Burke Rumor

Trey Burke has attained an agent and has withdrew from classes at TSUN. Anyone with any knowledge? Rumored around.

looks like the pride of Columbus will be drafted in the 2nd round and fade into obscurity

Thought it was true, fairly solid "rumor". That means TSUN BB is basicly starting over, for the most part. Without a very good point guard from Ohio. Hardaway should have fun. Good luck Trey.

Michigan will still be pretty decent next year.  They need a point in that offense, but they still have Hardaway and Morgan, and bring in Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson Jr. as highly-rated recruits.

Oldcolumbus, you're right.  Looking like Spike Albrecht or Amedeo Della Valle are the likely choices to fill the Burke void if they commit.  However, with Burke we'd be a preseason contender and without we might be in the top 25 all year.  My selfishness aside, I think he's doing an injustice to himself by leaving now.  I blame Sullinger for being in his ear (sarcasm).

Just curious: Anyone know how many point guards have been successful in the NBA that are less than 6 feet tall? I know Burke is good and all, but I wonder if his height or lack thereof will hurt him at the pro level.

Jameer Nelson is 6'0 and he's done decently well, but that's all I can think of right now in terms of active NBA PGs.

Iverson was 6'0; but he's the exception, not the rule.

Guys of note in the league now who are 6'0 and under after a quick search:

  • DJ Augustin
  • John Lucas III
  • Ty Lawson
  • Nate Robinson
  • Kyle Lowry
  • Darren Collison
  • Chris Paul
  • JJ Barea
  • Jameer Nelson
  • Sebastian Telfair
  • Jonny Flynn
  • Will Bynum
  • Isaiah Thomas

Other than Paul, none have really set the world on fire.  Each is mostly a niche player, or was a 1st round draft bust.  On the other hand, most of these guys have been in the league for a few years and have at least carved a spot out for themselves in the NBA.

I look at Burke as a player who could be a Jameer Nelson or something similar.  Doesn't have elite athleticism for his size, but is a good athlete with very advanced skills and a pretty good shooter.

If I'm Burke and I'm being told by a team late in the 1st round that they would take me, it would be hard to pass up.  The more film NBA teams get on him, the more they will pick him apart, mostly for his size and lack of elite athletic ability.  Strike while the iron is hot if you can.  I think Trey can have a successful NBA career.

OldColumbus-

I was going to do a similar search for 6 foot and under players in the league, so thanks for doing that research.

I really do wish Burke the best of luck. He's a Columbus guy, seems like a good kid, and although I think he could benefit from another year at Michigan, with the small number of guard prospects in this year's draft, he might as well go now.

Let's not forget, the NBA drafts more on potential than the NFL does. Perfect example is the fact that guys like Daequan Cook, BJ Mullens, and Kosta Koufos got taken in the 1st round after sub-par years in Columbus (although for BJ and Kosta, if you're 7 foot and have a pulse, you will probably be drafted). And even though they were all taken in the 1st round, Cook, Mullens, and Koufos have each spent time in the NBDL.

I don't think Trey is ready for the NBA but on the other hand I would be glad to see him go because we won't have to worry about him.
