Doea anyone besides me think Buford isn't as bad as everyone says? He is one of our best players, by far, in my opinion. I would say his biggest flaw is a lack f leadership, but he is a solid basketball player
Hopefully Buford picked up his clutch gene today, I'll admit I've been one to bash on Buford, but he came to play in that second half and that was a big shot.
To this point Buford has not played well in big games. This team can go far in the tournament, but we need him to play well in the big games. Hopefully this game will give the team the confidence it needs.
Clearly he does not suck, and anyone who said that in anything but frusteration is wrong. In fact I think if he did, we would not get so mad. What is frustrating, is seeing such a good player struggle so badly at times. Hopefully he can use this game going forward and hopefully this can help the team come together.
WB certainly does not suck. He is awesome when he is on, and when he's on his confidence is up and all is well. But when he is off, he is OFF, to the point of being miserably bad. I love the kid and I think he's a really good player, has a great shot, and have (mostly) enjoyed watching him play over the years. But its the inconsistency that has been difficult to understand. He goes one game shooting lights out to the next not being able to hit anything. And it has not helped that he hasn't shown up in the big games when OSU needed him most. Hopefully he's got the confidence he needs to bring his mojo to the big ten tourney and the ncaa's to go off on a high note.
Sparty's cover for 44 was Dawson who did a legit job covering him in the first half before he went down with the knee injury. Not taking anything away from Willy B, but Sparty didn't have a counter once Dawson went out.
BTW, Dawson is out for the remainder with a torn ACL, that really sucks for he and Sparty.
This is why people have been frustrated with Buford. It's not like this came out of nowhere today - we know he is good enough of a player to make big shots and be a leader on this team. It's like being frustrated with this team being 25-6 - because we know they're better than that. If this team was only good enough to be a 10th-15th ranked team, we'd be very happy with the way this season has gone, even with the tough losses. If Buford didn't have NBA talent - we might not have been as disappointed with his play because it would compare more favorably to what the expectations would be for him.
However, it cant erase the dribbles off the leg and other weekend disappearances all year long. Had those not occurred, perhaps this would be an outright title. Or perhaps not.
Did anyone else notice that WB was talking out there today? I realize it's one game and I'm most likely blowing it up, but I really hope he's decided to take control of a team that should be his.
People are confusing inconsistent and suck. I don’t think any rational fan would say WB sucks, he has just been very inconsistent. For most the season it has been Jekyll and Hyde for WB and that is what has been frustrating for us fans, we know he has talent but he just does not bring it every night.
this is such an easy topic to start after his ONE big game of late against tough competition. i love WB, but seriously, he has been more like Waldo Buford lately. i dont like when people attack him as a person, or man, but the stuff he was getting hated on for was justified.
vs #15 Indiana: 3-7 FG 8 points
vs #20 Wisconsin: 4-15 FG 11 points
vs #12 Michigan St: 2-12 FG 4 points
vs #19 Michigan: 3-12 FG 6 points
vs Northwestern: 3-10 6 points (would have cost us the B10 if we lost)
He can play well in big games, as evidenced yesterday and he did play well against Duke, Florida, and Kansas. He isn't that bad, he just needs to adjust when his shot isn't falling and take it to the hole.
So everyone that says "told you, this is for all you buford haters" look at the stats above, thats why people were hating. He didnt show up in the big games in conference.
I think we all can agree Buford is a good player, he just has been inconsistent at times, and it has been in some tough games. Hopefully this will be the confidence builder he needs to have a good showing in March.
William Buford is my favorite Buckeye hoopster of all time. He's a jump shooter, and he's the only one we have on the team, so when he's cold its more glaringly obvious this year. Where as last year we had Diebler and Lighty both of whom could get hot from outside, so it wasn't as obvious when Will had a bad shooting game. Go Buckeyes!
After yesterdays game I was so happy for the dude. I always wonder if all the criticism hurts his play...meaning that if he's aware that everyone is looking for him to mess up and then talking about it non stop - if it causes him an added burden of feeling like he really can't blow it anymore which causes him to choke. On the other hand - he's a player at a prestigious school in big time college sports & should be tough enough to bear (bare?) someone criticising him...
Anyway - I was so hyped to see him hit that shot yesterday. Yeah - it's been an inconsistent year for him to say the least, but the dude deserves being the hero. When he's on - there aren't too may better. He & Ravenel pretty much won that game. Hope he rides that into the tourney. It's been said & it's true - As Willie goes - so goes the Buckeyes...
The world is full of kings & queens who'll blind your eyes & steal your dreams - it's heaven & hell - Ronnie James Dio.
I agree with Highwire's comment about WB talking more than usual on the court during the MSU game. I really liked what I saw from him. He was directing the guys during timeouts and was assuming the leadership role this team will need down the stretch. Clearly, WB is not the most gregarious guy out there. He's always has come across shy and not a big self-promoter. This is one of the reasons I've been one of Buford's biggest supporters. However, for us to be successful over the next month .... WB is going to need to step it up on and off the court. I think he can do it.
@the419 yes it would've been easy to start this topic after the win, except I started it at halftime when everyone was jumping on Buford for costing us the game for missing 3 free throws and having 6 points. I was simply trying to point out that while he may perform inconsistently on occasion, it's not like the other 4 starters come to play every game. Just saying that Buford takes way more heat than he deserves
@TRIV - my apologies. i thought you started it afterwards. regardless, i completely agree with you about the other 4. they are just as up and down as WB. he just gets more criticism because hes a senior i think. deshaun thomas is much much more inconsistent and completely breaks down on defense and doesnt even average 1 assist per game.
i love buford. i think he is going to be a good NBA player. i blame coaching more than buford for some of this. we end up playing "my turn" sometimes because of bad shots taken by thomas multiple possessions in a row.
he does take more heat than he deserves, but he does deserve some heat based on the fact that he is a senior and his big games normally come against bottom feeder B10 teams. but he has earned that heat because he is a great player.
we don't talk about lenzelle smith not playing well against certain teams because he is nowhere near the player buford is. in some regard, his taking heat is a compliment to what we all know he is capable of
The Buford homers don't seem to understand this - we support WB because he's a Buckeye, he's from Ohio and has been at OSU for 4 years (and is about to graduate). We want him to play well and perform at a high level. We know he's capable of it. We've seen him put up 28. We've seen him shoot lights out. We've also seen him go 2-16 and essentially cost us a game. He's had the talent since high school. He's always been a nice 2nd or 3rd perimeter weapon (usually behind Turner or Diebler), but he struggled a bit this season for whatever reason. We don't "hate him," we're just frustrated with the inconsistency and some of the crazy shots he takes when he forces the issue. We know the talent is there, we've seen it...so we get frustrated when he goes 3-14. I think any fan base would have the same reaction, especially when he plays 38+ minutes and usually takes 12-15 shots a game.
He came to play today though. First half thought he was up to his old tricks but the second half really turned it on and kept us in the game.
Point proven right there
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
I love Bufy the Sparty Slayer.
I dont always root for college athletics, but when i do (which is most of the time) I choose THE Ohio State Buckeyes.
Hopefully Buford picked up his clutch gene today, I'll admit I've been one to bash on Buford, but he came to play in that second half and that was a big shot.
Favorite Buckeye: Obviously BJ Mullens
There's no doubt Buford is a great basketball player, we just need Buford to play great consistently.
To this point Buford has not played well in big games. This team can go far in the tournament, but we need him to play well in the big games. Hopefully this game will give the team the confidence it needs.
Buuuuford. Love that he hit that game-winner...so happy for him.
I don't understand why Scott is in there. Give Siebert or someone a chance. Scott has no offense.
"You win with people." - Woody Hayes
HUGE! Huge for Buford's confidence, huge for our perception, and huge for our NCAA tourney seed!

I've been hard on WB, but i've never jumped off the wagon saying he sucks. When he's on, Ohio State is NC contenders easily.
"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

This is huge for him and the buckeyes and I love that he got to be the hero. GO WB!! GO Bucks!!
I know there's a game saturday, and my ass will be there.

I know Buford has had a inconsistant career but he has won us a lot more games then he lost.
It's good to be home.

Discounting the Kansas game..I think an argument can be made he plays better with Sully on the bench.
Thomas and WB appear more fluid and comfortable when the offensive is not predicated on hammering Sully inside.
