NBA Draft

I know there are quite a few NBA fans on here and I was wondering what you folks thought of the 2012 Draft. As a Cavs fan I was quite happy with their pick of Waiters and the trade they made to pick up Zeller. I also thought that Sullinger pretty much landed in the perfect situation, and that OKC essentially threw away their pick in the draft by taking Jones.

Im not so sold on Zellers yet, I still think he may just be a Tyler Hansbrough.  I'll give the guy a chance and hope he becomes a good player for the Cavs though.

Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens

I watched both extensively. To me it always seemed like Hansbrough was more robotic than Zeller, Zeller seems a lot more fluid. Also Zeller is about 3-4 inches taller than Hansbrough. They both run the floor extremely well. I'm excited to see what Waiters can do, the guy seems like an excellent compliment to Irving in the backcourt.

I liked the Cavs draft, Waiters is a good choice and he will take some pressure off of Kyrie with his ball handling and pick-n-roll play plus the cavs needed someone who can score not just shoot. Plus everything you hear Waiters is a gym rat and that is always a good thing.

I am still on the fence about Tyler Zeller it seems allot to give up for him but they did get Kelenna Azubuike (whos played 12 games total over the last 2 seasons) when he is healthy he is a solid player but he hasn't been healthy for a while. The Cavs really need a Center and I hope Zeller can do the job.

It's good to be home.

I like Waiters but not at 4. I like Zeller but not at the expense of 3 picks when we've got plenty of holes, no depth, and there's still some solid talent on the board. Hansbrough and Zeller are similar in that they both played at UNC and that's about it. Zeller is a true center at 7 feet +. I'd also say he's probably a better athlete than Hansbrough. Psycho T just had a relentless motor and was a total bull in a china shop. I'm hoping for things to work out but I just don't agree with the strategy. Hopefully Waiters turns into James Harden 2.0 (doubtful, but hopefully) and Zeller is just a reliable starter at C someday.

According to John Hollinger's Draft Rater, which has been super accurate, Dion Waiters was the best perimeter player in the draft, and is the best SG prospect since Dwayne Wade. I agree with your assessment of Hansbrough.

Like I said, I really do hope so.

Totally disagree William. While the Waiters pick may pan out i think the Zeller trade was a bad decision. You wait and see, players like Jones 3rd are what the NBA is about...DIFFERENCE MAKERS..The Cavs make a habbit out of taking role players instead of gamechangers i.e. Tristan Thompson, Dejaun Wagner etc. In a city such as Cleveland your not gonna get any big name free agents, gotta get your stars in the draft LIKE OKC in fact their poor drafting pre and post(2003) Lebron is why he was never surrounded with any other stars.

the Cavs didnt want to go into camp with 4 rookies and 2 second year players. by trading up for Zeller they fill a need so hopefully Andy can play PF, where he has been more productive over the years. Irving and Waiters are a great young back court with some decent size. If Gee starts at SF im ok with it. Thompson off the bench is a great defensive presence. And Boobie is still a servicable gaurd off the bench...Kind of disappointed with them with free agency...

The Cavs have sucked it up in Free Agency, last year's draft and this year's were very good in my mind. Zeller was the 2nd best big man in the draft, Drummond is way overrated. The Cavs wanted to take 2 players, with 3 at the most, and look at the guys Dallas got, a bunch of nobodies. Zeller is a proven commodity, he runs the floor well, and shoots well. His defense is serviceable too. An eventual starting 5 of Irving, Waiters, Gee (although hopefully the Cavs draft a SF next year as Gee is more of 6th man), Thompson, and Zeller will be damn good.

I hope your right. Just don't see the point in trading up for serviceable when you coulda stood pat and let a top 5 guy drop right in your lap. And who cares who Dallas got with those picks, there were some gems available and this is was widely considered a really strong draft. Thats when 2nd round picks gain value, keep em dammit.

I don't see the hype with Perry Jones, he didn't even produce in college, what suggests that he'll do so in the NBA?

Shot 50% and avg slightly more than Witers on a team that could of used a couple more balls to pass around and shoot. Had 3-4 players drafted

All I know is Draymond Green was available with those second round picks and we all have seen what Draymond Green can do when he plays all out. He may not be prototypical, but like Sullinger, the guy balls.

I like Sullinger to Boston. I don't like Boston but I believe that is a great place to harbor his skills and let him shine without pressure.

Being a Raptors fan, don't ask, I like Ross but hate that they didn't trade down with Drummond right there. They could have gotten 12 and 18 and taken Ross at 12, Royce White at 18. Really though it was about last years pick Jonas ValacuinasIdon'tknowifthatiscorrect! If they can get Nash, this team has some talent. As the other team that was dessimated by the big three, I think Cleveland and Toronto are holding onto some good players.

I am a little disappointed with the Cavs draft.  I think it was a reach for Waiters at 4, although I would have been ok with it had they traded back to say #7 and picked him up and other picks, assuming he was still on the board and we had a willing team to trade. The other thing was, the Cavs never brought in Waiters for a workout and if they were serious about this kid you would think they would have at least had him in for a visit.(Although they didn't work out Tristian Thompson last year either)

Zeller is a serviceable center, I don't think he will dominate a game, but the Cavs lacked a true big, and Zeller fits that build.  Plus Andy can now come off the bench where I believe he will be more effective in less minutes and maybe he can stay healthy.

I would give them a B-, I still think Waiters was a reach, but he does have potential. Zeller will be good, I hope for the best for this team.  Hopefully with Irving at point he can get more production out of these two and this draft will appear much better years down the road.  Remember OKC got panned for taking Russel Westbrook.

IMO-I like Zeller and think that he will contribute asap. I thought that T. Robinson would have been the best pick at 4. He is the most polished player in that draft and will probably give you double/double first year. I don't know much about Waiters but I hear from people saying that he is a legit scoring threat. I've heard that he may have a bit of an attitiude problem but I guess we will see. I'm not dissapointed until I see how these guys pan out. Give them a chance and lets talk next year at this time to see how they did.

The one thing I keep hearing about Waiters is that he's impossible to cover off the dribble. Combine that with Irving's speed with and without the ball, and it's gonna take a special defense to stop the scoring.

Zeller kind of ties in to me. An athletic big man, with so-so strength, length, blocking, and rebounding abilities, but one who is a versatile scorer, and runs the floor like no one else of his size out there. With the three of those guys on the floor, every stop means fast break scoring.

Waiters.... doesn't start for his NCAA basketball team, but good enough to start for the Cavs

Haha, just a joke.  I like the Waiters pick.  Sounds like someone who can create on his own.  But in terms of not picking Robinson, it would have been kind of tough to take another PF this year, with Thompson already there.

@Dbit, you have no idea how many of my friends said that and were dead serious. I liked the cavs draft overall, watched Waiters play multiple times dude can score with ease and I think could be a stud. Zeller adds the size the cavs need plus everything BuckI-8 said. I know some fans would have rather keep the picks instead of trading for Zeller, but the NBA draft isn't the NFL draft, late round picks aren't very valuable because more often then not they don't pan out.

I hope that Waiters turns out to be the smart choice but I just thought that TROB was polished and ready to give 10 and 10 a night from day one. Waiters showed me signs of greatness especially in the open court but I worry about is maturity and how well he can shoot the ball. Zellar was a good/safe choice and probably the second most polished and NBA ready type guy in the draft. He runs the court aswell as any 7 footer I've seen in some time. He may not light it up on the offensive side but I think eventully he will learn to be a scoring low post guy. His rebounding, shot blocking and defense is pretty solid so I could see him getting minutes. I jusr feel like TROB was a really good player and we may regret not taking him at 4. He is a really good rebounding forward that has polished low post moves. I actually see him as a Blake Griffin type player but I think TROB is a more well rounded player than Griffin. Give TROB a few years and an outside shot and he has superstar written all over him.
