PHONE'S RINGING -- IT'S URBAN ON THE LINE
According to this, maybe.....
If Minnesota lands Smart, even if the former AD from VCU who hired him there is @ Minnesota now, I'd be surprised. It could happen, but I doubt it. I don't trust a random tweet when nobody else is reporting it right now.
I would think if he was making the jump to a major conference it would be with a more established program. No disrespect to Minny.
2 things that don't add up from that article: 1) didn't VCU give Smart a new contract last year after several schools were after him, including Illinois. Why would they be working on yet another extension? 2) Unless it's all about the money, why would he go to Minny if he rejected Illinois last year. And I've heard UCLA wants to interview him.
I would love this. 1) Good for an already loaded Big Ten, 2) A fine shot to Illinois' arrogance-congrats guys, Minnesota is a better destination than Illinois*
*Its worth noting Illinois fans are convinced their program is one of the best jobs in the nation and to this day don't understand why Bill Self left Illinois for a College Basketball Blueblood in Kansas.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Not happening. Smart and VCU just restructured his contract yesterday to keep him.
edit: now that I'm searching the internet....I might have to blame this mis-truth on Comcast Sportsnet
"Winter is coming" - Urban Meyer
I think it's unlikely, but wow what a huge get for the B1G if true. Shaka is from the Midwest though (Madison), so ya never know...
Update: Minnesota hires FIU Coach Richard Pitino, (son of Louisville Coach Rick Pitino)
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
I'm not gonna say that Rick Pitino's son Richard won't do a good job at Minnesota, because he just might. Who knows? The guy has been an assistant for both his dad and Billy Donovan the last several years. But, he has exactly ONE year of head coaching experience, and that was last year with Florida International.
My guess is that Minnesota's AD didn't realize the Minnesota job was gonna be such a tough sell and he actually thought he was gonna land Shaka Smart; never really gave a thought that it wouldn't happen. Otherwise, why fire Tubby? Sure Tubby had probably underachieved, but you replace him with a guy who has a good name and assistant coaching experience, but only has one more year of collegiate head coaching experience than I do.
Yep...risky gamble. He should've got a firm commitment from the new guy he originally wanted before canning Tubby.
