurt him in the NBA where he wont be the focal point.
I agree, along with mostly everyone else, that it's in his best interest to leave. However it is not because we rely on him too much, that isn't even part of the conversation. He is ready to leave because he is arguably the best player in college basketball, bar none the best point guard, and has worked himself into the top 10/15 of the draft. If he came back, it would be solely to experience another year in college and help the team make a run with a more experienced squad and extremely good freshmen. It would also be to mentor/assist Derrick Walton as he prepares to take over. However, this won't happen and Burke is 99% entering the draft. I can't imagine any circumstance where he chooses to return for his junior season.
The best player in college basketball? He isn't even the best in the B1G from where I stand. He is a great college point guard and will likely have a fine NBA career although he is a bit undersized which will hurt him. But I don't get why people are trying to put him in a class with Chris Paul or Derrick Rose. I'll bet Mike Conley is a better comparison. A solid PG who starts and plays a lot, but isn't a top 5 PG in the league.
I said he is arguably the best player in CBB. You're entitled to your opinion, and some will think other players are better both nationally and in the Big Ten. But he just won the Big Ten player of the year and is in pretty good shape to take the national player of the year awards.
His comparison to Conley is much more warranted than the comparison to Chris Paul (I don't even understand the DRose comparison). Could he potentially be a top-5 NBA point guard? Who knows. Probably not, but I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years he becomes a very good player.
Maybe I am biased because I mainly watch him when he has played OSU and his stats in those games are:
So definitely not what I would consider anywhere close to best player in the country numbers. I realize he is going up against one of the top on ball defenders in the country in those games, but still... not impressive at all.
Those stats are irrelevant, seeing how this interaction has been in regards to Burke's performance this season. 3 of those 5 games were Trey Burke as a true freshman. In their two games this season:
1-1 Record
10-25 shooting (40%) 31 Points, 12 Assists, 6 Turnovers, 7 Rebounds.
Those aren't quite on par with his season averages, but for him to produce these numbers against the best on-ball defender in the country is pretty damn impressive IMO. We can leave it at this, but I just didn't want a majority of the statistics used in this debate to be from a year that shouldn't be considered.
My point wasn't about this season, it was merely that in the admittedly small sample of games that I have watched closely he has not been particularly impressive dating back to last season. Given the small sample size it is hard for me to pick out last year's games from this year's in my impression of him. You clearly have watched him more than I have, but based on what I have seen of him and the others I have seen, including Oladipo, I would argue that he is good, but not as good. And in terms of comparing him to others in the country, I guess I just don't see it.
He struggled tonight with the Indiana D forcing his drives away from the lane. With that being said I think with his pretty 3 point stroke he could definitely play off the ball. I question how he does night in/night out against guys who are just as strong and just as quick as he is guarding him up and down the floor.
Roll with it.
He created several 3 pt fgs tonight by driving to the rim and kicking to the baseline. He did pretty good on his own too.
He probably needs another year, but I hope he goes pro.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
No one plays D in the NBA. He'll be able to grow into a star, no problem.
Keep Calm and Ignore the Trolls.
dude.....
Yes, if this truism people like to throw out there were actually true then Deshaun would be a sure-fire lottery pick.
he reminds me alot of Wisconsin's former guard Jordan Taylor, a superb college player now playing in Europe.
Like everything else good at tsun, he's from Ohio!
Wherever you are, there you be!
Is it just me? I can't stand watching this kid. Every single drive, he starts with an arm hook or forearm shove. He is a walking offensive foul.
Craft has had success against him because he is stronger and quicker to recover. Which will most-likely be the case in the NBA...
Amen kbonay!
I've been saying this for 2 years now: nobody gets away with pushing off more than Burke. He's a nice player, but 85% of the time he drives the paint - he is shoving off with that forearm.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Thats usually what most players do when they drive to the rim. Some just more obvious than others...
If that's the case than he's made for the nba. How many times have you seen Kobe or Lebron do the push and fade?
5'11" is a little smallish for the NBA
Burk didn't go to the wrong school. Sullinger hand picked Craft to be HIS PG.
I would take Craft over Burke 8 days a week.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
Im not sure I agree with that. I love Craft but he's no Trey Burke...
Burke is an interesting prospect. I think he has the skills to be a very good player in the NBA if not all star level. I think we may undervalue his ability to distribute the ball (which is fine, because he is MMan now and f them)
His size is going to be an issue. The notion that "no one plays defense in the NBA" is ludicrous. Its just much more of a 1 on 1 game because of defensive rules and short shot clock. He is going to get posted up by bigger PG's like Rose, Kyrie, and Paul all day.
Like all things, its about opportunity, if he goes to a team that wants to run, I think he is great. If he goes to a team that is slow down and grind it out? I am not as sold.
How the hell did we let him get away.....
Burke will do fine in the NBA as long as Craft isn't on the opposing team!
