Apparently the feud between Bo Ryan and Thad Matta lives on. Just a few weeks ago, Bo Ryan skipped out on post-game presser after the loss at Value City Arena, then did an impromptu Q&A outside the locker room. This weekend, Thad of course showed enough class to meet his media obligations. That's where this gets interesting.
Matta: "It’s funny because I felt like we had two great days of practice in Columbus. We were specific with what we were going to do. I knew we were in for a battle. This was a flip of two years ago at our place. I’m sitting over there like ‘my gosh, I’ve seen this before but on the other side of it.’" (This is not the first time Thad has referenced practices after a big win or loss)
Bo Ryan: "But I found out a long time ago that the types of practices you have before games are overrated. When people say ‘oh man, we had a great practice, I knew we were going to play well and we did’, I learned a long time ago, coaching in high school, never to say that because I thought we had some of our worst practices and played really well in the game and just the opposite. So as a young head coach in the 70s in high school, I learned never to say that.”
Yikes.

I have noticed Matta talks about practice a lot. If you listen to his interviews, the guy mentions this and that about practice and how certai guys are improving in practice and practicing hard. I know that practice is important, but yeah, Bo Ryan is kinda right; practice doesn't always dictate how you play in games, both good and bad.
And man, I cannot stand Bo Ryan, but the guy can flat out coach.
Of course that would correspond with 1870's...
He must be a good coach. Wisky rarely ever has elite hoops talent. Mostly guys with bad hair and uglier faces. must be all that cheese.

Is Bo Ryan able to make it to day games?
Or does he have to go to ground in the arena the night before so sunlight doesnt burn his fragile vampire skin...

Bo, can we quickly count B1G titles, tourney titles, final 4, etc before you teach Thad what you learned as a young head coach.
While we can all agree that someone needs to punch Bo Ryan in the face, or feed him some garlic and holy water, his record isn't that bad:
For comparison, Coach Matta's credentials:
So, Ryan's winning percentage and impressive string of NCAA tournament appearances probably give him a little bit of credibility in the whole "how to coach basketball" discussion.
Please return to your regularly scheduled thoughts about the best way to pummel Bo Ryan's face, please.
Damn you research. He is a good coach (puked a little), still a clown, and not quite as good of a resume as Thad.
Yeah, well when Bo makes a Final Four, which will probably never happen, then he can talk. That said, basketball is an unpredictable game, and sometimes practice doesn't translate to the game.
Class of 2010.
Ryan is a very good coach. Look at his recruiting classes and what he gets from those classes. It's impressive, and not many guys do more with less.
AndyVance: excellent comparitive analysis all around - good breakdowns, well-organized presentation of the data, etc. Not surprising to me, because I liked what I saw at your blog.
Let me just add, though, that Bo's Elite Eight was almost a decade ago. His 06/07 and 07/08 teams majorly underachieved (crashed and burned) in the tourney. Since then, he's managed to grind out a couple of sweet 16s, but has never fielded a team that was even remotely dangerous in the postseason. I know he's done a lot with less-than-elite talent, but recruiting is a major part of his job.
Perhaps all that stuff Bo learned - which he smugly suggests Thad hasn't learned yet - maybe he leared it too long ago. You know, the old "I've forgotten more about basketball than Thad knows." Yes, Bo, but Thad doesn't need to go as far back in the memory bank as you do to remember a special team he coached.
As is often the case, Senor Fido, you are correct: Ryan's deep runs in the tourney (and conference titles, for that matter) were in the early years of his tenure. I think what surprised me when I went to dig up the numbers was the string of consecutive NCAA appearances: more than every other coach in Wisconsin history combined (almost by a factor of 2). He's definitely not recruiting on a level with Matta, but I'll give Nosferatu credit for getting those corn-fed farm boys playing at a high level compared to their Blue Chip-less status.
Great breakdown on careers, Andy. Bo does have some "cred", but is in dire need of a straight right hand.

I would put more stock in what Ryan says if they would ever........ Win the conference championship. Seems like they always finish 4th or 5th in the conference.
how can you expect to get better if you don't practice well?
bo ryan is the DEBOL!!!
I like football
bo ryan is still coaching, didnt know that, but being insignificant in the college game (has he won any kind of championships?) (maybe cheese eating contests), i really dont keep up with the jerk.

I would live to give you 100 upvotes for this; we joked about the a lot during my deployment last year, especially when someone got in trouble.

First and foremost thank you for your service. Secondly, The Allen Iverson practice scenario can be played out so many ways for so many different scenarios it's great. This is my way of telling Wiscys coach to shove it.

Not to defend Bo Ryan, but he was right....at least about yesterday. Regardless, he should have just STFU about Thad.

Bo's a bitch. OSU is having a rough one this year but I still think it's anyones conference. If OSU turns it on they can compete with anyone. Thad Matta is the best coach we've ever had. We'll bounce back. Go Bucks!

I would not agree that Bo Ryan is right. Not only does correlation not equal causation, but he also seems to be going off some anecdotal evidence of a number of occasions in high school basketball. He's a good coach and that's his opinion, so I respect that (except for it apparently being a reaction to a coach he may be jealous of or harbor bad feelings for). On the flip side, Matta is also a good coach who apparently sees practice as a good predictor for game performance. If you are saying Bo is right then you are saying Matta is wrong. While I agree sometimes a team has good practice and follows it with a bad game (and vice versa) I would bet that more often than not a week of good practice is followed by a good game and a week of bad practice is followed by a bad name.
See. This is why I want nothing more than a single punch at his noggin' Just one punch, is that wrong of me?
The guy is an azzhat. He goes out of his way to be one too.
Bo Ryan? kind of a dick, but i do think he is a good coach.
Here's the deal, Ryan is a dick. The opposite of bulimia, now at Arkansas, was and is a dick. There is somethng in the water or maybe just an inferiority complex epidemic up there. The new football coach will soon be a dick. He is doomed.
[Edit] sorry - computer issues; I didnt mean to post the same comment twice
i thought alvarez was a dick as well. And Im glad they took the last Rose Bowl loss with Alvarez as acting HC.
