Final Four

Ok Kansas just lost. I don't care what anyone says....its WIDE open this year. If we play like we did last night, consistently in March.....Aka Ross and Amir keep gaining confidence, we can make another Final Four run.....PS - Urban drink your coffee!!

It all depends on the draw.  If we get lucky and match up against teams without dominant inside games then I think we have a chance. But I don't think we are going to beat Duke or Kansas, although I recognize KU just got drubbed by lowly TCU tonight.

We played Duke close for the whole game in NC, only to lose because I believe this is a team that didn't have it figured out yet. Each game I watch, the more solid things I see, and if Q Ross keeps turning into the game changer that we thought he'd be, this team is much better than their record.

Ryan Kelly is out indefinitely for Duke. The way this team is playing we could beat Duke. This team is progressing as the season goes on. How they perform against Indiana is going to be huge.

Depends on the coverage, in my view. Don't know who they put on Oladipo, but he's a handful to cover. With Amir's newfound strength in the paint, I think he fares far better against Zeller than he did against Withey or Plumlee, but still a mismatch. That said, much of the reason IU pulled it out against UM is their ability to get to the line in the second period. I'm not sure if they can do it against better teams, but OSU has been great about fouls, and limiting those opportunities will be huge. I have confidence that the Buckeyes have overall better athleticism, and if they can move off the ball, it'll be a great game.

Only thing that scares me with Zeller is that he is a runner, likes to get beat his man down the court and Amir is not the fastest guy in the world.

likes to also get beat backdoor for game winning layups.

If L Smith is hot and Craft sees his sports psychologist we could conceivably sniff the Final 4

If not, we could get outed in the round of 32

We struggle to defend, outside of Kraft. To be honest, I don't think we'll be able to handle Duke if it comes down to it, especially once they get Kelly back in the lineup. Just isn't our year, IMHO.

How do we struggle to defend, on the perimeter we are easily the best defensive team in the country.  We just can't rebound and Amir is turning into quite the shot blocker.

First, your inability to spell Craft's name right gives me reason to believe you dont know the Buckeyes very well.  Second, I dont know what team you are watching but we are one of the best defensive teams in the country.  Craft, Zelle, Sam Thompson, Shannon Scott all are great defenders.  With Amir developing his inside presence and DT playing decent defense we dont have really dont have a weakness on D.

Agree except that I would not rate Scott as a great defender.  He does make a fair share of steals, but he gets beat a lot.

A Williams is becoming a good help defender but he's very average on ball as Duke showed in the second half.  Ravenal is a lot more polished as a defender and as a defensive rebounder.

I have come to appreciate L Smith as an almost great defender, and, get this, the best offensive rebounder I have seen play for OSU.

Some people think that Scott is a better defender than Craft he is very good.  As far as Amir Williams goes he is definitely the weak link defensively but he could end up being the best shot blocker in school history.

I'm well aware how to "officially" spell Craft's name. However, to me he is more deserving of the "Kraft" spelling (per swiss cheese) for all the "holes in his game." Until he develops a jumper and quits turning the ball over, he will never be the "go-to" guy we need. His defense is tenacious and his leadership is second-to-none, but that's where it stops IMO. Sam Thompson is athletic, not a great defender. L. Smith is the epitome of a bad defender, mainly because of his ridiculous shot selection each and every night. They say the key to a good offense is a good defense. Well, in Smith's case it is the exact opposite... a bad offense (poor shot selection) is a bad defense. Amir puzzles me. I'd say he is about as strong as Sean Bradley and about as ferocious as a field mouse. I'm not a hater or a troll, but to say you're one of the top defensive teams in the country (outside of Kraft's individual performance night in and night out) is somewhat of a ridiculous claim. You have Thomas on "O" and Kraft on "D"... about where it ends for the buckeyes this year. Again, just my personal opinion and everyone else is entitled to theirs... that's what these boards are all about, no?

We're 17 in the country in defensive efficiency and 2nd in the conference... Pretty sure that's not just Craft

I definitely think we have a shot and if you asked me that a couple weeks ago I would have said we wouldn't make it past the 2nd round.  It's accurate to say that there really are no dominant teams this year, if Amir continues to develop and someone gets hot in the tourney and compliments DT's scoring we could make a run for it... with that said we could also get knocked out very early.

I think it will be crucial in the next few weeks to keep pushing Amir to be aggresive and to be more confident, his inside presence will be huge come tourney time.

FF is a definite possibility.  CBB is really down this year in terms of elite talent and elite teams.  A weak fresmen class plus Sully, Barnes, etc. came back last year because of the lockout.  So really there's just 15-20 pretty good teams, but none that are dominant.  If OSU learns to close against good teams, they'll be a tough out.

Can't defend?  LZS? Thompson? Scott? Even our bigs have come along with their defense.  This is one of the top defensive teams in the country.

Agree that there are no elite teams.

But looking at the depth of the field, it's my opinion that there has never been a year where more teams have a legitimate chance to win it all.  1 through 10 are basically indistinguishable as are 11 through FORTY.

We could see 4 Big teams in the Great Eight or we could see zero.

My money is on Kansas because they are the strongest inside team, but Dicky V will tell you that the guards are the who wins tourney games, so he's probably picking UM.

My Elite 8 will contain Louisville, Syracuse, Indiana, Kansas, Duke, Michigan, and 2 other teams that I am still looking for.  They've all their lapses and losses, but I think these have been the best that I have seen this year.

I don't think you can include UM without OSU. OSU beat them at home and had UM in the crosshairs with an overtime lose on the road. Either OSU belongs with them or both are out.

I see your point, but OSU did get waxed by Illinois, not to mention that UM made a pretty big effort to climb back in the game at OSU when they lost and I'm not quite sure what would have happened in that game if it were just a bit longer.  Consistency is a key and I'm not ready to say OSU is consistent - this is my opinion though.  I was on the fence about UM, so playing by your rules, they could be exchanged for another hot team at the time...probably another big ten team, whoever is playing the best come tournament time.

If the game was just a bit longer??? That makes zero sense.  Games are 40 mins unless there is OT the day we played them in Columbus they were not the better team for 40 mins....so they don't get "extra time"

Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

Sorry, it was meant as a figure of speech and intended to mean that they dug themselves such a deep hole that they didn't have enough time to comeback from it.  I know we won, but I'm not sure that we were the better team for 40 minutes either.  I know we were better for 10 minutes and built a lead during this time that we clung to for the rest of the game....barely.

In theory, I agree with you, however I think Michigan is a farm more complete team.  They have a lot of guys who can score.  I mean yes we played Michigan very very well both times, BUT even in basketball it's a big rivalry and Thad has seemed to own Michigan as well. I just don't think there are enough people who can score on Ohio State right now, to think they'll make a deep tournament run.  They are getting better and Amir and LaQuinton Ross have improved, but to me there is still a long way to go before I think this is a Final Four or Elite 8 team.  Good thing is, once the wheels start rolling, teams tend to improve rapidly this time of year.
