"high level athlete who barely played for Buckeyes"....does anyone else see that as some sort of dig at Thad/OSU or am I just feeling particularly defensive?
Total dig, but he could just play it off as if he meant that tOSU is so ooo good that high level players are guarenteed minutes. Same could be said about any top tier program, though.
It wasn't long ago he was saying this... http://twitter.com/#!/SpoonDaKid15/status/186483408799678464
He's got some weird tweets again (just like in the following days of the FF loss). As much as Thomas wants to play the 3...I think Spoon saw the writing on the wall that D.T. was likely going to play the 4 and play 35+ minutes a night. All we've seen J.D. do is dunk and I don't think he can play any other position in college but the 4 position unless he develops on outside game. Even then, guys like Thompson and Ross are waiting for the 3 spot.
If true, combined with Sibert's (probable?) transfer...we're down to 9 scholarship players (and Alex Rogers, the walk-on) and Tre McDonald is one of those 9 - no offense to McDonald but he's not ready for minutes. Tony Parker would be HUGE.
Also...high level? No offense to Spoon, but he was a 3-star recruit coming out of H.S. Combine that with his ineligibility last year (and by that I mean he missed potential playing time in games), why is Goodman implying he's surprised J.D. didn't play that often? He had his chances this year as the 1st big off the bench in several games. What does he do outside of dunking? Rivals had him as the 28th PF in his class, so I don't get where this "high level" notion is coming from.
I wouldn't take it as a dig because it's not like say Sibert, who was ranked as the 7th overall SG in that class. Wait, Sibert may/may not be transferring...haha
Goodman doesn't know everything behind the scenes and what went into his PT (or lack of). We all know what Spoon can do and with the guys coming back, his minutes weren't likely to increase all that much. Wish him the best if this story is indeed true.
Is there really any doubt that he is a high level athlete? I dont think he is implying that he deserved more playing time, probably just making people understand why this is worth noting in national news. Spoon is a ridiculous athlete, he just isnt a very good basketball player on OSU.
I guess it depends on high level. High level could mean highly-touted/highly-recruited out of H.S. or high level could mean he can do things very few other people can do. No one would question his athletic ability, especially as it relates to dunking. I wouldn't call him a high level basketball player because he hasn't shown us that he can do a whole lot else on a consistent basis. News to Goodman (or whoever else) - an insane leaping ability doesn't mean one will earn minutes (if that's what he meant by high level athlete).
It's a dig. Mattas entire storyline has been his lack of playing a bench. If nothing else it's fuel to the fire, gotta write about something in regards to a FF team I guess.
Lol, it's the monkey that won't be extricated off his back until he wins a 'ship. He gets the one and dones, but hasn't won yet. Cal finally did it, but the Kentucky lure is a little different than tOSU's. The college game has become more about the coaches than it is about the players, not sure I like it but it is what it is.
never like matta when he was at xavier,we will never know how a player will play in a game if they only get mop-up min. How many 5 star recruits want to come to OHIO to sit on the bench?
witherspoon will transfer to dayton or ohio bobcats my gut feeling
I mean he said "high level athlete", which he is. I dont think everything is a knock on OSU. Goodman had Aaron Craft as his profile pic during the tournament. He is just giving people a reason to care and follow the transfer of Spoon.
I am not surprised that JD is transferring. He probably would not be playing much this coming season anyway. I always felt like he was an afterthought in the recruiting class with Sullinger, although @ Northland JD had games where he outchined Sullinger.
He started off on the wrong foot his freshaman year @ OSU with academic problems and hasn't really been much of a factor since. I don't think he couldve played in front of any of the guys in Matta's starters from this year. And obviously Matta didn't trust him enough to put him over a guy like Sam Thompson off the bench.
I wish him well wherever he goes, but this isn't surprising.
BTW I don't think it was a deliberate dig @ him or OSU. Goodman is pretty blunt, and him saying 'high-energy athlete who barely played' is an accurate description IMO.
The playing the bench stuff is overrated. Kentucky played 7 guys all season. I would argue that our bench guys could play more if any of them could hit the 3. I really hope we land the Italian 3 point specialist from NV because we've got no punch off the bench, just more defense which we already have in spades.
Sorry Spoon is leaving. I always felt if he could get a good chance he could shine. If he could have developed a really good outside shot, he could be like Vince Carter. I wish him well.
I don't think this means that Thad has to chase down top end talent. The starting 5 is guaranteed to be top end talent with at least 2-3 more off the bench. I think Thad should find some specialists who understand they may not get a chance to start but will get a chance to play for a top program. I love having one of the most talented teams in the nation but I miss the days were the 7-8 guy is meant to come off the bench for a special need. 3 pt specialist, lockdown defender, big lumox who works harder than his talent. An example of what I am talking about is Ross Smith down at Louisville. The guy doesn't fit the system and really doesn't expect to start but when he comes in, he makes things happen.
I do think Smith is that guy. He is a great starter but if thompson could move ahead as the starting 2, I think Smith could be an assassin off the bench. Sibert was supposed to be that guy and went cold. I believe Smith could be an excellent 6th man.
Okay dude, whatever you say. You're only 14 hours late to the post. It's funny how you say he wasn't telling me what to do, and then you tell me to "chill". Hypocrites will be hypocrites I guess.
I can tell from your post history that you've contributed so much to this forum. Like I said: don't tell me what to do. Saw this on Reddit: http://www.quickmeme.com/meme/36a4tp/
Geesh...recruit please address me if you have a problem, I didn't mean any offense lol, it's a message board and tones and body language aren't present. I assure you though I'm capable, more than capable of intelligent response, I'm not Helen Keller, this much I will tell you. No harm, no foul.
Don't think there's been an official press release on Sibert to UD, though that was reported everywhere last week.
Buford - graduated, Sully - gone, Spoon and Sibert - transfer. Odds dwindling on Tony Parker. We'll be down to 9 scholarship players and a walk-on. One of those 9 schollies is Trey McDonald, who does not look college-ready (at least last year). One injury screws us. Tank's decision to come back looks HUGE for us now.
Where and why would be of benefit here.
What? That's all the information available. Don't tell me what to post. If I had it, I'd share it. It was a Goodman tweet.
I'm not telling you anything, asking is all.
Ahh, the all encompassing minimal info tweet, hate those. No need to get all defensive.

I dont really see it as a dig. it is exactly the situation. He is a high level athlete. He didnt say "A really good basketball player."

Spoon has proven he can dunk, DT will get his minutes at the 4, he probably made the right decision for himself.
I guess it depends on high level. High level could mean highly-touted/highly-recruited out of H.S. or high level could mean he can do things very few other people can do. The '07 team went 8-9 deep consistently....and...yeah...

Agreed, AWOP. This just happens to be one of the rareties in which it is a basic storyline trying to get people to read it.

Wish all the best for Spoon. Good kid. If you look around there are alot of transfers from many schools going on now.
With Sibert transferring also, The Buckeyes now have 9 scholarship players.

Can we try to keep the discussion on Spoon and the effects this may have on the basketball buckeyes rather than on internet decorum?
Oh I wasn't talking about you vested, I know you meant no harm. It was the guy a day late that told me to chill >.<
Anyway, Spoony would never start here, so good for him, ever though he is a student favorite #Squad

makes it official, no word on new school.

Interesting comments from Spoon in this article:
http://www.buckeyextra.com/content/blogs/hoops-and-scoops/2012/04/04-16-...
"He (Mata) said he didn't think I really cared about winning, that I just wanted to be on the team to be on the team..."
Seems like there has to be more to this story than just leaving for some more playing time.
I feel like I would of had a little more heated response than Spoon did if the coach told me he thought I didn't care about winning....
If you ain't a Silver Bullet, you're a target
I wonder if Matta is referring to the fact that Spoon was always doing dunk contests in pregame...(at least from what I saw)
