Hey guys I was just wondering if anyone had any info on how payne's recruitment went? I know he's from Ohio and I think he was on Sullinger and Burkes all Ohio red aau team. We're we ever in the running for him?

I remember we offered him and wanted him pretty bad but he chose MSU
He's from the same high school as my wife and we watched him absolutely destroy(with a bad shoulder no less) the competition his senior year of high school in route to a state title.
If I remember right, I don't think he wanted to go to the same place as Sullinger. We tried, but I think that OSU getting Jared was why Payne went to MSU. Ohio was really deep that year, and I guess we just couldn't get 'em all.
Does he not like Sullinger?
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.
I would think Payne didn't want to follow sully, fearing he wouldn't get big minutes since Jared was so good
i think it was more he didnt want to play in a 1 In 4 Out system with a In guy like Sullinger he would have been forced to out play him or ride the bench while Izzo will run all types of systems
From Dayton OH. My understanding is it came down to osu, msu and dayton. MSU was the biggest school with playing time. UD was hometown favorite.
I would have loved for him to have went to UD. Even though he ended up going to MSU, the wifey and I still cheer him on.
Thad dropped the ball the past couple years......taking sullinger we basically took weatherspoon who flopped as well as sibert who flopped.....replace them with payne and burke and we win nc hands down
Trey Burke was not a highly sought after commodity. He was committed to perennial basketball powerhouse Penn State prior to going to Michigan. Thad Matta isn't immune to criticisms but revisionist history isn't fair either.
4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off
Not much you can do about the sully situation. YOU CANT TAKE THEM ALL, move on.
Payne didn't really come down to the wire. I don't think he ever really strongly wanted to go to Ohio State. It's not like Thad didn't recruit him at all and just chose the other guys over him. Aside from that, Sibert was a consensus top recruit. He was a McD's AA I believe. Sometimes players don't pan out. By the time Burke was even sniffing the scene of getting any sort of recognition outside of the MAC, Penn State, and mid majors we already had a PG in Craft that was showing signs of promise as a freshman and a McD's AA in Shannon Scott already committed. It's not like football where you can just stockpile guys and find out who pans out...they weren't going to take a mid-level recruit in Burke just for the sake of taking him considering the class was already full. Matta also hauled in Sully and Deshaun Thomas and a little guy named Aaron Craft (who wasn't a big name recruit himself) so it's not fair to say he just dropped the ball on that class. We did after all go to the Final Four with that team so it's not like they were a total bust.
I remember Sibert was one of the first 5 stars in their class on rivals when the rankings first came out, I thought he would be a really good player for us.
I thought so as well. I still think if he'd stuck it out he may have panned out. He certainly looked the part, he was strong and athletic and had good size to be a 2-guard. He was supposed to be a sharpshooter though, and just never found his stroke. I almost feel like if he'd stuck around and maybe gained more confidence he may have been able to put it all together. You certainly can't say Thad didn't give him every chance to succeed before enough was enough and he just had to sit him on the bench for someone that will be a little more productive (i.e. Lenzelle).
