B1G coach of the year........

Watching the MSU vs Wisconsin game on ESecPN and they brought up end of the year awards and had Bo "whiny" Ryan as their coach of the year.......my question is what does Thad Matta have to do to win coach of the year....it seems like every year he gets looked over for the award and yet even after losing Sullinger and the buckeyes still being in the race for regular season title he gets looked over again......it baffles me that he hasn't won the award more with the success Ohio State has been having during his tenure......Thoughts?

I was more sad that they projected Oladipo to win Defensive Player of the Year and not Craft.  Admittedly I haven't followed Oladipo much, but Craft has been a game changer in big games.  He's shut down Burke - possible player of the year - multiple times.

Thoughts?  Is Oladipo that good on D?

Thought this was a very good point as well......along with the fact of tressel not winning in 02' and urbz not winning after bringing the team back from the woeful 11' sesaon.....

If Crean wins it, it will be a joke.  IU was pre-season #1.  When OSU is projected to be a top team nationally and win the big ten...and then they do...no one pays attention to Matta.  It's kind of open in my eyes, with those top 5 teams so close.  Could have been Groce since they started out of nowhere, but they fell off.

Exactly my point.......I went back and saw a ton of articles that had Wisconsin ending 5th in the B1G which is exactly where they will end up and yet everyone at espn has been writing articles on bo ryan for COY.....personally the predicament Thad Matta was in at the start of the year and then at times throughout the year, he deserves the COY award hands down......the only coach that I personally think would even be in consideration is either Izzo or Groce

The only problem for matta is we ranked top 5 pre season

I feel like Ohio State coaches are looked over mostly because they coach at Ohio State. We are seen as a top tier program so when one of our coaches is having a good season it is expected. These awards seem to be given to a coach that outperforms their expectations. I guess thats the price we pay though for being the best ;)

Painter won it for purdue when he had johnson and moore.......izzo won it the year he had lucas.....yet matta rarely gets recognition when he has a down year and still manages to be in the hunt

That is basically what I was going to say. If an OSU coach wants to with B1G COY then they should probably not coach at OSU. Year in and year out you are expected to be great and luckily/unluckily they often are great.

Like shades of Tressel getting passed over in favor of the Ferentz.....

Matta has won the B1G Coach of the Year award three times already (2006, 2007, and 2010).

OSU has been well represented with the award. O'Brien won it twice, as did Randy Ayers.

This. Matta has received his recognition. Be at peace now.

I missed the game, at what point were they saying this, because they missed their chance to make a statement win tonight that actually would've at least supported the argument for Bo Ryan.  I think it really should go to Thad this year because of the aforementioned loss of Sullinger, making boys into men this year, especially after the Massacre in Madison.

<Insert same reasoning for why Urbz wasn't coach of the year>

Seriously, though, Bo Ryan?  He is such a bitch.

Class of 2010.

Kirk Ferentz should be B1G Basketball Coach of the Year.

I think Groce should get it, Illinois was a dumpster fire at the end of webers time and Groce has 3 or 4 top 10 wins and a 20+ win team

Lemme just say that I don't give a flying you-know-what anymore for any "-of-the-Year" awards.  That's not to say that I'm not happy when a Buckeye wins one, but when you consider two things: (1) Kirk Ferentz won it over Tress in '02, and (2) no Ohio State has won COTY in the B1G since Earle in '79?  Are you kidding me?  Just keep kicking backside on the playing surface, making haters along the way, and it'll be fine.

Sorry, I was speaking only of football.  You are correct, of course.  However, that proves my point - I had actually forgotten that Matta had won it three times b/c I really don't give it too much attention anymore.

The problem with Ohio State coaches winning Coach of the Year awards in football is that we are so damn good.

Not trying to sound conceited or anything but it's true.

To win COTY, you have to bring a team back from a not-so-good previous year.

That is why Tressel never won it. I agree that he should have won in 2002, but ever since then, we have been expected to win. Although the number of wins this season compared to last season shouldn't constitute a good coaching job, it always does.

You are absolutely right when you speak of Ohio State's dominance on the girdiron.  But (and I know you said this already), Tress took a very pedestrian OSU team from '01 and ran the table, and Urban took a team that tied for the most single-season losses in school history dating to the 1800s and ran the table with them the following year.  Neither guy won it.  That's my beef.  Tress' victory would've come 21 seasons after Earle in '79, and then assuming Tress won it, Urban's would've come ten years after Tress.  I don't think three COTY awards in 30-some years is too much to ask.  So, the heck with it.  Just keep 'em crying when the game's over, and I'll be satisfied.  The Little Eleven can have their postseason awards.

Matta should definitely be at the top of the list for COY. With what he has had to work through and the level the team is playing at right now, no doubt.

Oladipo is very good on D but not at Craft's level IMO... you get on more highlight reels for blocking shots into the 3rd row like he does, but Craft's non-stop, in your face D the whole game at point, which disrupts the other team trying to start their offense, is more valuable.

Only coaches that should be in consideration this year are Matta, Groce, and Izzo in my opinion
