Matta zings Michigan

“Their new football coach calls us Ohio (as opposed to Ohio State),” Matta said. “The basketball coach calls us Ohio. ... A reporter asked me one time, ‘Thad, how do you feel about them calling you Ohio?.’ I said, ‘My man, I’m 16-3 against Michigan in eight years. They can call us whatever they want to.’ ”

It's actually 17-3 if you count their loss in the NCAA tournament this year.  Here's how fans in Nationwide reacted to the end of the game:

Now that Beilein's system is fully in, his players are in the program, and the way recruiting is going; I can guarantee that his record won't be near that in the next 5 years.

Rational is right, it'll be 26-3 after 5 more years.  Good call, Rational.

Yeah, Rational I don't think Beilein will ever recruit on Matta's level over a 4 year span.

Its kind of sad when combined since Matta's arrival at OSU, Tressel had more wins over Michigan (7) than Michigan BBall and Football had against OSU (4)...see you in November

Just wait and see, you will remember I said this. Yes he has been there since 07, His players occupy the program from top to bottom now.

As of now our classes are better in 12' and 13'. I understand you have limited availability in the 12' class. We will have 3 guys in that class who are going to be instant impacts with Mcgary, Glenn Robinson Jr., and Stauskas. Add that to Burke, Hardaway, and Morgan who will be a year stronger and better and I like what we got going.

Also, Horford, Vogrich and Biefeldt ( Redshirted this year will contribute next year) will be better. I still expect a lot from Horford.

I apologize Grammar Nazi, do not shoot me please.

I actually was not, but did get accepted. I played division two football, so I opted to go to a smaller school to play the game and get through school for free.

Way to contribute to the thread though!

EDIT: I always hated posts like that, where someone calls out someone else's grammar. First off, it contributes nothing to the thread or topic at hand. Second of all, if you understand what the guy is saying, who cares. Education level varies all over the country and last.....really there is a million grammar rules. So, if you want to get into specifics about grammar I can write a book about it and I rather not. Just finished a grammar course and let me tell you, there are rules after rules. Too many to keep up with.

Anways, sorry about my rant. This kind of stuff annoyed me on Mgoblog, where people would degrade other people because of their grammar. My buddy cannot write a sentence correctly. But he does better than about 80 percent of us on this board. Just saying.

Matta's comeback was perfect, but I also find it unlikely that that level of winning against them will continue.  It's just too hard to beat a rival that many times for that long.  They are clearly back at a pretty high level and it will always be hard to win on the road in conference, so I find it likely that we split with them the majority of the time over the next 10 years.

Also, I know this is a Buckeye board, but talking smack about the future is pretty meaningless. No one can predict what will happen 3 years from now and making "bold" predictions like "we'll beat you 15 out of the next 20 times we play" are pretty useless.  If it does happen, then all you have to do is look them in the eye and point to the scoreboard because I prefer to let the outcome do my talking.

Relax, MFan, just poking a little fun.  If you feel my comment about your apostrophe placement was intended to "degrade" you may need to buck-up a little.

Anyway, I disagree with your assessment - if it takes more than 4 years to get your guys in place, I'd say your BB coach isn't doing his job.

We have made the tourney the last two years. I think he is doing his job. I now expect them to be near the top, as far as elite teams go. Not saying, they are going to be elite. But, I definitely feel that they should be able to compete and win their fair share of games against elite teams. The recruiting taking place warrants that, and all the basketball people will tell you he is a great X and O guy, you add those two together and I think Michigan can win a lot of games versus the perennial powers. Also, make deeper tourney runs, which matters to me more in Basketball compared to a Big Ten title.

No Rational, just a typical response for most fans of any team. This is a tough question for any fan, but would you rather win the B1G and get bumped in the Sweet Sixteen, or finish 4th in the league and lose in the Final 4 ??

Set your avi
Rational MFAN on 4 May 2012 - 1:34pm #

lose in the final four, not even close if you ask me.

I think that is one of the negatives of a playoff or bracket system. It diminishes the importance of the regular season. Although, it is still important that you win enough games to make the tourney, along with quality wins.

I don't get Michigan and IU basketball fans...it takes time to build a program blah blah blah.  Crean and Beilein have been there for awhile, meanwhile Matta goes to the FF in his 2nd available year to do so and Calipari takes UK from nothing to tourney runs and now a NC.  This notion that it takes 4 to 5 years to build a CBB program is absurd given the amount of kids that leave early.

BuckNutInAnnArbor's picture
BuckNutInAnnArbor on 6 May 2012 - 10:17pm #

Redstorm, you're absolutely spot on.  The smaller roster size for a sport like basketball (in comparison to sports like football, swimming, track, etc) allows for coaches to quickly turn around the program with the recuits they want.  It can be seen as an unrealistic expectation, but look how fast programs can rise up (Kentucky post BCG), fall (UCLA post 3 consecutive F4's), or both (Florida post back-to-back Titles).

"...but then again 'Michigan' and 'huge mistake' are synonymous so that shouldn't have been much of a surprise to anybody."  - Mark Titus

Do you realllyyyyyyyyy want to mention Matta with Calipari in regards to how fast they succeeded? If you do, then shoot, my mind is about to run off and start wondering how fast Matta got there and landed two of the top players in Indiana. When in reality all top players in Indiana dream of playing at IU.

I get what you are saying, but you set yourself up for that one.

Set your avi
RedStorm45 on 7 May 2012 - 10:52am #

@Rational continuing to be irrational...if you look at Matta's track record, he has succeeded EVEYERWHERE he's been.  Every year he's coached he's had at least 20 wins.  That includes stops at Butler and Xavier.  So once he gets to Ohio State as a young(er) coach, he can finally start getting highly touted recruits.  Why would he stop succeeding when he "moves up?"

I'll give you Calipari since he has a track record of leaving programs in a mess of violations.  Name one violation for Matta since that's what you're implying.  Oh man, he picked up some Indiana kids...did you stop and think for a second why Indiana kids weren't going to IU? Oh yeah, that's because their program was turned upside down and winning 2 conference games a year.  Give me a break.

Set your avi
Rational MFAN on 7 May 2012 - 12:05pm #

I never thought Matta was paying off recruits, I was just making the point that comparing your coach to Calipari is not the best argument.

Set your avi
RedStorm45 on 7 May 2012 - 12:17pm #

I wasn't comparing them, just giving two examples of coaches who took over programs on the downslide and turned it around quickly.  They didn't need 5 years to rebuild the program.  Obviously in one case we're all pretty sure why the top recruits went there, but we can't really do much about it.  Shaka Smart took VCU to the FF in his 2nd season.

Set your avi
Rational MFAN on 7 May 2012 - 1:09pm #

Minus Smart, those guys had great resources. Michigan just got their own basketball building, which seems amazing to me. The basketball program was down big time at Michigan. I do not know if some of you realize how far down the basketball program was. They were practicing in Crisler, which was a dump before the renovations. It is no coincidence that the recruiting is picking up now that the Player Development Center is done and a big attraction amongst recruits. It was amazing what Beilien did in the first four years considering what he had to sell.

I do not know what Crean's excuse is though, he has had top classes in recruiting.

So painful to have had to share the B1G title with Michigan last year. Especially because I dont think MSU loses to Ohio State if Dawson doesn't tear his ACL. Gah!

Rational, you said "I do not know what Crean's excuse is though, he has had top classes in recruiting"  -- They only had like 3 scholarship players when he took over, and lost like 98% of their offense (or something like that). Then their best recruit, Maurice Cheeks, had season ending injureis for two straight years. This year, they finally had enough talent to not play Tom Pritchard for 20min a game.

I do think Michigan will be better this year, but I think every B1G contender has huge questions to answer before the season start.
