...They had no effect on college basketball
/S/
Those who stay will be CHAMPIONS!
~Bo Schembechler
They made a lot of $ at UM
They refuse to discuss that part but will instead go to the immorality of Tressel. Funny that something very similar is in the comments of the linked article.
To me the Fab 5 were fun to watch and all and they were flashy with the big shorts and big time swagger, but at the end of the day, as influential as those teams might have been, Bob Knight is right, they didn't win anything. They're the equivalent to the Buffalo Bills teams that lost 4 Super Bowls in a row.
A little chippy, but an interesting viewpoint. As a B1G guy, you can clearly sense Knight's resentment that his championship teams are never mentioned with the same sense of reverence that Rose, Weber, and Co. command. I would suggest that their impact on recruiting and "super classes" has more legs than anything they did on the court, which was great, but as Knight notes, not great enough. The shorts? The socks? Meh.
When does the 30 on 30 about Butler come out? In my mind, a much, much better story about a two-time runnerup.
Until Juwan Howard last year, the only member of the fab 5 to win anything was Ray Jackson winning CBA rookie of the year. To me they will forever be the team that ended the careers of the 1992 Buckeye basketball team, my personal favorite OSU team of my lifetime. And for that, they can go to hell.
That Ohio State team was a much better team than that Michigan team was! They beat Michigan every time they played them until that tournament game in which Chris Jent missed a fairly easy shot that would have won Ohio State the game in overtime.
thank you for bringing that point up...
I loved seeing that time out that webber called in the title game....awesome!!!!
After the travel that wasn't called.
Hated that team. Always though they got away with fouling, pushing and going over backs when Michigan shot foul shots.
I hated that team too, BUT I can't stand Bobby Knight either.
Is this the guy whom you can't stand? The Hall of Famer?
I personally do like Coach Knight. I don't much resent anything he says about the Fab Five. It's a bit overwrought, but that's okay.
Knight counted Bo Schembechler among his best friends, and the first time that he almost got fired (before the second, third and fourth times he almost got fired before he really got fired), he very nearly took the job at Michigan.
I prefer to remember Coach Knight like this.........
An angry fan...rooting for an angry team...led by angry coaches
This is what other Big Ten fans think about Woody. This is why we can't have nice things.
"I like to kick Michigan's ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum."
Me, I am a big Bobby Knight Fan. Do not like three of the four National Championship Rings he owns. But the first (the one he won as a player @ OSU) kinda love that one.
That and now that Indiana's so far in the rear view it seems like he has been embracing his Buckeye roots. The Coach he seems most likely to share his coaching knowledge with (excluding Pat Knight) is Thad Matta. I've heard Matta mention a couple of times that Bob Knight had given him a tip on plays or practice techniques.
He is a crabby old man and I get how he rubs some people the wrong way, but that's one of the things I love about him. I heard he is writing a book about life advice. Like "Kisses don't heal wounds" and then advising kids to say no when there Mom says "is that all better". Its a so bad its good thing.
Knight's cool. Ohio boy. Threw chairs and shit ... I think in the Pan Am games too.
Bobby has a point. Those TSUN teams never won anything, and neither will this one.
Class of 2010.
I watched that ESPN documentary on the Fab 5 and remember what Jalen Rose said about Coach K "never recruiting players like me." Jalen, that's because Coach K liked actually winning national championships. Say what you will about the man, at least he knows how to coach and knows which players can really get it done as opposed to the Fab 5, who accomplished dick.

It's not just the players knowing how to win, it's the man leading the team. There's no comparing Fisher and Coach K. Case in point, the Webber timeout. A coach K player would be completely aware of the situation and would never make an idiotic mistake like that.
It wasn't Webber's fault; someone on the bench was screaming at him to call it while they jumped up and down doing the time out sign.
"Don't put syrup on shit, and tell me it's pancakes"
No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
It was his fault that he travelled 10 seconds before calling the timeout though. I wonder if the refs had actually seen that and called it would that be thought of as big of a choke as the timeout?
Just so we can all relive it...
Loved that timeout by webber. I hated the fab 5 immensely. Cant decide who is the bigger douche bag, jalen rose or desmond howard.
I just can't find it in me to hate either of those guys. Maybe its because I am too young to have seen them in Michigan uniforms. IDK I know I'm supposed to hate them but I don't.
Michigan's Fab Five changed the culture of not only college basketball, but all levels of basketball. The baggy shorts, black socks, tattoos, etc. led to players more freely expressing themselves through their preferred attire. Deion Sanders did the same thing (to a lesser extent) with college and pro football.
I enjoy reading comments about how Bob and Bo were such good friends. Bo and Woody were best of friends (even though many casual fans wouldn't agree with or understand this). Ohio State and Michigan are such heated rivals because they are the most similar to Ohio State than any other school in America (no matter how much the most arrogant UM fans will deny this). I want to beat Michigan more than anyone else, but sometimes we have to give them credit where credit is due. Even though Webber and those guys never won a title, to deny their impact on the game and culture is wrong. No other team in any sport had ever inserted an entire starting unit of freshmen into a lineup. And they nearly pulled it off.
I still laugh when I see a higlight of Webber making that TO. Classic *ichigan right there. They were all style and no substance. No titles of any kind and they took a lot of money. They will forever be a blackeye to *ichigan.
Its good to be the king
My favorite Bobby Knight moment was when Jamie Skelton killed them yet again, and after the game Bobby Knight unleashed and said something along the lines if Jamie Skelton could play everyone like he does against Indiana he would be a G$D Dam% All American....
that cracked me up then and still does today.
I love the Fab5 because I so often see TTUN fans going on and on about how OSU cheats while having the Fab5 as their avatar. Hypocrisy at it's finest.
