Gene Smith has indicated that Thad Matta's contract has been extended through the 2019 season. Really happy that tOSU is continuing to reward a guy who has taken this program to another level.

Correction, it doesn't add years, but increases his pay from $2.9 mil/year to $3.2 mil/year. Contract going to Board next week for approval. It would end July 2019.
Refreshing that this is an informative post as opposed the weekly, obligatory-after-a-loss, "Can Matta coach thread?" Keeping him as head coach until 2019 would be incredible and go a long ways to keeping OSU as a power in basketball.
This is good news, but can Matta coach? :-P
Just kidding. This is for the best.
fantastic news. this will help with recruiting too imo.
Love it! Too many people don't realize what he's been able to do for this basketball program. The stability, the consistent performance, doing it the right way, etc.
I read that Matta gets an automatic 1 year extension every time he wins the B1G. He has won 5 times already, which is why it is already through 2019. Just an interesting tidbit I thought.
Gene Smith emphasized that OSU basketball APR has improved from 911 to 972 under Matta's leadership. The program has seen improvement on and off the court.
He's done a great job. He's starting to find players that have solid projectable talents (Scott, Thompson, Williams) and mix them around upper tier talent like Thomas. Just missing a consistent outside shooter that can play D this year. Luckily Thad has two hard wired scorers in the next class (Loving, Williams). Glad to see he's gonna be around for a while. One Big C/PF in this next class, and we have most of our glaring needs filled. Go Bucks
I'm very happy about this. Matta has brought consistency and stability to this program which it has not seen as far back as I can remember. My first OSU basketball game was during Gary Williams's brief tenure back in the 80's, and since then I've seen some good, some great, some bad, and some downright ugly basketball. And while there were periods of success, nothing I have seen matches what Matta has brought to OSU in terms of national relevance and success.
I'll take Brad Stevens over Thad any day, better X's and O's coach and give Stevens the recruiting and atheltic budget Thad has and I am pretty damn sure he will be able to recruit on par with Thad if not better.
