Hope that's true (for Buckeye basketball selfish reasons). I didn't think he'd last this long seeing as he has a child.
I checked on several mock drafts several weeks back and only one had him going in the first round, as a late round pick. My question is, if he stays, will his stock actually go up? Also, I know that he has a child, and I wonder if he can afford to stay another year.
It's really hard to see how his stock goes up by staying, unless his offensive game gets so good that it overwhelms the "tweener" issue, which won't go away no matter how long he's in college. For instance, his 3-point percentage has gone up every year he's been in Columbus. If he can get that up over 40%, it could help him, since he's not going to make a living the way Jared Sullinger is--he's going to need to hit the longball in the pros.
I don't expect him to stay, but obviously I won't mind if he does.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
The addition of Kam Williams and Marc Loving should actually help him get a few more open looks and take less shots so his percentages should improve.
Unless he is in a terrible financial situation because of his son, I could see him coming back next year. I do not think it is possible for him to become a sure fire 1st rounder. If he comes back next year he could set the all time scoring record at OSU I believe and get a degree. With him, OSU would be a top team in the B10.
I think this makes sense. If he goes in the first round and can sign with a contender (and make their roster), fantastic. I think he's too good to settle signing with a team that wants to send him overseas to develop for a couple of years. That might not be good for his child either, unless he takes them with him.
A degree is a great fall back to the NBA. How many players really make it past their rookie contract anyway?

He reminds me a ton of Adam Hess from William & Mary in the early 00s but a lot better shooter. Same size and quickness level. Hess never got past camp invites in about ten years of trying for the NBA. But he did play almost ten years in Germany and Turkey making 6 figures every year not including the housing and car perks. Even if the NBA doesn't pick him, he can make a lot more overseas the next ten years than he can behind a desk in his mid to late 20s. He can work on a degree in the offseason.
I really don't see what benefit he would have in staying. (Although I selfishly wish he would) Going in the 20's during the first round could be a great option for him. Going to the NBA as a scoring option with little pressure to carry a team on his own will give him the year of development that he may get playing another year at OSU. I say may because having to carry the team like he has had to do this year hampers his ability to develop defensively considering he shoulders almost all the load on the offense.
I can see DT staying for his senior year based on one condition: he concentrates on slimming down even further, increasing his quickness/athleticism, and ballhandling ability.
Right now he's a tweener 3/4 in the NBA. He can definitely score if he is a volume shooter at the next level (most likely for a bad team), but he'll have trouble defending the 4 because of his size, and the 3 because of his overall lack of quickness. He'd also basically be relegated to a spot-up shooter and at times a post-up game if he is matched up with an NBA 3. If he improves his handle and athleticism, he becomes more of a prototypical 3, albeit with a combo 3/4 offensive game (think Carmelo Anthony).
If the expectation for him returning is to just improve on the skills he has currently, I don't see the point. It won't drastically alter his NBA stock. He needs to expand his game in order to guarantee himself a place in the 1st round of an NBA draft.

Best of luck to him either way, he's really turned into one of my favorite hoops players we've had here. Never dreamed that would have been the case when he came in as a frosh.
Deshaun is a great Buckeye. I hope he makes the right choice. He can stay and have his education paid for or try for the draft which he is likely a 2nd round choice. IMO his draft choice won't change a lot between now and next year but an extra year certainly won't hurt and the degree is a great thing to have. I love the guy and wish him the best even if that means him leaving this year. He was all Buckeye even when pressured by the Indiana crowd.
I'm surprised in a year where the draft is so weak, he's projecting as a 2nd rounder
great scorer...But:
-not fast
-not athletic (by b-ball standards)
-not a great jumper
-not a true jump shooter, 3 point guy
The way he gets most of his points in college are crafty moves to get a good look pretty close to the basket, and that really doesn't translate to the NBA game. The bigger athletic guys who give him the most trouble in college are all he'll see at the next level.
Love me some DT but he's got 2nd round talent. Unfortunately for him, I do think it was much more likely someone may have over-paid and drafted him in the 1st round last year...the attention Sully got in the tourney really helped free him up to shine.
D. Anthony
dt is a scorer at any level... if he wants to be drafted high he most work more on his defense. i promise you guys the tweener thing isnt as big of an issue as his defense, which i think many have alluded to by saying hes not great athletically.
mark may wins douchebag of the year... again
His stock will never be in the 1st round unless he finds a way to play defense and expand his game.
He has had two seasons as a starter to figure this out and he really has not.
The sad truth is that the NBA seems to devalue players who stay four years. They'll never admit it, but the idea seems to be that if a player was really good enough, they would come out earlier because the league values potential over production. Everyone is looking for the next KG or Kobe or LeBron, and more well-rounded, established players with lower ceilings but much higher floors go much higher in the draft.
Such is the conundrum for DT. If he waits another year, he may end up going later in the draft because even if he has a better senior year and adds to his game, more of "the book" will be written on him and he won't have the perceived "untapped" potential of younger, less polished prospects.
This is true. Some of the knocks already are regarding not only his skill-set, his tweener position stauts, and his defensive play, but also his age. Thomas is 21 right now and will be 22 in August.
Not a chance he returns, unfortunately.
ok all mighty future gazing wizard
from what I am told, DT is likely gone no matter what...everyone has different sources, mine is very close to the basketball team and that is what he is telling me---all I can really go off at this point
As much as I'd love for him to stay, the man needs to get paid. He's got a family to feed and the fam always comes first.
Lets not forget that only 1st rd contracts are guaranteed $. If Thomas gets drafted in the 2nd round he would have to make the team and a roster spot to earn a contract
according to the source from the article, rather than being drafted 2nd round and not the first, he would prefer to return and become one of tOSU's all time leading scorers and get a degree. also says he will most likely to play in europe
i was septical when i read it as well...especially with his kid. by NO MEANS am i disagreeing with alex (i love everything you do)...i just wanted to share the info
If he stays, his legacy at OSU will become that much greater. I hope the best for him either way.
