Per CBS Sports:
Tubby Smith has been fired at Minnesota, sources told CBSSports -- cbssports.com/collegebasketb…— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanCBS) March 25, 2013
Just 24 hours after UCLA finally admitted it had fired Ben Howland, the University of Minnesota has reportedly axed Tubby Smith after six seasons at the helm. While rumors of Smith being on the hotseat have percolated throughout the season, speculation intensified during the tournament. While Smith's squad dismantled the Bruins in the Round of 64, the team was fairly well manhandled by the three-seeded Florida Gators in the Round of 32.
Not everyone in Minnesota is happy with the idea of firing a coach who won a National Title, albeit at the University of Kentucky, but Smith has not captured lighting in a bottle in the Twin Cities. In six seasons in the Big Ten, he's recorded an overall record of 124-81 (.605), but a disappointing 46-62 (.426) in conference play, never finishing better than 6th in the standings.
Smith's Gophers made it to the NCAA tourney three times in six seasons, but were first-round outs in the 2009 and 2010 tourneys. In 2008 and 2012, the team played in the Not In Tournament, and were runners-up there last season.
