B1G officiating is horrible

I don't mind the guys being allowed to play a little BUT that was ridiculous! When the fattest, sloppiest guy on the court hacks everyone all game (like the play where Sam Thompson was thrown to the ground) and never gets called for a single foul until the last 2+ minutes with that flagrant neck grab on Craft, it's out of control.

At one point MSU had gone to the line 10 times to our 1, in a very physical game. How can Nix play that out of control without being called for anything until the neck grab that couldn't be ignored?

I bet Nix has never played that many minutes at any level without getting a foul called against him...horrible refs.

The officiating was absolutely awful, I agree.  The no call on Slam Thompson's attempted dunk included him getting whacked all over both shoulders, but of course that's not a foul! It was awful, and also seemed like they would call ball out on us regardless of the situation.  I think we could have won by at least 10 if we weren't being called foul for breathing on people.

And was it just me, or did Jim Nantz seem to have a love affair with MSU the whole time? "Ohio State with the layup... (with a bored tone).... AND.... ADRIAN PAYNE WITH THE DUNK, OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!", and then his "THAT'S A CLEAN BLOCK!!!" on the obvious Thompson foul...  Geeze man, at least try to appear impartial, by the way he was calling the game you would have thought MSU won by 20.

Nevertheless, we won, and I'm happy with the way we pulled it off.

Nantz is probably the best in the business, but leave it to Ohio State fans to come up with theories why every commentator is against them haha.

Haha yes that is totally fair, after espn and Mark May we are just feeling hated on by all.. But I never even take care as to what announcers are saying until it appears that they are clearly favoring one team over the other, and it felt that way to me this afternoon.  I do agree though, Nantz is usually pretty good.

I don't know man. His "that's a clean block" comment was referencing that the officials called it a clean block. He said it so loud and emphatically because he was shocked it wasn't a foul. Both commentators recognized the ridiculousness of the call. And a dunk is naturally more exciting than a layup. Nantz was absolutely in love with Craft all game long. I'd say the love was shared for both teams today.

Nantz should stick with golf.  It seemed to me that he favored MSU.  I enjoy Clark Kellogg, Gus Johnson and Dan Dakich.  Don't mind Steve Kerr.

Refs missed a few like they always do (Nix's "clean block" on Thompson), but overall this season I don't think they're as bad as so many think they are. But yeah, while watching the game the irrational fan in me says they're the worst ever.

As for Nantz, I don't really think he cares one way or the other. He seems bored almost. But I get what you're saying about announcers seeming to favor the other team after a big play. The only big time announcers I ever truly felt were rooting against OSU (basketball) were Billy Packer/Verne Lundquist.

Jim Nantz has absolutely no credibility whatsoever he's a yes man all the way down the line

Battles are sometimes won by generals; wars are nearly always won by sergeants and privates. Football is no different, the guys down in the trenches win the games, not the coach.

Not sure which game you watched, but the announcers were noticeably upset about the No call on Nix when he assaulted Thompson. All of them complained that it wasn't even close. There was no bias towards OSU in my opinion

The officiating really wasn't too bad tonight.  They obviously missed that fast break call.  But overall it was pretty solid.  They went to the line more because they got the ball inside a lot more.  We were shooting around the perimeter a ton and you just don't get fouled if you are spotting up and shooting threes the whole game.

Rdubs, the fact that you have to preface your statement with "The officiating really wasn't too bad tonight." means it was bad! Degree of bad might be one thing but even if it was only 1 bad call, it is a bad called game.

but it was more than 1 bad call. It was multiple bad calls plus it was multiple missed calls and play that was allowed to lead to the Craft incident. The refs allowed the game to get like that, its on them no matter what the degree is.

and I don't feel angry about it, just think it was pretty bad. I actually think it started in the first half with Ravenel whacking on Nix and I think Nix was building frustration because they weren't getting any calls (not complaining at all). He let it out in that second half and could have really hurt Sam and Craft. The refs allowed that aggressive play to come out.

I hope tomorrow's game isn't affected. Let them play, but call the obvious.

Payne completely shoving Deshaun under the basket for the rebound.

MSU's over and back call. He did not have control although I'm not 100% sure about that rule.

Ravenell's foul on Payne for 3. He didn't touch him. Rediculous.

I suppose when I can only remember 3 missed calls then it's not that bad of a night but these calls were rediculously obvious and could have had a huge impact.

I don't remember the Payne shoving DeShaun play, but I remember the other two and thought they were good calls.

The rule for over and back is that the offensive team cannot be the last one to touch the ball before it goes into the backcourt and the first team to touch it in the backcourt. So, if you are guarding me and not the ball out of my hands causing it to roll off of my leg into the backcourt and I go grab it in the backcourt, that is a violation on me. If I remember right, MSU was the last one to touch the ball before it went into the backcourt.

The Ravenel foul was a close one, but in my opinion it was a good call. Ravenel has to let Payne come down from his shot. Just like when a player is attacking the basket in the paint and a defender is not allowed to slide under while the shooter is in the air, you can't don't that on the perimeter either. Payne shot the ball while jumping forward. Ravenel closed out, while turning to box out. Payne came down on Ravenel's back. Foul on Ravenel.

At least thery're consistent. They blew several key calls at the end of the Iowa-MSU game last night.

I remember Nix getting away with a "hook" against Ravenel, which Ravenel got called for.  I didn't think officiating was terrible this game though.

Listen, you don't want a whistle-happy ref in a B1G game.  They are physical and rough and make for great games.  Can anyone argue that this MSU-OSU game was a hell-of-a tllt?

Watch what happens in the Dance when a B1G team comes up against touch-foul calls.  It's not pretty.  It's been the achilles heal of the B1G for years.  We play strong, physical, grown-man basketball all year then get into a touch-foul fest.

Also. Can anyone get a GIF or a video reply of the "foul" on Thompson. I must of missed it honestly like the refs and would like to see it.

I thought it was better than average today, which of course isn't saying much when the average is pretty bad.  The whole Nix not getting a foul until 2 minutes to go was complete BS.  That fat ass should've fouled out of both games they've had in Chicago.

I like the "let them play" style more than constant whistles. But when guys get absolutely mugged (Sam Thompson by Nix) and there is no call, the players see that and think they might be able to get away with a violent neck grab. That could have been real bad for Craft. If the Big Ten is the best league, get the best refs. Don't call us, we'll call you, Teddy Valentine.

Squirrel Master's picture
Squirrel Master on 16 Mar 2013 - 10:15pm #

Plus it is the track record too. It is not like Valentine just had a few bad calls this one time. He has a history of missing calls and reffing a street style game. I don't mind the let them play but Nix was getting pretty aggressive at the end there and the refs did let that build. Valentine needs to reevaluate when to swollow the whistle and when to control the game. Get a physical team like MSU and it could get nasty.

I'm not sure who worked the game at IU but they were enjoying a nice 16-5 foul advantage with 5 or 6 minutes remaining.  It's not just this game, but all year.

There were a lot of non-calls I saw yesterday both ways... but they were more questionable. But Thompson getting mugged on the fast break should have been a foul!

The officiating was some BS today.  It felt like they'd call us with some ticky tack shit, but then let Wisconsin get away with not-so-ticky tack shit.  The guy who hooked Thompson's neck...I get that the shot clock expired, but there's no need for shit like that.  The double dribble call when a Wisc guy actually knocked the ball out of Craft's hands...terrible.  The carrot top douche flopping all over and he got the call a couple of times.  Dude's leaning back before the contact ever comes...are you serious?  I'm so tired of B1G basketball officiating - it's a bigger joke than B1G football right now.  Glad our guys overcome the BS and still won.
