2013-14 Basketball

This is all hypothetical, but let's say Deshaun Thomas decides to stay for his senior year. We would return almost the entire team from this year. The tournament hasn't started yet, so we have no idea where we will finish when it's all said and done, but we could potentially have a very good team next year. Even if Deshaun would leave, Shannon Scott and LQR have been playing better and better, and could have great years next year if they keep progressing. All in good fun, what do you think some realistic expectations are for next year's buckeye team, with one more year under their belt?

A second round pick makes decent cash...

I doubt Thomas leaves unless he's a lock to go in the 1st round. If he's told by several sources that he'll most likely go in the 2nd round, I'd wager that he'll come back for one more year to finish his degree.

Second round picks can accept required tender, which is a minimum established for NBA player-rights retention. D-League contracts are added on top of this.

If he does, I will apologize and eat crow. I think there's a 99% chance he goes. I don't think he should, because he needs to expand his game, I just think he was really close to going last year and will go this year. I'm just looking at it rationally, there's no way he stays.

I don't think he necessarily needs to expand his game, I think he's already done that. He can score from anywhere on the floor, is a strong sturdy rebounder and I've been impressed with his progress on D. I think Deshaun's issues will more so be physical limitations. He's really a forward that's the size of NBA 2 guards. He's not exactly an explosive athlete and could struggle at wing at certain things in the league. I see him coming in as a shooter off the bench. He'll be in the league and he'll get drafter...he's certainly going to be making much more than 25k. If Deshaun was considering coming out after last year, I think he's probably going to come out this year, especially with a 1 year old kid. There's not much he can really improve upon dramatically to take him from an early 2nd round pick (late first round if he tears it up in the tourney) to a lottery pick. He's just not going to be able to dramatically improve his stock by sticking around another year.

I think he could develop the midrange game a little bit more, post scoring too. His shot selection has been off as of late, so just timing and placement of shots.

Bolt's picture
Bolt on 20 Mar 2013 - 2:49pm #

His shot selection has always been off as long as I've watched him, the only difference is he just hasn't been making them as of late. I think he's very strong inside and just naturally crafty enough to make moves to the bucket. I think he can knock down mid-range jumpers all day without breaking a sweat. The reason we don't see as much of it is because the other teams we play run a double team at him every time he touches the ball inside the arc...and I've been impressed with his vision and passing out of double teams this year. A lot of his kickouts from doubles have led to buckets, maybe not off of his assist but off of the next pass or the one after that after the defense is scrambling to recover. You watch Deshaun inside the arc 1 on 1 and he'll score on you all day...the problem is we never see him get the opportunity at 1 on 1 inside the arc.

What part of Greece? Rhodes? Yes it is gorgeous, but I've been to Athens, Rhodes, and Olympia, and while Rhodes and Olympia were pretty, they don't have basketball teams, and Athens does, and Athens is the anus of the Mediterranean.

Also just because a place is beautiful doesn't make it a great place to live, economically speaking Greece is a tire-fire, and will be for some time..

Just because you get drafted by a team doesn't mean they will pay you. Overseas players only get paid by NBA teams if they had a guaranteed contract before they went overseas.

Joe4's picture
Joe4 on 20 Mar 2013 - 10:20am #

I also tend to think that he leaves.  I follow the Chad Fords and Draft Expresses of the world, so I know he's projected as second rounder.  However, I don't think he moves up the board by coming back next year.  It gives the scouts another year to pick over his game, and next year's draft is typically rated as better than this year's.  So, I think he will give it a shot this year, hope to sneak into the first round, and if he falls to the second, do his best to make the league/play overseas/do whatever he would ultimately be doing were he to stay for another year.

Also, Bob Baptist always says that DT was really close to leaving last year, which I think also suggests he's gone after this year, even if he isn't assured of going in the first round.

Joe4's picture

Some more on our guys' NBA prospects:

Potential second-rounders: Deshaun Thomas, G/F, Jr; Aaron Craft, PG, Jr.
Wait 'til next year: LaQuinton Ross, SF, So.

This Ohio State team isn't loaded with NBA talent. Thomas is one of the best scorers in college basketball, but his lack of elite athleticism and his porous defense have kept him mired in the second round. Scouts love Craft's defensive toughness, but does he bring enough on the offensive end to justify drafting him? Ross has the prototypical physical tools to be an NBA prospect, but his production has been spotty this season.

What kind of production should we expect out of the 2 in coming frosh. Minutes? points?

IMHO if the freshmen don't bring serious production then we are looking at a 7-10 loss season and challenging for the B1G title like this year. If DT comes back we are a 2-3 loss team and national title expectations out the roof.

I disagree with that. If Craft, Scott, Smith, Thompson, Ross, and Williams all make the necessary improvements, Ohio State can be a force next year, even without DT.

2-3 losses? No. Maybe around the same as this year. Like I said, if those players I listed make improvements, Ohio State will be fine without DT.

Selfishly, I hope DT returns, but even if he doesn't Matta should once again have a very solid team. I think Q and Thompson can pick up some of DT's scoring, and think they will both average around 15 a game. Next years team will still have probably the two best on-ball defenders in the country. The team will be rather veteran as well. If Amir can work on some things - a lot of things - in the offseason, I think next years squad could be very tough.

God damn that's a pretty f*cking good milkshake! I don't know if it's worth five dollars, but it's pretty f*cking good.

Scoring won't be an issue, that is for sure. With the ever developing game of Thompson and Ross and the incoming skills of Kameron Williams and Marc Loving, there will be plenty of ability to score. Not to mention more experience for the sharp shooter Della Valle.

Size will be an issue whether Thomas stays or goes. Ravenel leaving means there will only be Amir and Trey McDonald for any amount of post pressence. I expect that both will develop more but a 3rd or 4th body would be nice to have.

I do forsee a future small lineup being the main lineup unless Amir makes a huge jump in skill. We could possibly see a lineup of Craft, Scott, Thompson, Ross and Thomas if he stays or a lineup of Craft, Scott, Thompson, Ross and Loving (not sure if Loving would fit though). Of course this all depends on whether Kam Williams will come in like a lightning bolt and work his way into the lineup. He can score from anywhere and beat his man which is more than any of us can say for the rest of the team, perhaps outside of Ross that is.

I see Amir W. following former  Buckeye Ken Johnson's progression through his college career. Maybe 3-6 pts a game from him is junior year, but a increasing force underneath the hoop on defense. His senior year to average 8-10 pts , 8-10 rebounds and 2-4 blocks a game. He is a slower developer, but the key is, he is going to be a big contributor by his senior year. You can already see it in his defense. His confidence is starting to grow and show.

My wish list for player development going into next year is ;

   A) Smith Jr. to continue to grow into the "D. Lighty type of player". Does the dirty work with high energy and his pts. per game to not fluctuate so much. Be able to count on him for 8-10 pts every game.

  B) Sam Thompson to make about 2-3 three pointers a game and to drive to the hoop and score almost at will. (Mike Redd). He misses his lay ups too often.

  C)Amir be like Ken Johnson.

  D) Shannon Scott to be "Mike Conley like" going to the hoop. It is an automatic assist or bucket when he drives the lane.

  F) Craft to be, well, Aaron Craft for another year.

 G) Trey McDonald to be Evan Ravennel. 15-20 workman like minutes per game.

H)One of the incoming freshman be a solid #6 or #7 man on the team.

When Ross catches the ball in rhythm it is just an unreal thing to watch, his ball doesn't even think about touching rim. I think if he works on his footwork and shooting off a dribble / faceup that he could be a giant force for us next year. I wish he could get on Mariottis weight lifting program though :)

I don't see how Della Valle will ever play for long periods of time.  Will he be better than Loving, or any of the other recruits coming in over the next few years?  I love the kid, but I just do not see it happening.

Matta has said he's the smartest kid on the team (surprising, given Craft). I could see him develop like Diebler (three specialist-->threes/defense-->threes/defense/passing-->threes/defense/paint scoring); I definitely think he's a four year guy.

I know this isn't squarely responsive to the thread topic, but I really think this is the year for us to make a run because there isn't an overwhelmingly great team out there.  I think our team last year was better than our team this year is, but last year's Kentucky team was just unbeatable.  To my mind, there is no team like that this year.  Obviously anything can happen, but I think it's wide open this year.

As for next year, I'm not sure.  I see Kentucky is bringing in a great class again, and Duke has Jabari Parker.  It may be that the competition will be tougher next year, regardless of how good the Bucks are.

I agree, Duke will be seriously good next year. Kentucky will be dominant again (as long as Calipari can maintain control).

Oyster's picture

Didn't Kentucky go one and done in the NIT already?  If they are dominant next year that will be quite a turn around.  Obviously they lost quite a bit from last years team, but I never would have guessed at the beginning of the season they would be out in the first round of the NIT.

The class they're bringing in is quite good, especially if Randle picks them (as expected) today.

Oyster's picture

How many of them will be a 1 and done player?  What gets me is how Coach K can keep his players on the team, for years, in some cases sitting until it is their turn to play, and he does it every year.

Set your avi
AllDay028 on 20 Mar 2013 - 11:50am #

Several of them, more than likely. It looks like they are going to bring in 7 players in this class. Which basically means they will probably have to kick a kid or two off the roster for next year to make room. But it should be as dominant a class as there is in the country so they certainly should be very good again next year. In fact, I would bet they are top 5-10 preseason.

Set your avi
UrbzRenewal on 20 Mar 2013 - 1:45pm #

Since they pretty much have a top two kid at each position, I wouldn't be surprised if they were top two preseason.

Calipari had better hope he can coach up next year's team to do something great, because if not it will be two straight years of underachieving, and most likely not drastically improving his 'one-and-done' players' draft status.  That could hamper his current recruiting strategy that has led to top class after top class.

Noel was still projected by some as a top pick prior to his injury, but only because there really hasn't been anyone else in this draft class emerge.  Goodwin and Poythress have been disappointing overall, and now have some scouts questioning their readiness to make any sort of impact in the NBA.

What is Cal going to do if those two, as well as Noel and Cauley-Stein, don't jump to the league this year?  Not only does he have a scholarship crunch issue, but now he's got to divide minutes between incoming frosh who want the limelight and the ball in their hands from the get-go, as well as a few sophomores who may get a little jealous and a "kicked to the curb" feeling just because they didn't produce right away as freshmen, as they were expected.

Should be interesting to see how he handles this, and how it affects Kentucky's strategy/player development plan going forward.

Randle ended up choosing Kentucky so it appears they will be LOADED with young talent. It'll just come down to how that talent can bring it all together and buy into Kentucky's system to determine how good they can really be.

Yeah, this is crazy.  Randle is the #1 PF, and they also have "No. 1 point guard Andrew Harrison, No. 1 shooting guard Aaron Harrison, No. 1 center Dakari Johnson, No. 3 small forward James Young, No. 9 power forward Marcus Lee and three-star power forward Derek Willis. Randle, Young and the Harrison twins are all top-10 overall recruits, while Johnson and Lee are in the top 20."

DT will get drafted in the late first round possibly early second. He can shoot and score from just about anywhere on the court. His defense isn't horrid but can be improved on. He needs to work on creating shots off the dribble and passing but I think he will always have a spot in the NBA.  He reminds me of Antwan Jamison and last time I checked he was still earning a paycheck. I wish him the best of luck and hopefully he can get drafted by the Cavs.
