Random thing that caused RMU to win that I think people will look over: They purposely dribbled to the back corner and called a timeout and made Kentucky's inbound defense look ridiculous on the ensuing play
As a UK student this is a pretty embarassing loss and adds to my opinion that Calipari isn't the best x's and o's coach in the NCAA. That being said the guy makes up for it with (possibly questionable) recruiting. They're likely to get Randle tomorrow which will give the the number 2,3,4,9,11 and 13 recruits in America next year even after losing in the first round of the NIT.
You know, I saw a post on Facebook this morning...I think it was from ESPN...posing the question of whether a national champion should get an automatic spot in the NCAA tournament the following year. This is proof that the answer to that question should be NO. I'm not one to overly complain about ESPN, but what a dumb question!
In other related news the "kid in play" haircut has decided to go pro. NBA experts project it to go in the top ten because it was the most dominating thing on the Kentucky roster.

"A troll by any other name is still a troll".
It's hard to deny his methods though. Before this year, the last 7 the worst one of his teams has finished was the sweet 16, that was 1 time, Everything else has been elite 8 or final four. They have perhaps the best recruiting class ever coming in next season. They'll be back making deep runs in the tournament this year.
He had to replace the top 6 scorers from last years team. This particular group wasn't very mature and they didn't play for the name on the front of the jersey. Last year's group did, and they had experience coming back. Quality experience.
I'm not saying they'll win the title next year, and lord help me if they do, I'm deep in enemy territory here, but Calipari's history shows, that it's not very often his methods yield a team that finishes before the elite 8.
I'll also say tonight, that their fans aren't taking it that hard. They keep saying, that's ok, my trophy from last year makes me feel fine. Or NEXT YEAR we get number 9!. It's nuts!
Ok guys I'm a uk fan ill be honest, team was bad this year. Had to play guys that shouldn't have. But next year they will be very very good with the recruiting class they have coming in plus after the game Poythress Goodwin and Cauley all said they were probably coming back. Also the calipari comments are unfair because the players just didn't buy in this year. Another thing why do you all hate uk, most uk fans I know have nothing but respect for ohio state and usually root for ohio state in games
I don't think Calipari is the best X's and O's coach out there. I don't think he's really very good X's and O's wise at all. I also don't think he can develop talent that well. He can get extremely talented guys to buy into his system and win, but a guy like Wiltjer would be a star with Coach K. He should honestly transfer because he'll never be more than a role player for Calipari.
I don't think it's fair to call him a cheater really either. His programs have been in trouble 2 times, but it wasn't because of him. Marcus Camby took gifts from an agent. Derek Rose cheated on his SAT. This stuff had nothing to do with Calipari. Like him, don't like him, but it's hard to call him a cheater when he's never been connected to any of the trouble Memphis or UMass got into. You can fault the kind of kids he's recruiting. A guy like Bledsoe or Cousins doesn't care about UK or the program or anything else. They just want to get to that money. I'd be willing to bet UK will fall on hard times at some point, but it'll be because no all kids will be mature like Davis or Gilchrest. One will take a gift or money from someone and land the program in hot water.
It's difficult to believe trouble just happens to show up at the programs Calipari has been involved with and he's not directly responsible for the consequences. How many times has UMass had even a sniff of trouble since he left? Memphis (to me) will always have questionable ethical behavior around their program, which made Calipari a great fit for the school. It's not a coincidence that programs coached by Calipari have found trouble.
Kentucky tried to do things the right way by hiring Tubby and the delusional fan base and administration got too impatient with him and decided winning by exploitation (both players like Bledsoe, Cousins, etc. exploiting the program and guys like Worldwide Wes and Calipari who exploit players) was more important that winning by recruiting players that were at least college material on some level.
Ohio State football has had it's issues with entitled athletes and jock-sniffers that made questionable decisions all in order to get closer to the program, but it doesn't get any more entitled and jock-sniffing than Kentucky basketball. The town and fanbase cover up for the questionable behavior of the athletes (Terrance Jones wrecking an Escalade while drunk and fleeing the scene is just one that comes to mind) and the players are enabled by everyone on the campus.
I don't know if you're a UK fan or not. Many UK fans claim innocence for any and every question regarding the ethical behavior of their program and if you disagree, they throw out juvenile terms such as 'hater' and 'jealous' and ramble on about 'facts', which is quite amusing.
Doing things the wrong way in order to win has always been easier at Kentucky, so they brought in the guy in college basketball most notorious for cutting corners to win ballgames.
In my opinion the trouble that has followed Cal is no different than the trouble that followed Tressel. He had problems at YSU and multiple problems here. Most of it got swept under the rug because it was the players who took the benefits and he claimed he had no knowledge of the situation. It wasn't til he slipped up and sat on info that he got in trouble. Maybe you believe Tressel is in the same mold, I don't know, but many around here would never say that.
I just can't see how Camby taking gifts from a booster has any more to do with Calipari, than Troy Smith accepting a loaded handshake from a booster had to do with Tressel.
I live in Greater Cincinnati (and used to work in NKY). 95% of the UK fans I know hold nothing but ill will towards anything related to Ohio State (football, basketball, fans, the Big Ten conference, the state of Ohio). There are a few UK fans who are not bad when it comes to the Buckeyes (but few and far between).
As far as rooting for OSU in games, I never see that. If it's non-conference, the people I know root for the non-conference team OSU is playing and if it's OSU-Mich, OSU-Wisc, or other B1G games, they're always pulling for non-OSU.
I really don't care if UK wins or loses (they don't matter to me one bit unless they're playing Ohio State), but their fan base really leaves something to be desired in terms of how they carry themselves.
I do enjoy Keeneland in the spring though! A fun time every time!
I agree with you completely! I live in NKY and there seems to be some manufactured rivalry between Ohio State and UK. I tell them every time we are in no way shape or form rivals, but they don't seem to agree. There's a lot of hate toward the Buckeyes that I don't get.
I think the SEC mentality feeds into this manufactured rivalry. And that fact that Kentuckians (even close to the river) mostly considers themselves Southerners, which means Ohio State is public enemy number one when it comes to college athletics.
Covington's police department has patches on their sleeves with "Covington, gateway to the south" (or something to that effect). Mention to Northern Kentuckians that they're from Cincinnati and most will quickly correct you with "I'm from Northern Kentucky." Cincinnati is not to be confused for the same thing as NKY to many folks. I admire the pride for the state and the basketball program in Kentucky. Sometimes when I see "M" or "ND" fans in Ohio, it makes me wish all Ohio residents had just as much state pride as our neighbors to the south.
I don't know about that necessarily. I live in NKY. I really don't think people in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties really think of Kentucky as "the south" Maybe when you get down to Grant, Pendleton, Bracken, Gallatain and Owen they do, but I can honestly say in my daily interaction with people here in NKY people consider us much more midwest or Cincinnati like than southern. Lexington, absolutely thinks they are deep in the south.
Our little region is kind of a weird place. People from Cincinnati don't really like NKY as a whole, and it drives them nuts that NKY people say they are from Cincinnati when they travel. People from the rest of Kentucky don't like us that much because we identify as from Cincinnati and not Kentucky. Then there are the older generation like my grandparents who don't dare cross the river, like it's the Berlin Wall or something lol.
I do always tell people when they ask that I'm from Northern Kentucky, just south of Cincinnati, Ohio. If I tell people Elsmere,or Florence, or Ft Thomas KY(all places I've lived) they'll have no idea where the hell that is.
You are right though, no matter where in the state you live people are extremely proud that they are from Kentucky. This is where I'm a bit weird I guess. I just don't see the big deal about what state I'm from. There are things I'm proud of, and things I'm not. I've been to 45 states and I've found a lot of stuff to love about all of them and stuff to hate about them all. I could see myself being just as proud to say I lived in Rhode Island, or Iowa, or Arizona as I am proud of Kentucky.
Identifying with a major city is easier because it gives people a geographic idea of where you live. If you live in Nerk, Ahia, you tell people (that are not from around the area) you are from Columbus. It's just easier that way.
Those UK fans hate us so much because they know they live in the shadow of THE Ohio State University even with their eight NCAA hoops titles. They can win 8 more and still play second fiddle to OSU. That's gotta drive them bonkers :)

But next year they will be very very good with the recruiting class they have coming in plus after the game Poythress Goodwin and Cauley all said they were probably coming back.
If these players come back, won't it cause Calipari to oversign?
My guess is guys like Hood or Paulson will "decide to be walk-ons". I also think there is a real chance some guys will see the talent coming in and decide to take off to a place where they actually get to play. It would really be dumb for a guy like Wiltjer to stay and rot on the bench when he could go somewhere else and play very well.
I'm still skeptical any of these 3 will come back. I saw a projection last night that said Collie Stein was going to be the number 9 pick in the draft. I don't see how, but that's what it said.
I think they only had 10 scholarship players on the team this which is less than you are given and mays an beckham both graduated which means they have a max of 8 scholarships with Noel possibly leaving depending on how the rehab goes. There has also been talk of harrow possibly transferring but he said he was staying after the game as well.
As a KU fan I love this. Kansas is trying to catch them in most all time wins and I was afraid they would go and win the NIT picking up a bunch of cheap wins in an otherwise mediocre year.
The downfall to the one done method was obvious this year...some kids think just because they play for calipari they will be lottery picks. They don't realize you have to listen, practice hard and actually give a shit. Last years team succeeded because they bought in and played together. This team had too many guys who wanted to get theirs at the expense of the team. Some kids just aren't coachable...and that's the real issue.
Well he's got another 6-7 top recruits coming in, so we'll see how much of a downfall it is. I think it can be risky because it is not a given that the team will gel, but when you have that kind of talent you give yourselves a chance every year.
Umm.. If you recall that was an #8 v. #9 matchup in the NCAA tourny. The teams seeded there have similar levels of talent and the game could go either way.
Kentucky was the #1 seed in the NIT..Robert Morris (a school with an all time losing record) was the #8. RM was basically an afterthought of the tournament. The difference in talent between the two teams is absolutely staggering. That is why this is such a huge upset, aka all the mockery.
Big difference there. UK's loss was in the NIT. If Robert Morris had won their conference tournament, they probably would've been a 16 seed in the NCAA.
The OSU loss to Sienna was in double Overtime in the NCAA tournament. It was an 8-9 seed matchup which means the teams were pretty evenly matched.
Oh how the mighty have fallen
Lovin it! I live in Pittsburgh, and i have a few friends that go there and saw the game. Crazy game.
